According to a UNM HSC press release, Martha Cole McGrew, and Jamie Silva-Steele, have been named 2017 Women of Influence by Albuquerque Business First.
McGrew, executive vice dean and professor at the Department of Family and Community Medicine, graduated from Louisiana State University School of Medicine and completed her residency in Family Medicine at LSU Medical Center, according to the release.
McGrew earned a fellowship in Family Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, and went on to join the medical school as a faculty member in 1990, according to the release. An expertise in family and community medicine, medical education and maternal child health, combined with a focus on serving rural and underserved areas in New Mexico, make McGrew a champion for health sciences education for the next generation of health care providers.
According to the release, Silva-Steele, president and CEO of the UNM Sandoval Regional Medical Center and an Albuquerque native, has been with UNMH for more than 30 years, beginning as a pediatric nurse and administrator for ambulatory care services.
Silva-Steele has been instrumental in improving patient care at UNMH, including advancing the primary care patient-centered medical home, developing new primary care and specialty facilities for patients, expanding interpreter language services and developing UNMH’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Program, according to the release.
According to the release, in the past few years, she has also been a strong advocate for the community, working closely with Sandoval County, area Native American communities and Rio Rancho to enhance services at SRMC.
“Martha Cole McGrew and Jamie Silva-Steele have long been recognized at the UNM Health Sciences Center for their dedication and innovation in addressing health care opportunities and challenges in our communities throughout New Mexico,” Health Sciences Chancellor and Medicine School Dean Paul Roth is quoted as saying in the release.
