On April 25-27, the University of New Mexico Lobos baseball team went up against the San Jose State Spartans. The Lobos started the series opener on April 25 in the right rhythm, batting in six runs in the first inning. They then continued to put up a large number of runs on the board.
“Offense was cooking tonight, and good, good hitting conditions, and they really did a good job,” Head Coach Tod Brown said.
By the bottom of the fifth inning, with the Lobos holding a commanding 12-3 lead, there was little doubt among the crowd that the team was on its way to a win, prompting chants of “forfeit” from the stands.
In the sixth inning, the Lobos were able to score a total of 11 runs, three of them being home runs, which gave them a 20-point lead.
The Lobos blew out the Spartans 25-5 getting the job done in seven innings.
The second game of the series followed a similar outcome to the opener, with UNM ending the game with a 19-3 blowout win in seven innings.
Sunday's series finale was a wild card that came from the Spartans’ starting pitcher, Nolan George. Going into the ninth inning, UNM needed four runs to win the game, which they could not get.
“We have pitched a lot cleaner the last couple of weeks,” Brown said. “Today, we got behind, and we were catching up, and then we just could not stop the bleeding from the second inning to the seventh inning, and that was the difference.”
Sunday's final score was 14-12, going in the Spartans’ favor as the Lobos could not get the series sweep.
