by Mar°a B. Del R°o Daily Lobo In the unforgettable documentary “Se§oritas Extraviadas,” director Lourdes Portillo explores the mystery surrounding 200 kidnapped, raped and missing women in Juarez. She also documents the struggle of the victims’ families making the documentary intense and effective.

Handbook definitions offensive

The Hipster’s Handbook is a book full of magazine-style, smart-ass lists that can tell you whether or not you’re cool or, excuse me, “deck,” as one would say it if they were hip. Words like “hipster” used in a non-sarcastic setting make me cringe. “How-to” books have the same effect, unless they are about house building or furniture varnish.

Rebar hip addition to area

by Jacque Oldfield Daily Lobo Beyond the metal mesh exterior of Rebar, the renovated Sprockets space across from UNM, is a civilized, industrial chic — metal, yes, but definitely not scrap metal. Last Friday night, Rebar was packed with locals, mostly students watching a basketball game and a happy hour broke out.

Jazz genius’ new CD a sensual experience

Saxophone-playing jazz force Kenny Garrett’s musical presence is so strong it’s hard to picture him being a sideman to anyone. Perhaps having the opportunity to be jazz legend Miles Davis’ sideman is what gave him the power and confidence to deliver some of the jazz world’s freshest sounds.

AFI album profoundly haunting

Davey Havok is the punk rock equivalent of Edgar Allen Poe. California’s AFI, or A Fire Inside if, to quote the Dude, “you’re not into the whole brevity thing,” has been kinetically summoning Halloween-spirited black mojo for over a decade. The band’s newest masterpiece, Sing the Sorrow, renews the dooming prescription developed by their previous albums The Art of Drowning and Black Sails in the Sunset.

Gender-bender gala

The overly constraining terms “male” and “female” no longer suffice to define gender —not within the world of drag, at least. Friday night’s drag performance, sponsored by Del Otro Lado, UNM’s Gay and Straight Alliance, smashed societal boundaries regarding gender definition and the common fallacy that, in the drag world, only men dress up as women.

Graduate student artists display talent at gallery

UNM’s Jonson Gallery is host to art from 20 graduate art students in this year’s annual Juried Graduate Student Exhibition. The show, which had its opening reception March 28 and runs through May 9, is one of the most diverse shows in the gallery’s nine-year history, according to Curator Chip Ware.

Dorm Life

by Rafael Gallegos Daily Lobo The Vortex Theatre has taken a chance on a local playwright. UNM graduate student Jason Witter’s “Smith Hall” will run for most of April as part of the Vortex’s 2003 season. Set in a dorm of a public college — think UNM’s Coronado — “Smith Hall” is the theatrical equivalent of movies like “Animal House” and “American Pie.

Evanescence explores hard love

While the word Evanescence may signify a disappearance, this band is firmly planted in its music. The best way to describe Fallen, the second full-length CD release from the Arkansas quartet Evanescence, would be haunting, melodious and very gothic. Vocalist Amy Lee brings her unique voice to a band that may otherwise be grouped in the nondescript New Metal/Goth genre.

Funk Brothers essence of Motown hits

The Motown sound is legendary, turning out artists like Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross and The Temptations to name a few. “Standing in the Shadows of Motown,” tells the story of the Funk Brothers, a band that never achieved fame or fortune, but played on more hit tracks than the Beach Boys, Elvis, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones combined.

Jeremy longs for stardom

It is exceedingly appropriate that porn star Ron Jeremy made his first mark in the "Regular Guy" section of Playgirl Magazine. This is his appeal - he's the regular guy who became a porn star. This is the centerpiece of the Scott J. Gill documentary "Porn Star: The Legend of Ron Jeremy," which was recently released on VHS and DVD by Docurama.

Reality suspended in Europe

by John D. Bess Daily Lobo When I first started playing bass, I knew this was what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. Unfortunately, most artists learn that art doesn't pay. Still, we drive on, devoting our time outside of our so-called normal lives of jobs, school and families to creating.

Community honors activist

Hundreds of people gathered Saturday in a peace march to celebrate CÇsar Chavez month. The march, like Chavez, was non-violent and strong - only fitting in these turbulent times. After the march, people gathered at the CÇsar Chavez Community Center in honor of the man who inspired so many with grace and humility.

'Fever' captures essence of '70s

Let's be honest with ourselves - the '70s are dead. Polyester leisure suits are a thing of the past. The era that spawned many of us older students tried to make a comeback over the weekend in the form of an Off-Broadway musical deceptively titled "Saturday Night Fever.

Novelist Allende caters to no one

Isabel Allende did not come to Popejoy Hall Wednesday night to address UNM's resident literary snobs. "I never studied literature," she said Wednesday in an interview with the Daily Lobo. "And frankly, I don't care for the way literature is taught in schools.

Artist Sanchez reflects nature

by Elizabeth Cook-Romero Daily Lobo Printmaker Carol Sanchez's mezzotints, on display at the Coleman Gallery on Central Avenue, use a 17th-century technique to create velvety sensuous images. Sanchez reflects nature, but she does not copy it. Abstracted branches, seedpods, flowers and body parts emerge from seductively dark backgrounds.
