World renowned dance company Pilobolus, known for its storytelling through movement and human expression, will take the stage at Popejoy Hall this Saturday, April 11.
Since its founding by students at Dartmouth College in 1971, Pilobolus has claimed its title in performing arts, exploring dance, physicality and the human body.
The company has performed on Broadway, at the Oscars and the Olympic Games, and created over 160 dance works, according to Popejoy press release.
Renée Jaworski, co-artistic director of Pilobolus, said she’s been with the company for 26 years and danced with them for 9 years before taking on a director role.
Jaworski said the students who founded Pilobolus were four men with no dance training who needed to fulfill a P.E. credit.
“They were all really physically intelligent, so when the teacher had them in class, she knew right away that she wasn't going to teach them technique because of their interest in a more creative way of moving,” Jaworski said. “She got them using the movement that they innately knew how to do, running, jumping, rolling, so they had a really unique approach to movement.”
Today, dancers come from multiple backgrounds including ballet, modern dance, and athletics, Jaworski said.
“We're telling stories with our bodies, it doesn't matter if you get the stories, it just matters that you sit and watch and enjoy the amazing things that the dancers can do with their bodies,” Jaworski said.
Pilobolus is based out of Connecticut, but Jaworski says they have traveled to Albuquerque a number of times and enjoy the local audiences.
“When you go to a place like Popejoy, you feel the energy, you feel them with you with every piece,” Jaworski said.
