Darwin's scientific theory not meant to dispute Bible

Editor, I would like to address several key points raised in Dennis Kinzler's letter in the Daily Lobo on Wednesday. First, Darwin did not propose a theory "to dispute the Bible." He made observations of the natural world, took into account other information available to him at the time and proposed a theory in accordance with the natural world to explain how these observed phenomena may have occurred.

Evolution should not be put in the same class as religion

Editor, Dennis Kinzler's letter to the Daily Lobo on Wednesday contains at its core a fallacy of equivocation so brutal that it is necessary to draw attention to it. In fact, his letter contains so many logical errors that, perhaps, it would be better to address them individually.

Anti-evolution arguments full of holes, ignore facts

Editor, It seems like every few weeks or so, some right-wing religious fanatic gets his opinion published in the Daily Lobo. His opinion is valid, of course, except that it lacks a crucial concept - the facts. The current round of ignorance comes via Dennis Kinzler, whose rousing letter of misinformation and talking points published in the Daily Lobo on Wednesday is standard for zealots.

UNM motorcycle parking convenient and affordable

Editor, I disagree on several levels with Rebecca Granato's letter published in the Daily Lobo on Wednesday. The first is the availability and expense of motorcycle parking. Although I usually commute by bicycle, there are times when circumstances dictate a mode of transportation that can get me farther, faster.

Musician thrives off audience interaction

Seattle-based musician Jason Webley said he's a bigger deal in Russia than in the United States. "I've been going over there for about six years, and people there really like me, and my promoters do a good job," Webley said. "More people come out to see me in Russia than anywhere else that I play."

Comparing the Holocaust to abortion is outrageous

Editor, It deeply disturbs me that anti-abortion groups on campus associate abortions with the Holocaust. My intentions are not to criticize their platforms, beliefs or moral values. I simply want to indicate that by making comparisons to an event in history that has nothing to do with abortions is both ill-founded and wrong.

Explore a hands-on museum

Explora Science Center and Children's Museum is for kids of all ages. The museum, at 1701 Mountain Road N.W., offers exhibits that effect change not only in the viewer, but in the exhibit itself. When the next person interacts with an exhibit, there is evidence of the previous interaction. This cycle continues infinitely.

RIAA threatens to sue network users

Seventeen people may soon have to face the music for illegally sharing files on UNM's network. The University received pre-lawsuit notices from the Recording Industry Association of America on Wednesday, offering network users the opportunity to settle their cases before going to court, said Richard Mertz, a lawyer for UNM.

Darwin's theory was not made to dispute religion

Editor, In response to Dennis Kinzler's argument in Tuesday's Daily Lobo that evolution is another religion, I want to say that the definition of evolution is, "The change in the concentration of particular alleles (genes) in a community of individuals." Where in that definition does the clause "If God does not exist" come from? This seems to be a keystone in many anti-evolutionists' logic.

Third World resists feminism

by Rinita Mazumdar Daily Lobo columnist The word feminism evokes anger, curiosity, disdain, laughter and jeers from men and women around the globe. In so far as this reaction is concerned, feminism shares its fate with other resistance and new social movements, such as the workers' movement in the 19th century.

UNM needs better parking for motorcycles, scooters

Editor, I recently purchased a scooter. The last one I had was a 49cc, and I could park it at any bike rack at UNM as long as I left room for the bicyclists. The new scooter I have is a 125cc Genuine Buddy. According to Parking and Transportation Services, I had to purchase a motorcycle permit and park my vehicle in motorcycle parking.

UNM to develop North Golf Course

Residents of the North Campus area want to stop the University from developing a nearby golf course, but it appears to be a lost cause. "We're going to move ahead with the retirement community for the North Golf Course with participation with the neighborhood association," said Jamie Koch, president of the Board of Regents.
