Letter: Nonvoters cast their vote for Republican status quo

Editor, I have been hearing on UNM campus and seeing in the Daily Lobo a lot of foolishness vis-a-vis voting or not voting in the upcoming election. The 2000 election showed that individual votes matter. In retrospect, it also showed that there is a huge difference between a Democrat and a Republican victory.

Letter: Most Christians want to educate gays on Bible

Editor, On Monday, I watched a comedy on a major television network in which the main character said she didn't want to go to church because Christians hate gay people. I found that disturbing. Of course, there is the occasional fringe group, but the great majority of Christians don't hate gays.

Column: Don't be sexless, use protection

by Peggy Spencer Daily Lobo columnist Dear Dr. Peg, I'm freaking out. I went to a great party last night and had a fantastic time, but I guess I had too much to drink, and there was this really attractive person, and one thing led to another, and we had sex.

Column: Exhibit on abortion promotes dialogue

by Matt Martinez Daily Lobo guest columnist An exhibit by Justice for All - a nonpartisan, nonreligious organization - is now in the last day of its stay at UNM. The group's goal of creating dialogue about the issue of abortion was a success, as hundreds of students engaged in critical thinking about a sensitive and under-discussed issue on campus.

Student Carlos Rael, right, passes a petition Monday to students Jenica Houlberg, center, and Will McMain asking for the removal of Justice for All, an anti-abortion organization, from campus.

Opinions clash over abortion

Fifteen 8-foot-wide, two-story-tall panels displaying aborted fetuses are stirring debate in Smith Plaza, south of Zimmerman Library. The exhibit is presented by Justice For All, an anti-abortion organization with a UNM chapter. Student Mohammad Bundrage said it's a one-sided presentation.

UNM center could see more state funding

Gov. Bill Richardson announced Monday that he will ask the state Legislature for $750,000 to expand UNM's Center for Development and Disabilities. The money would be part of a $5.8 million package to help disabled New Mexican children. "The year of the child is coming to a close - in fact, we're coming into the year of water - but we want to keep helping children," Richardson said. "I want to do something for disabled kids."

Column: Leave the nuclear beast in peace

Since the dawn of the Atomic Age, nuclear-energy issues, carrying the terrifying implications that they do, have always been simmering in one way or another, whether it's Chernobyl, the doomsday clock making its march toward midnight or frustration about uranium isotopes seeping into aquifers that cute 5-year-olds drink from.

Letter: Military Commissions Act strips rights, allows torture

Editor, Last week, President Bush signed the Military Commissions Act of 2006, which gives the president extreme powers over those he arbitrarily labels enemy combatants. This can be anyone who the government has a suspicion of involvement in terrorism, which could conceivably include giving money to the wrong charity, associating with the wrong people or hindering the war effort by protesting government's policies.

Letter: Closure of Zia Lot causes South Lot game-day chaos

Editor, This year, I was basically forced to park in South Lot. I hate parking in this lot. Parking there adds an extra 10 minutes to my commute, plus another couple of minutes for the shuttle ride. Last year, I parked in G Lot and absolutely loved it. I was planning on buying a permit for that lot again this year but was not allowed.

Letter: Politicians listen to voters, nonvoters have no voice

Editor, In response to J.P. Farish and Richard Doerfler's anti-voting letters in Friday's Daily Lobo, I must note that this seems to be a disturbing trend. Some intelligent, politically conscious people seem to be under the impression that by choosing not to vote, instead of just neglecting to do, they have more of a voice in the government than a citizen of a dictatorship.

Letter: Racist, homophobic actions tear down fraternity facade

Editor, I am writing in response to Ronnie Garcia's letter in Thursday's Daily Lobo. I think Garcia misunderstands why some of us don't want fraternities on our campus. It is not that the University is forcing fraternities off campus because of stereotypes that students or administrators may believe, but instead, because of the stereotypes that fraternity members have about society - that is, their ideas of what it is to be masculine and heterosexual.
