The Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday serves as an annual reminder of two of this country’s highest ideals — serving others and the creation of an equitable society. This year, amid the economic turmoil of our country and the suffering of our brothers and sisters in Haiti, the lessons from Dr. King’s life and the message of this holiday provided timely reminders to each of us individually and to society as a whole.

Around eight million people are expected to be victims of identity theft in 2009. With the holiday shopping season upon us, here are a few tips that may help you from becoming an identity theft statistic:

Americans are facing a dangerous situation with the war in Afghanistan, and students at the University of New Mexico need to be part of the national dialogue. History has shown that the American public tends to respond to military interventions overseas in one of three predictable ways.

I went to Peru over Thanksgiving break from Nov. 21-29. The country is beautiful, with mountains that make the Sandias look like speed bumps. The problem is, Peru suffers from some of the worst poverty in South America. Below are a few descriptions of some of the scenes and characters I encountered while in the country. Check out DailyLobo.com for my full travel excerpts.

The holiday season is one of the most stress-filled times of the year. And 2009 has not been the greatest of years. Combining family commitments, financial concerns heightened by the not-so-good economy, traveling, shopping and cooking with everyday stressors like working, it is no surprise many people feel overwhelmed around this time. In addition, holidays are often filled with memories of loved ones no longer in our lives, which can rekindle feelings of sadness and contribute to a sense of isolation.

More than 30 graduate students packed into the GPSA office Monday, hoping to hear their student leaders discuss a no-confidence vote in UNM’s athletics administration. The students who attended could only find space to sit on the floor or stand as their elected representatives wrestled with the important issue.

Dear Dr. Peg,

Victor Murthy’s column, “It’s time for UNM’s fat people to change their ways,” published in Tuesday’s paper, has drawn criticism for Murthy and the Daily Lobo itself. In just two days, the column has generated numerous letters to the editor and more than 80 comments online, which is unprecedented for any other opinion piece this year. Many of these comments questioned the Daily Lobo’s discretion in printing the letter. We would like to clarify a few points.

Last month, UNM received 41 notices that asserted we have people using the University network to download and upload digital music, movies and games without the copyright owner’s permission. This increase in the number of accusations made against UNM network users mirrors the increase in pending legal proceedings across the country against copyright violators. In other words, outfits like the Recording Industry Association of America, the Motion Picture Association of America and the Entertainment Software Association are getting serious about cracking down on illegal file sharing — which they call “piracy.”

Yes, it’s fun to read about the smoking ban on campus, abusive football coaches and the eternal struggle between left and right, but these issues are just distracting us all from the real problem that plagues the UNM campus: fat people.

Dear Dr. Peg,
Does HPV affect men?

In the midst of all this talk about health care reform, I am lucky to have ended up in the emergency room twice this year — once at a hospital in Albuquerque and another time in Barcelona, Spain. But I don’t have health insurance.

WASHINGTON — Take a hard look now. A new agency that consumers were promised would make bankers, credit card companies and mortgage lenders treat them fairly will never look as strong again.

President Barack Obama’s relief at the agreement that could quiet the political crisis over Afghanistan’s spoiled election masks his predicament as he weighs an expansion of the unpopular Afghanistan war.

Is it really October without a New York baseball franchise playing in the postseason?
For the last five years, I’ve felt kind of naked without the Yankees playing in the World Series.

In the special interest war over health care, the White House and congressional Democrats have the nation’s drug makers and hospitals generally on their side; the insurance industry, not so much.

Swine flu is here. It is all over New Mexico, including here at UNM. Have you had it yet? How about your friends and classmates? How many are out today with the flu? I’ll bet there are at least a few, and there will likely be more next week.

Not surprisingly, Steve Alford didn’t have any preseason premonitions when he was asked to estimate how many wins the UNM men’s basketball team needs to get into the NCAA Tournament this year.

Recently, there has been discussion on and off campus about Network Access Control, or NAC. Some folks have complained that NAC is slowing them down; others have said that NAC installs malicious software onto their computers; and still others think that NAC was a good band while they lasted (by the way, the 80s band was called “The Knack” not “NAC.”) So … let’s clear the air.
