Drought summit meets
October 19Jonathan Overpeck, a University of Arizona professor, said the planet is in danger if people don't take steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Overpeck is the director of the Institute for the Study of the Planet Earth at the University of Arizona. He gave a presentation Wednesday about the greenhouse effect and climate change at the fourth annual New Mexico Drought Summit at the Continuing Education North Building. The greenhouse effect is when gases, mainly carbon dioxide, get trapped in the atmosphere and cause the planet to heat up, he said. Carbon dioxide levels have been rising rapidly since the last half of the 20th century, Overpeck said.
Column: Dying for a PS3 or a Nintendo Wii? Don't hold your breath for preorders
Rhian Hibner | October 19Anyone who wants to preorder a Sony PlayStation 3 or Nintendo Wii can forget about it. EB Games and its sister store, GameStop, blew through their entire preorder stock for systems within hours of announcing availability. Neither the Wii nor the PlayStation 3 is available.
Letter: Most, but not all Christians criticize gay community
October 19Editor, I am writing in response to Robert Ortiz's letter in Tuesday's Daily Lobo. I agree with Ortiz that it is not simply Christianity that holds negative views toward homosexuality, but I disagree with just about everything else he said. The reason that David Gonzalez primarily targeted Christians in his letter on Monday is because the greatest opposition toward the gay community comes from the Christian community.
Letter: Right to smoke infringes on others' right to clean air
October 19Editor, In response to Deadra Wright's letter in Tuesday's Daily Lobo, what Constitution is she reading? Nowhere in the U.S. Constitution does it grant or imply a person's right to smoke. Wright may have the right to buy cigarettes, but the right to smoke them publicly is a gray area.

Letter: Nonvoters do not fight the system effectively
October 18Editor, I am writing in response to Deanna Delgado's letter in Monday's Daily Lobo about the volunteer who asked her boyfriend if he wanted to register to vote. While I agree that the volunteer's comment was unprofessional, I don't think it was completely unfounded.

A-list cast can't redeem flick
Rhian Hibner | October 18Actors have this funny way of surprising everyone. Tom Hanks went from comedy to being a serious actor with "Philadelphia." Bruce Willis showed his introspective side in "The Sixth Sense." It is apparently Leonardo DiCaprio's turn.
Letter: Many reasons to vote despite bad candidates
October 18Editor, Deanna Delgado's letter in Monday's Daily Lobo missed the point. Nonvoters do not accomplish more than voters. The reason people get so annoyed with nonvoters is that not voting accomplishes nothing. Sure, the Democrats and the Republicans suck. Alternatives? The Democrats effectively painted the Green Party as a spoiler to maintain their market share of the voters, and the Republicans offered money to the Green Party, effectively backing up the Democratic claim that the Green Party was tied to Republicans.
Greeks enhance UNM community
Caleb Fort | October 18When student Bryan Deshayes came to UNM from Los Alamos in 2003, he didn't have a lot of friends.
Column: Don't talk trash, talk business
October 18The problem with the political campaign system is that nothing of substance is ever discussed. Sure, candidates mention Iraq, support family values and promote their own integrity, but what about the issues that affect citizen's day-to-day lives?
Column: Fearless cartoon tackles political, social taboos
Joe Buffaloe | October 18Television has always struggled to stay socially and politically relevant. It's not exactly where you go for intelligent entertainment most of the time. Who turns to "The OC" or "The O'Reilly Factor" for mature discussions of important, controversial issues?
Letter: Shameless love a strong foundation for happiness
October 18Editor, I treasure mutually passionate romance with a man, but I will not for any man on earth surrender or compromise my war tax refusal, my living simply, my having no car, my all-raw vegan food, my urine therapy, my walking and vigorous daily exercise, my freedom to be naked and my strong public stands of conscience.
