Inaugural Campus Safety Week leaves room for improvement

Last week UNM held its first comprehensive Campus Safety Week, and while some elements were successful, many of the events seem to have fallen short of their goals. As University officials plan for another Safety Week next fall, they are examining the pros and cons of the inaugural event, which included a shelter-in-place exercise, the annual Campus Safety Walk, fire drills, safety lectures and other activities.

Longtime voice of UNM sports Mike Roberts passes away

For 42 years Mike Roberts’ voice rang true to UNM athletics. While the former broadcaster started with New Mexico football, Lobo fans will largely associate his commentary with basketball. On Tuesday afternoon, Roberts passed away at age 83 after a bout with cancer.

ASUNM, County Clerk's Office offer training to get young people to vote

The Associated Students of UNM’s Office of Governmental Affairs is partnering with the Bernalillo County Clerk’s Office to bring non-partisan voter registration agent training sessions to the University, as election day draws ever nearer. Nathan Cowan, ASUNM’s governmental affairs director, said the initiative is one of the three top priorities for the ASUNM office.

Lobo to compete in Rio 2016 Paralympics

UNM sophomore Nick Slade was born without a right hand. Luckily, he didn’t need one to make it to one of the biggest sporting events on the planet. Slade will be representing the U.S. at the Summer Paralympics in Rio, where he will be competing in the long jump. Slade said he competed in track and soccer while in high school at Albuquerque Academy, but so far has only played intramural soccer at UNM.

From DA to photographer: Gil Garcetti to speak on the justice system, photography

Gil Garcetti, professional photographer and former Los Angeles District Attorney during the OJ Simpson case, is coming to UNM to talk about race, the media, the justice system and photography in a presentation entitled, “The OJ Trial and Beyond: ‘OJ: Made in America’ Lessons for ‘Justice.’” Garcetti served 32 years as LA district attorney, overseeing high profile cases such as the OJ Simpson trial, the Menendez Brothers trial, the LAPD Rampart police scandal and the Michael Jackson trials.

Locals convene at UNM in solidarity against the Dakota Access Pipeline

On Thursday afternoon, Kiva Club members held a demonstration on campus protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline on campus and saying it would hurt the communities the pipeline would run through. Hundreds gathered outside the SUB in a show of solidarity with the protesters who have amassed on Standing Rock Indian Reservation in North Dakota over the past few months in protest.

UNM students have limited time to claim lost items

Have you ever wondered what happens to unclaimed items at UNM’s lost and found? A bulletin board full of keys, organized by car model, hangs in a small room where textbooks, documents, mail, electronics, clothing, backpacks and thermoses are stored at UNM Police Department’s Lost and Found on the first floor of Hokona Hall.

First game with alcohol sales goes off without a hitch

UNM Athletics and other organizations around New Mexico are providing sports fans of a certain age with a new way to enjoy the game, with the start of alcohol sales at home games for various sports. The decision comes amid a national trend as many schools are adopting the policy of alcohol sales at college sporting events, with New Mexico State University having started sales last season.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Latin American and Iberian Institute of UNM held a lecture, where journalist and author Alex Cuadros discussed international media coverage of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil leading up to the 2016 Olympic games. Cuadros, an Albuquerque native, is the author of “Brazillionaires: Wealth, Power, Decadence, and Hope in an American Country.”

Freshmen living proposal to go before the Board of Regents

The proposed rule requiring all incoming freshmen to live on campus will now go before the full Board of Regents, despite concerns from the undergraduate student body. Associated Students of UNM President Kyle Biederwolf spoke at Tuesday’s Finance and Facilities subcommittee meeting to voice ASUNM’s opinion on the new policy that would drastically change the lives of future students.

UNM students broaden horizons through prestigious award

This year’s recipients of the highly coveted Critical Language Scholarship Award has been named, and two of them have exhibited why with their previous experiences and future aspirations. The CLS Program, a fully-funded summer overseas language and cultural immersion program, aims to broaden the base of Americans studying and mastering critical languages while building relationships between the people of the United States and other countries.

Students find opportunity at internship fair

UNM’s Innovation Academy is on a mission to create a new intersection between higher education and innovative new companies, by holding internship fairs that connect students with startups. Last week the Innovation Academy held its second internship fair. It was attended by 100 students and 16 employers.

Fox News criticizes UNM's new training program

The University of New Mexico has been no stranger to making national headlines in recent years, many of them putting the University under fire, as in the case of its handling of sexual assault cases and the campaign to abolish what is allegedly an offensive University seal. UNM was back in the headlines recently because of its updated training for employees, which places a focus on sensitivity training.

Deborah Helitzer, associate vice chancellor for Research Education at the UNM Health Sciences Center, is the founding dean of the College of Population Health.

UNM's new degree program is first of its kind

UNM is launching the first undergraduate degree program in population health in the country, allowing students the chance to study in a field that is particularly vital in the country. The College of Population Health was formed last year, and is rolling out its first major program this fall.
