The University of New Mexico baseball team took on the Texas Tech Red Raiders on April 8. The Lobos wasted no time during the game, starting the night off with two home runs that ignited a scoring surge — racking up seven runs in the first inning alone. UNM ended the game with a 15-5 win.
UNM Head Coach Tod Brown said he was pleased with the team's aggressive start.
“I thought our guys came out and had a great plan and executed it very well,” Brown said.
Along with the home runs, there was more to the Lobos’ high-scoring beginning.
“We took our base walks, got some hits, and strung something together. That's how we want to start games: we want to ambush early, and they did a good job,” Brown said.
The game saw the Lobos cycle through several pitchers. Brown reflected on the performance.
“We wanted to get different guys on, get some experience, keep their pitch counts low so they're ready for the weekend, but give them some good experience,” Brown said. “Good pitching beats good hitting. You can’t count on putting up seven runs every inning. Credit to Texas Tech’s pitchers — they made adjustments, mixed their pitches well, and got our hitters out.”
Down by seven runs, Texas Tech finally broke through in the fourth inning, but the Lobos had already built a towering lead and Texas Tech needed to step up their game. In the end, Texas Tech was only able to put up five runs. Lobos outfielder Will Asby put a final bang on the game with a triple in the eighth inning, ending the game early.
The Lobos came out on top with a score of 15-5.
