Men's Basketball: Lobos set Wooden Legacy records after scoring 100 points for first time since 2013

After Thursday’s loss, the Lobos regrouped to find success Friday afternoon, breaking a few records in the Wooden Legacy Tournament.

New Mexico (4-1) took down the Cal State Northridge Matadors (2-4), 105-89 on Friday. The 105 points by the Lobos set a single-game points record in the tournament, eclipsing the previous record of 99.

It was the first time the team scored 100 points in three years, a feat the Lobos achieved by shooting nearly 65 percent from the field, also a new tournament record.

The team’s lead scorers, Tim Williams and Elijah Brown, each finished with 21 points.

Williams finished with 7-of-12 shooting and was perfect on free throws, making all seven of his attempts. He has been in double figures in every game this season.

Brown, who was on the floor for 28 minutes, was 7-of-11 overall and 3-of-5 on 3-pointers. It was Brown’s third straight game in double-figures.

Two other Lobos finished in double figures — Sam Logwood with 13 points and a career-high 16 points for Obij Aget.

The Matadors were coming off a 73-95 loss to Texas A&M after shooting a season low of 37.5 percent. They improved the shooting percentage to 51.8, allowing them to stay close for most of the game against the Lobos.

CSUN had five players in double figures. Darin Johnson led the team with 22 points on 8-for-11 shooting and Aaron Parks followed with 20 points.

Similar to Thursday's game, the scoring began with a dunk by Aget. He scored the first four points for New Mexico as it raced out to a 20-10 lead. But the Matadors came back to tie the game 22-22 with 11:59 remaining in the first half.

The Lobos slowly pulled ahead to lead 54-45 at halftime. The 54 first half points also set a new Wooden Legacy record.

New Mexico led for the entire second half, but the Matadors threatened near the middle of the period. They cut the lead to two points on three occasions, the latest coming at 77-75 with 7:50 remaining.

But UNM scored the next eight points to extend the lead to double digits and never looked back.

New Mexico will take a break on Saturday and then come back to play their final game of the Wooden Legacy on Sunday, as they battle the University of Dayton Flyers for fifth place in the tournament.

Like New Mexico, Dayton (3-2) lost in the first round, falling by two points to the Nebraska Cornhuskers, 80-78.

They went on to win 84-74 over the Portland Pilots (3-2) on Friday night. Charles Cooke led the team with 20 points, followed by Scoochie Smith with 17.

Dayton and New Mexico are scheduled to play on Sunday at noon.
