GPSA: convince us to fund Daily Lobo

The Graduate and Professional Student Association delayed the decision to fund the Daily Lobo for a second time. Erin Phillips, GPSA Theatre and Dance representative, proposed to give $15,803.25 to the student newspaper during GPSA’s meeting on Saturday. This amount is equivalent to $2.85 from each of the 5,545 graduate students.

High school students: higher standards are OK

Albuquerque high school students seem willing to buckle down and meet the proposed admission standards the Board of Regents is discussing today. Manzano High School student Jessica Broomhall said UNM should raise the bar and encourage students to succeed in high school. “Being in high school and looking at the majority of students with me, they don’t really care or work hard, but they can pretty much get into New Mexico colleges pretty easily,” Broomhall said.

Legislature approves tuition fee hike

SANTA FE — The UNM Board of Regents will now decide how to stop the bleeding from the deep cuts formed by the Legislature’s special session. The special session adjourned late last week after four days in session.

Editor, It was great to be present for Wednesday night’s victory over TCU at The Pit. The game was exhilarating, the crowd was loudly cheering on our men in cherry and silver and a crowd rushed the floor when the victory was sealed at the final buzzer.

Center offers tips on campus safety

Personal safety has been a hot issue on campus since the Feb. 15 stabbing, and the Women’s Resource Center wants to show students how to kick crime in the face. The WRC is hosting a self-defense presentation Monday to inform the UNM community how to stay safe.

UNM Health Sciences Center notified about 1,900 patients that their personal information was compromised by hackers. The hackers had access to a list containing some personal information.

Dems: Tax hikes a necessary evil

State legislators passed $240 million worth of tax increases Wednesday after a heated debate on the House floor. The measure, an essential component in completing the state budget, passed the House by a vote of 38-28, after being debated for nearly three hours. The bill will now go to the Governor’s desk for executive approval.

As the clock struck zero, the UNM men’s basketball team lined up two ladders, one under each basket, and cut down the nets at The Pit. To get there, the Lobos (28-3 overall, 14-2 MWC) had to fend off TCU.

'Meta Morph' dances through Mexico

The Department of Theatre and Dance is UNM’s best-kept secret. “Meta Morph,” this year’s faculty dance show, will provide a glimpse into what the dance program has to offer, said Donna Jewell, department head and artistic director. “There’s a lot of talent in the Department of Theatre and Dance,” Jewell said.

Anticlimactic season closer after intense win vs. BYU

Conference cliffhanger? Hardly. This could be perceived to be as listless as games come, the anticlimactic point in the season. And so, the UNM men’s basketball team follows arguably the best game in Mountain West Conference history, against BYU, with quite possibly one of the worst. At home – against, well, TCU, one of the conference’s doormats. Today’s game stands in stark contrast to the Lobos’ season finale a year ago.
