Daily Lobo: Are you pre-med?
Steven Gates: I’m hoping. I haven’t really decided. I’m pretty sure I’m going to go for my master’s and be a graduate student. I’m not sure if I’m going to take it to a doctorate. That kind of depends on how I feel.
DL: That’s still kind of more planning than most freshmen have.
SG: I think so, too. I have an uncle who’s a radiologist, and he describes his job a lot. It seems interesting to me, so that’s what I’m hoping to do. And there’s a high demand for them, I hear.
DL: Are you from here?
SG: From Albuquerque — born and raised.
DL: Do you live near here?
SG: No, I have a place on
Central and Tramway. I live with my girlfriend.
DL: What are you doing on your laptop?
SG: I’m working on a trip to New York right now. I’m looking for airport costs — flight plans, to be honest.
DL: Why New York?
SG: I’ve just always wanted to be there during New Year’s and see the ball drop.
DL: Aren’t there hundreds of thousands of people there?
SG: Yeah. It’s ridiculous, but I’ve just always wanted to go. It just seems really interesting, and, I don’t know, it seems really cool to me. It’s really different from here. I’ve been there once, and I love it. There are, like, two- and three-story McDonald’s there. It’s ridiculous and just really cool to go and visit.
DL: So you’re planning on just heading up for Christmas break?
SG: Yeah, for like five days and then come back.
DL: That’s kind of expensive isn’t it? Aren’t plane tickets going up?
SG: Yeah. (laughs) My dad is helping us out.
DL: You and your girlfriend?
SG: Yeah.
DL: Does she go to school here, too?
SG: Yeah, and she’s doing the IFMD program. It’s like that interdisciplinary film and media arts thing.
DL: Is that a cool major?
SG: Oh yeah, she loves it.

Daily Lobo: Do you live on campus?
Lisa Baca: No, I live at home.
DL: What made you stay at home?
LB: Paper stacks — money. Well, I don’t know, I might live in the dorms (later) — I’m not sure.
DL: How does that affect your college experience, living at home?
LB: It probably hinders it a little bit. I have to go home, back and forth. I can’t stay or do as many activities as I want to.
DL: Do you have a curfew?
LB: Right now? Yeah.
DL: What time?
LB: Twelve-thirty on weekends. Ten-thirty during the week, so pretty much I can’t do anything.
DL: So, is it any different than high school?
LB: It’s way different — a lot more freedom.
DL: Even though you have a curfew?
LB: Well, I mean, over here at the campus you have a lot more freedom to do stuff. My parents don’t really bug me.
DL: Do they feel like you’re more mature, now that you’re in college?
LB: Mm-hmm. Probably. (I cannot) necessarily get away with stuff. They just don’t harass me as much (laughs).
DL: Do you do any on-campus activities?
LB: As of now, no, because I’m still trying to get situated with everything. I’d like to maybe join the student activities union or whatever it’s called.
DL: I don’t know what that is.
LB: Or student activity — something. I don’t know. Whatever.
DL: Any other hobbies?
LB: I like dance. A lot.
DL: What kind of dance?
LB: Ballet.
DL: How long have you been doing ballet for?
LB: A couple years now. I’m just taking the Ballet I class for now.

Daily Lobo: Why are you majoring in education?
Genell Burns: That’s a good question.
DL: Why are you carrying a gallon of water?
GB: I get thirsty sometimes.
DL: How many gallons of water do you think you drink a day?
GB: Um, less than one.
DL: Are you supposed to drink a gallon of water a day? Is that what’s healthy?
GB: Yeah, and if you’re active I think you’re supposed to drink more than that.
DL: Really?
GB: Yeah, but that’s a lot of bathroom time.
DL: How many more years until you graduate?
GB: Hopefully two, but I’m actually thinking about going back to film, because education is a lot more difficult than I thought it was going to be. I’m actually going to be doing the film program at CNM simultaneously, and I’m writing my thesis this year and doing the film program this year.
DL: What’s your thesis on?
GB: I’m still trying to figure that out. I was thinking, like, what goes into making a successful student in today’s society, because I’m sure it was a lot different than it was 30 years ago.
