Pride Title Holders recognized during 2018 parade

This year, four people were recognized as 2018 New Mexico Pride Title Holders. According to the Albuquerque Pride website, recipients must register and win their pageant, as well as engage communities in a year long project to “educate, and bring awareness” to LGBTQ culture and issues, to become a Title Holder. Chris Salas, also known as Topher Daniels, is a University of New Mexico alumnus, and holds the Mr. New Mexico Pride 2018 title.

Column: Reconciling faith with LGBTQ identity

In early December of last year, I kissed a girl for the first time. It felt, among all the usual things associated with a kiss, as wholly natural as my first kiss with a guy years ago. I had been dimly aware that I was not straight, but attracted to both sexes since my years in Catholic high school — it wasn’t until college that I consciously acknowledged it. By this time, I felt ready to tell my family, and from there, others. I remember thinking Christmas might be a good time.

HIV testing centers around UNM

With youths aged 13 to 24 making up 21 percent of new HIV diagnoses in the U.S., according to the CDC, it’s no surprise that many HIV clinics are available to young people . Specifically, at the University of New Mexico, there are three HIV Education and Resource clinics that exist, today. Located on campus grounds, the Student Health and Resource Center, the LGBTQ Resource Center and the the UNM Truman Health Services Center all offer monthly testing.

Amidst the heat, ABQ celebrates Pride Fest

The smell of sunscreen filled the air from the intersection of Central Avenue and Girard Boulevard to Expo New Mexico as Albuquerque residents were shoulder-to-shoulder for the city’s annual Pride Fest Parade on June 9. The three day event celebrated its last day as thousands of people lined up along Central Avenue and waved at community organizers, businesses and local politicians in rainbow decorated floats.

Movie Review: Deadpool 2 continues to redefine superhero genre

As someone who had not yet seen the first “Deadpool” film and is not incredibly keen on superhero movies in general, I was not at all excited to see “Deadpool 2.” That being said, this movie was so much more than your average superhero movie. It wasn’t at all child-friendly and was made up of an extreme amount of crude humor — not at all what I was expecting.

Johnson Center to undergo construction until 2020

Major renovations and expansions of Johnson Center on the University of New Mexico’s main campus is set to begin mid-June and last until early spring 2020 — bringing closures and relocations with it. The construction of the over 100,000 square foot space will cost $35 million, all of which comes from student fees, according to Jim Todd, director of recreational services.

Desert cottontails hopped from the safety of their dens to eat turf, kissed with fine drops of morning dew, next to robins prodding the damp earth with their beaks.

Profile: Brian Colón touts financial experience Auditor campaign

After losing the Albuquerque mayoral race in 2017, Brian Colon decided to run for another office — State Auditor of New Mexico. The former Democratic Party chairman is challenging state Rep. Album Review: Pusha T creates classic with "Daytona"

Hip-Hop has entered a strange phase of punk rap, where there’s an over saturation of “Lil’ this” and “Lil’ that’s”, mumble rap has peaked and a rapper having colored hair doesn’t start and end with Nicki Minaj anymore. Kanye West and Pusha T saw this and instead of making another high art, experimental album like “The Life Of Pablo,” they hunkered down in Wyoming and spent a year and a half finding the cure to this ailing genre, this would take the form of “DAYTONA.” Before the release of “Daytona,” which is the first of many G.O.O.D Music albums coming this month, Diddy released a handwritten note stating that “Daytona” is “amodern day masterpiece. A flawless Hip-Hip gem. Classic but current. In real time! A true classic!”This kind of praise for an album that wasn’t event publicly available could prove detrimental by setting standards too high and leaving room to disappoint.

Profile: Michelle Lujan Grisham wants to revamp economy and education

U.S. Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham has decided to change things up and run for governor of the state of New Mexico. “Serving in Congress has immersed me in the challenges New Mexicans are facing — and I want to do more,” Grisham said in an interview with the Daily Lobo.

2018 Midterm Election Preview

New Mexico 1st Congressional District early voting is in full swing. The primary for all parties is on Tuesday June 5, with early voting continuing until Saturday June 2. Voters will be voting on numerous posts, including U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives, Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, Auditor and New Mexico House of Representatives. There are several locations across Albuquerque open for early voting until June 2. These locations include the Bernalillo County Visitor Center, the Clerk’s Annex, Desiderio Community Center, Los Altos Center, Tijeras City Hall, among others.

Profile: Apodaca promises progressive agenda

The office of New Mexico governor is up for grabs in 2018. Jeff Apodaca is one of three Democrats running in the race. He will go up against Michelle Lujan Grisham and Joseph Cervantes in the primary elections this June to secure the Democratic spot on the ballot. Apodaca said he joined the race for governor not because he wanted a career in politics or because it was “his turn,” but because he was tired of New Mexico being ranked last in everything.

Movie Review: "The Miracle Season" puts unique spin on sports dramas

Whether it was on an airplane, in middle school, or on the Hallmark Channel, most of us have seen our fair share of inspirational sports movies. These films are often on the cheesier side, striving to be a family-friendly movie that good for both young children and adults and attempt makes us feel inspired by their use of tragedy and drama. Released on April 6, “The Miracle Season” is a more than your average sports movie. The film manages to delve just a little bit deeper into my thoughts and emotions than sports films normally do.

Concert Review: Skizzy Mars shows promise at Sunshine Theater

On the fourth to last stop on his “Are You Ok?” tour, Myles Mills, known by his stage name Skizzy Mars, made a full effort at the Sunshine Theater on May 8th. Although Skizzy Mars appeared at UNM’s 2017 Fiestas, he hasn’t actually been on a proper tour for two years. With the 2018 release of his latest EP “are you OK?,” Skizzy was ready to hit the road once again. In spite of Albuquerque being Skizzy’s 21st show in the span of his two-month tour, it’s not hard to believe that this could’ve been his opening performance. His show was full of bouncy enjoyable tracks, a positive attitude and undying charisma. From stage left to stage right, it was hard to find a moment when he wasn’t moving, dancing or jumping.

College of Pharmacy selects new dean

After undergoing a rigorous national selection process, a new dean of the University of New Mexico College of Pharmacy has been chosen. Donald Godwin, Ph.D., has been chosen as the new dean. Godwin has been at UNM for 22 years. He began his academic career by completing a bachelor’s in biology at the University of Delaware before going on to attain a doctorate in pharmaceutical sciences at the University of South Carolina. He then started working at UNM as an assistant professor.
