Resolution proposes ban on gay marriage

One state legislator believes same-sex marriages should be outlawed to prevent “dadlessness” in the state. New Mexico Sen. William Sharer, R-Farmington, said same-sex marriages take away the father figure that is present in a heterosexual marriage, which leads to social problems.

UNM student organizations bear cost cuts

In the first of two deliberation sessions, UNM’s Student Fee Review Board met Saturday to discuss where to allocate student money in the next fiscal year. While none of the decisions are final, the SFRB gave an estimated amount for most of the ethnic centers and also the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning Resource Center.

GPSA backs immigrant licenses

The graduate student government expressed their support of undocumented students at a council meeting on Saturday. UNM’s Graduate and Professional Student Association at UNM passed a resolution that supports all students being granted state-issued driver’s licenses, including undocumented students.

World briefs

Authorities on Sunday afternoon resumed a search for remaining bodies buried in the ashes of a nursing home that burned down in L’Isle Verte, Quebec on Thursday. According to the Associated Press, authorities believe 22 bodies are still buried in the ruins, in addition to the 10 people already confirmed dead earlier that week.

Organizations on campus are working to help the University community navigate the new health care system. El Centro de la Raza, Footprints Ministry, Inc., Lobos Unidos, Centro Sávila and other organizations hosted a workshop Thursday to help the students and staff understand the Affordable Care Act and register for healthcare plans.

Benjamin Franklin once said that the only certainties in life are death and taxes. An addition to that should probably be legislation. Tuesday marked the beginning of the 2014 New Mexico Legislative Session, which will last until Feb. 20.

Williams takes ASUNM position

For Associated Students of the University of New Mexico Sen. Rachel Williams, the third semester’s the charm. The ASUNM Senate elected Williams as the student government’s president pro-tempore Wednesday night. The president pro-tempore is the third-highest position in the organization after the president and the vice president.

A Student Fee Review Board forum Wednesday night focused primarily on child care at UNM. About half a dozen of the 30 people who participated came up to voice their support for the UNM Children’s Campus for Early Care and Education.

On Jan. 13, a UNMPD officer was dispatched to the Cornell Parking Structure to investigate graffiti. Upon arrival, the officer met with a female witness who told him that the suspects used chalk to scribble the graffiti, which stated “Money is not real” and “you watch the wind blow but little do you know,”

A fraternity at Arizona State University has been suspended after members planned an offensive party that was “Martin Luther King Jr.-themed,” the Los Angeles Times reported. Photos posted during the weekend showed students dressed in baggy basketball jerseys, loose pants and baseball caps while drinking out of watermelon cups.

Flu season called ‘average’

Out of 43 cases of the flu found at UNM Hospital so far this flu season, more than half have been confirmed as swine flu. Dr. Meghan Brett, the leading epidemiologist at the hospital, said 81 percent of the cases reported from late fall to early spring were caused by the H1N1 virus.

UNM signing program gains accreditation

The Signed Language Interpretation Program at UNM has received a 10-year accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Interpreter Education. Rebekah Miller, an SLI program applicant, said this achievement is the product of work by both the faculty and the students of the SLI program.

“Joint” Resolution [10]

A bid to make marijuana legal will begin as the New Mexico Legislature opens this week. State Joint Resolution 10 would amend the state constitution to make the sale, consumption and growth of pot legal, said Sen. Jerry Ortiz y Pino, who sponsored the proposal.

Lottery funds at risk this semester

The upcoming state legislative session may determine how much some UNM students pay for school this semester. According to an email sent out by the UNM Financial Aid Office, the New Mexico Higher Education Department believes “current available funds for the Legislative Lottery Scholarship may be insufficient to cover the spring 2014 semester.”

Scholars allowed access to labs

An agreement signed by UNM last week will reduce the red tape between the University and Sandia National Laboratories. University and Sandia administrators on Friday signed the Inter-Institutional Visitor Agreement, which will allow UNM faculty members and certain graduate students to conduct experiments and research while on the national laboratory’s property.

As the spring semester kicks off, the New Mexico State Legislature will have to confront the issue of the Lottery Scholarship, which they postponed from last year’s legislative session. El Centro leader faces contention

Despite an internal fiasco last month, the new director of UNM’s El Centro de la Raza is revving up for the spring semester. Rosa Isela Cervantes, who had her first day in office Jan. 6, said that despite complaints against her appointment from some members of the El Centro community late last year, she is still excited for the semester to begin.

Superior instructors sought

The governor has proposed initiatives that would grant millions to higher education institutions in the state. At a press conference last month, Gov. Susana Martinez announced proposals that include appropriating $7.5 million to the higher education endowment fund for New Mexico universities.
