Lobos protect the pit in a sweep against the Wolf Pack

The New Mexico Lobos looked to get back on track as they took on the Nevada Wolf Pack on Oct 2. The Lobos came into the game after losing seven straight, including back-to-back sweeps at Hawaii last weekend.

The Lobos snapped their rough stretch Friday, winning all 3 sets.

”We played a very efficient game,” UNM Head Coach Brian Hosfeld said.

The Lobos started off with two consecutive points after great serves from setter Madeleine Miller and scored their next 4 points coming from multiple errors from the Wolf Pack.

Lobo outside hitter Mina Stanojevic and middle blocker Reagan Miller stepped up in a big way, leading the Lobos to a 14-5 lead in the first  set. The Wolf Pack continued to give the Lobos points due to errors.

Nevada opposite hitter Madison Long attempted to give the Wolf Pack some momentum, but Reagan Miller would not have that as with her kill, the Lobos won the first set 25-14. The early going of the second set saw the Wolf Pack and Lobos pass the lead back and forth.

Lobo outside hitter Uliana Yastrub came up huge to help pull away from Nevada, scoring back-to-back points for the Lobos. Right after Yastrub, Reagan Miller would also do the same.

The Lobos went on to win the second set with a kill from Madeleine Miller. In the third set, Nevada middle blocker Karly Bonaventure gave the Wolf Pack an early point but the Lobos, with help from outside hitter Addison France, pulled ahead to an early lead.

Reagan Miller continued her hot streak, providing a huge momentum shift in favor of the Lobos . Stanojevic and Reagan Miller continued to help the Lobos by getting kills, eventually leading to the Lobos jumping out to a five-point margin over Nevada.

Hosfeld provided even more momentum to the Lobos by winning his first challenge of the game, in turn leading to the Lobos going up by nine. New Mexico finished strong to win the third set 25-14

New Mexico will look for their first back-to-back wins on Sunday as they protect The Pit again and take on the Wolf Pack once more.

“It was nice to protect the pit, [the] fans gave us energy,” Reagan Miller said.
