First day at school for UNM president

David Schmidly was almost late to his first day of work because he wanted to remove the orange Oklahoma State stripe from his Mercury Mountaineer before coming to campus. "I have replaced it with a beautiful red stripe and Lobo insignia on both sides," he said. He began his tenure as UNM's 20th president June 1.

Photographer hits road with one-man band

Rock 'n' roll is a trip. Kevin Fullerton, of the one-man band Rochester Fosgate, went on a five day tour through Arizona and southern California. His friend, Rocky Norton, photographed the trip documentary-style. They went to Flagstaff, Ariz., Phoenix, San Diego, Huntington, Calif., Los Angeles and Venice Beach.

Student to leave City Council race

The GPSA president stopped campaigning for the District 6 City Council seat after less than two weeks in the race. Joseph Garcia said he decided to leave the race May 12 and will withdraw his candidacy sometime this week. Garcia said he doesn't have enough money or influence to win.

A union at UNM Hospital filed a complaint May 24 because it says the hospital is trying to stifle salary negotiations. The National Union of Hospital and HealthCare Employees District 1199 N.M. filed a complaint with the UNM Labor Relations Board because union members don't make enough money

Council OKs teen center, disputes use of funding

City Council voted to renovate the former Ice House building to use for a cultural facility for teens, but there is debate on how the center and its programs should be funded, the city council president said. Debbie O'Malley said that although there are funding concerns, the council supports the initiative.

Track shines at regional meet

by Adrian Doerfler Daily Lobo The UNM track and field team had one of its best showings at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships under head coach Matt Henry on May 25-26 in Des Moines, Iowa. Of the eight athletes who qualified for regionals, four qualified for nationals and two are hoping to advance as at-large bids.

Freshman golfer finishes strong

Staff Report The No. 19 UNM women's golf team finished its season with a 22nd place showing at the NCAA National Championships held at the LPGA International Legends Golf Course in Daytona Beach, Fla. The Lobos concluded their 13th appearance at the championships with a four-day total of 1,254 - 102-shots over par.

State-of-the-art facility to better cancer research

The UNM Cancer Research and Treatment Center will put New Mexico on the map for cancer research, the center's director said. "We already have the people," Dr. Cheryl Willman said. "We already have the expertise, and now we are building a world-class facility to accommodate that."

Bahamas trip no vacation

The UNM men's basketball team has had mixed results in its first competition under head coach Steve Alford. The Lobos left May 25 for a week-long trip to the Bahamas, where they are playing three exhibition games against Bahamian club teams and one game against the College of the Bahamas Caribs.

Network users hit with piracy suits

The Recording Industry Association of America filed lawsuits on May 17 against 16 unidentified UNM network users suspected of illegally downloading music on the Internet, according to a news release from the association. The association monitors the Internet for illegal music sharing and logs the IP addresses of violators.

White Sands UFO crash footage may have been concocted by hoax artist

In the last "My Strange New Mexico," we examined a mysterious film that many believe shows a UFO crashing in the desert of the White Sands Missile Range in 1997. In the film, a white, football-shaped craft plummets from the sky, skips violently across the ground and explodes. Where the film came from, who shot it, or even when it was first viewed, has remained uncertain.
