UNM’s Welcome Back Events underway before school starts

On Sunday, students at the University of New Mexico will have the opportunity to get used to campus life again at the University’s Welcome Back Events. Before school starts on Monday, students can partake in Discover UNM, First-Year Family Day (exclusive to first-year students), Class Crawl and Movie on the Field.

The Discover UNM event will kick off the day from 1-3 p.m., in which various departments and organizations will be located in the Student Union Building ballroom to talk about opportunities and resources on campus.

“One of the greatest benefits to being a Lobo is the access to resources and organizations that support their intellectual, social and personal interests and well-being,” University secretary Nancy Middlebrook wrote to the Daily Lobo.

First-Year Family Day, exclusively for first-year students, is the next event in the lineup. First-Year Convocation will take place in the Johnson Center at 4 p.m., along with a reception afterwards from 5-7 p.m. in the SUB and Cornell Mall.

“First-Year Convocation is an annual event held to celebrate first-year students, honor the family and friends that have helped prepare them for this new phase of their academic journey and introduce them to the UNM Community,” Middlebrook wrote. “The convocation ceremony is specifically targeted to incoming first-year students.”

Masks are required indoors regardless of vaccination status at both Discover UNM and the First-Year Family Day events, per the state’s reimplemented indoor mask mandate.

The Student Activity Center’s Welcome Back Days’ activities will open up to all students again at 5 p.m. with Class Crawl, where guides will help students find the locations of their classes in a “personalized campus tour,” according to UNM Newsroom. Students can meet their guides on the north side of the SUB to print out their class schedule and start the tour.

Finally, a movie on the field will end the day at 8 p.m. where “Raya and the Last Dragon” will be playing outside on Johnson Field.

Since Class Crawl and Movie on the Field will both be held outside, masks will not be required but social distancing will be encouraged, according to SAC director Ryan Lindquist. He said SAC hopes that people remain in the groups that they’re arriving at the event with.

“Social distancing is recommended so we’ll try to remind people as they’re walking around but it’s not mandated,” Lindquist said.

The Welcome Back Days’ events will continue from Monday, Aug. 23 to Friday, Aug. 27 with differently themed days that have various participants and fun treats at the Duck Pond and other locations.
