Exhibit celebrates New Deal art

A good deal came out of the Great Depression. The UNM Art Museum is marking the 75th anniversary of Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal with "For the Greater Good: New Deal Art in New Mexico." It opened Tuesday. The exhibit explores art from the 1930s, when Roosevelt implemented the New Deal, a sequence of programs to help people recover from the Great Depression.

Snotty hero makes 'Jumper' fall flat

Nobody likes David Rice. Rice (Hayden Christensen) is the focus of "Jumper," which came out Feb 14. The film follows "Rice Bowl," as the high school bullies call him, from age 15, when he realizes he has the ability to teleport. He soon masters his powers, and before he knows it, he has built an exciting, comfortable life stealing money by teleporting it out of banks.

Festival celebrates Italian film

Italian Film Festival director Ronaldo Patrizio-Steiner didn't want to host a boring fundraiser. "(Albuquerque nonprofits) all pretty much do the same thing," Patrizio-Steiner said. "They have a golf tournament or a run or a dinner with a silent auction. And I said, 'Don't do those things, because everyone else is doing them - let's do something different.

Showcasing the art of striptease

The Pez dispensers on display at the Kimo Theater won't make it into children's hands anytime soon. To get a piece of candy, Pez eaters push back the enormous wooden breasts of a burlesque dancer. The dispensers, customized by folk artist Steve White, are just an example of the artwork showcased at "Burlesque," an exhibit at the Kimo Theater.

Explore a hands-on museum

Explora Science Center and Children's Museum is for kids of all ages. The museum, at 1701 Mountain Road N.W., offers exhibits that effect change not only in the viewer, but in the exhibit itself. When the next person interacts with an exhibit, there is evidence of the previous interaction. This cycle continues infinitely.

Festival gets things moving

The Best in the Southwest animation and graphics festival explored the art and business of graphic design. "We went to a lot of conferences where we learned some techniques, and we saw some inspiration, but it was always just pieces or things, and we thought, well, what do we really want to know?" festival coordinator Becky Padilla said. "We aren't finding it out there, so let's do it."

Garden introduces Zen to Zia

The Botanic Garden unveiled its Sasebo Japanese Garden on Saturday with a ceremony featuring performers from around the world. "The whole thing is just absolutely phenomenal," visitor and Dubai resident Inge Krieger said. "It's very yin-yang." Outside the garden entrance, there's a basin for ceremonial cleansing.
