Lobos capture first win of season with dominant victory over UTRGV

The New Mexico Lobos swimming and diving team earned its first victory of the season on Friday, defeating the University of Texas, Rio Grande Valley 184–110.

The 74-point margin was UNM’s largest against a Division I opponent since their January 2020 win over New Mexico State.

Elsa Reel and Sophia Corder each scored 18 points, tying UTRGV diver Manou Meulebeek for the highest individual total, according to results from  Swimcloud.

Reel won the 50-yard breaststroke, clocking in at 29.39 seconds and the 200-yard breaststroke with a 2:19.12. Lobo Mollie Gorman placed second in the 200-yard breaststroke at 2:24.50.

Corder earned victories in both butterfly events, completing the 200-yard race with a 2:10.41 and the 50-yard race with a 25.89 time.

UNM swept the top three spots in the 200-yard freestyle. Liv Omahony finished first, ahead of her teammates Summer Wenger and Molly Wardrop, who came in second and third, respectively. Wenger would later win the 500-yard freestyle, with Eryn Quirsfeld placing second

Arianna Stokes narrowly beat her teammate Olivia Hann in the 50-yard freestyle, finishing with a time of 24.01 seconds to Hann’s 24.08. Hann won the 100-yard freestyle clocking a 52.17.

Stokes finished with 16 points overall, while Hann, Wenger, Myra Cansler and Jadyn Bruch each contributed 13 points for the Lobos.

Cansler secured another close victory for UNM in the 200-yard backstroke. Her time of 2:05.56 put her just 0.15 seconds ahead of UTRGV’s Annaleagh Stahl.  Bruch added a victory in the 1000-yard freestyle, clocking in at 10:42.92.

UNM competed in the final two swimming events as exhibitions, meaning its swimmers could not earn team points. Reel, Omahony and Corder posted the three fastest times in the 100-yard individual medley at 57.52, 58.63 and 59.55, respectively.
