Lobo women’s tennis sweeps WNMU and CSU Pueblo

The University of New Mexico Women’s tennis team started 2026 with a bang, sweeping both Western New Mexico University and Colorado State University Pueblo 7-0.

The Lobos started their day against WNMU and came out of the gate swinging with a whopping 6-0 wins in first and second-seed doubles, and a score of 6-1 in third-seed doubles. More than just doubles power, the Lobos handily picked up all six singles wins against WNMU, dropping only 10 sets out of 82 played overall.

The Lobos further demonstrated their new year’s resolve by dominating doubles against CSU Pueblo and coming away with an easy win in singles.

With seven new players on the roster, the Lobos hoped to use these matches as a litmus test of where the team is at mentally and culturally. Head Coach Vicky Maes hopes to “turn around doubles” this year after a less than satisfactory performance last season. Despite a full sweep of both schools, UNM did lose a few sets.

“Some people were tested a little bit in terms of nerves. I think what they did well was get a hold of themselves and settle down a little bit, they’re very coachable in that regard,” Maes said.

Coming back from a winter retreat refreshed and renewed, the Lobo women’s tennis team has a New Year’s resolution: win doubles point, win a Mountain West tournament match, and fight hard, win or lose. The Lobos are sitting at 2-0 after a great start to the season. On Friday, Feb. 6 they will be in Houston, Texas to take on the UT Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros.
