It didn’t hit me until I got back in my car.
I think it’s safe to assume this morning that groundhogs around the United States are seeing their shadows.
Before I came back to UNM on my 10-year plan for a bachelor’s degree, I worked male-dominated jobs.
I took a public speaking class about a million years ago and learned that humans only actually use about one-quarter of the available vocabulary in the English language.
Long live the one-upper. I am attaching myself to this mantra so I can avoid future frustration with my friend who always does it better than me, or anyone else in his earshot.
“Checking your bags” may have a different meaning when you head to the airport this holiday season. The Transportation Security Administration implemented full-body scanners at select national locations. Using X-ray technology, these scanners show a blurred naked image of boarding passengers.
Looking for a tasty option for fruit about to expire? Throw it in a pie! This one is easy for beginners and tasty, too. The whole thing will cost you about $8 and two hours of your time. Enjoy!
Every day, I walk past the Duck Pond on the way to Dane Smith, and I see the table. There I see students with the marker-drawn signs pumping people up about voting, and the token, sandwich-board-wearing guy inviting people to follow him to the table and register. It’s cool, but I wonder if it works.
Nowadays the newspapers read like People magazine.
There are a lot of things about school that interfere with my doing-nothing-of-importance time. I like to read a lot of books — mostly about things that have a little to do with my studies, or just things I want to learn about. Last year I read three books on electronics so I could build a light out of a potato. I recently donated those books and bought a nice lamp for my desk. Potatoes are better to eat anyway. Last Christmas, I learned how to crochet from a book and my family got scarves — not for Christmas, but they still really liked them. I also like to ride my bike, spend time
If you have taken a walk down Central Avenue in the neighborhood of Buffalo Exchange or the tiny police sub station or Taco Bell, you may have wandered by a giant marquee that says “Mars Hill.” You may have wondered what in God’s name is going on in there. Well, it turns out, everything that goes on in there is in God’s name.
I have decided that Hanna-Barbera’s “Super Friends” cartoon series is really a portrayal of the United Nations for kids and people who need a dumb-it-down approach to politics.
As I lean back on my ergonomic Home Solutions desk chair and bite into my Starbucks spinach and feta wrap, I can’t help but think of how irritated I’ve become by the subtle sponsorship plugs that occur in movies these days.
Finding food to fit your fix and your finances can take some finesse and can be more challenging than an introductory physics class.
We have seen the pictures of the oil-slicked birds and the sludge that has been washed up on the Gulf’s coastlines. This weekend, we saw local news reports on the effects the BP oil spill had on Fourth of July plans and Gulf resort areas that have in the past drawn many people during the holiday weekend. Businesses are losing money, kids are trying to avoid oil sludge while they build sand castles on the beach, and travel plans are made to avoid places that have been affected by the BP oil spill. While we are saddened over the images of those oil-slicked birds, how long will that last for people? Once we have washed off all the oil we can see, will we still be thinking about the oil we can’t see and the long-term effects of it?
If you can’t afford a vacation, UNM Recreation Services might have a solution for you.
Now that summer has arrived, the financial aid checks have cleared, and we have paid our bills — or most of our bills — it’s time to do something for you. There is a long list of things we would like to spend our leftover bucks on. I decided on a haircut. Being of the activist mindset, and quite partial to doing a little here and there for others, I wanted to donate my hair.
There is a website, NewspaperDeathWatch.com, that is monitoring the decline of the printed newspaper. The site claims to chronicle the death of the newspaper and the rebirth of journalism. The newspaper’s decline has reached new lows, and as the curve of printed news declines, the curve of electronic publications is reaching new heights.
Wildlife West wants to change the way we think when it comes to wind. Saturday and Sunday, the Wildlife West Nature Park will hold its Ninth Annual Wind and Green Energy Festival in Edgewood. Karen Leach, a volunteer for the organization, said wind power is essential in New Mexico’s renewable energy future. “It is extremely important to educate the public on how to capture and use our natural resources, such as wind power and water conservation,” Leach said.
Running, swimming and cycling … oh crap! If you were looking for something to whip you into shape besides the traditional physical education classes UNM offers, then this class may be for you.
