A UNM alumna has announced that she will make a ballot bid in 2014’s state elections. Democrat Debra Haaland said at a press conference in early December that she intends to run for her party’s nomination for lieutenant governor of New Mexico.

Bush fire extinguished near George Pearl Hall

The Albuquerque Fire Department responded to a “bush fire” in the area in front of George Pearl Hall late Friday afternoon. AFD public information officer Melissa Romero said authorities, who arrived at the scene at about 4:30 p.m., were able to contain the petite blaze in about 15 minutes. State Supreme Court approve same-sex marriage

New Mexico became the 17th state in the nation to allow same-sex marriages on Thursday. After months of deliberation, the state Supreme Court ruled unanimously that the state government “is constitutionally required to allow same-gender couples to marry and must extend to them the rights, protections and responsibilities that derive from civil marriage under New Mexico law.”

Charter school presents award to regents

A charter school associated with UNM presented University regents with a national award on Tuesday. Kathy Sandoval-Snider, director of the Albuquerque Institute for Math and Science (AIMS) at UNM, presented the Blue Ribbon Shield award to the UNM Board of Regents at a meeting.

UNM taking steps to ensure students graduate on time

UNM officials are working to help students graduate on time, while saving the University money. University Provost Chaouki Abdallah said it would cost the University about $50,000 to graduate a student who takes the minimum 128 total credit hours within four years. But for a student who graduates after six years, it costs UNM about $91,000 to produce a degree.

HSC divisions to hit financial goals

Four months into fiscal year 2014, UNM’s consolidated Health Sciences Center divisions have earned $4 million dollars more than they spent, combined. According to a report presented by HSC administrators in a UNM Board of Hospital Directors meeting on Friday, HSC’s divisions brought in a total of about $520 million by the end of October

Regent runs for state rep

A UNM regent has decided to make a bid for a State House of Representatives seat in 2014. According to the Albuquerque Journal, UNM Regent Conrad James announced Monday that he has decided to run for the House District 24 seat next year.

GPSA will lobby for SEED Act

UNM’s Graduate and Professional Student Association Lobby Committee is working on how best to brand their bill, the SEED Act, in order to garner legislative support. The goal of the Statewide Entrepreneurial Economic Development Act is to create an appropriation for investments on behalf of the state by using a portion of state funding.

Garcia wants to return to campus

For one former UNM president, reinstatement “would be a wonderful holiday gift.” F. Chris Garcia, who faced charges of promoting prostitution in 2011, said that although he is not yet planning to file a formal letter of reinstatement to the University any time soon, he expects UNM to restore all his privileges on campus as a faculty member. “In fact, this was supposed to be a temporary situation,” he said. “The suspension should be short-term.

Court stops required flu shots

UNM Hospital employees will not have to receive mandatory flu shots — for now. On Tuesday, the Second District Judicial Court granted a temporary stay of disciplinary action with regard to employees’ complaint about UNMH’s implementation of mandatory flu shots.

Regents to probe Innovate ABQ

Innovate ABQ, already more than one year in the making, might take a bigger step forward by the end of this week. UNM’s Board of Regents will hold a meeting from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Friday in Scholes Hall’s Roberts Room. The board will conduct an “Innovate ABQ Examination,” which will include looking at the economics of the project

A student was shot outside an Orlando-area high school after a fight broke out near a bus stop on Wednesday, according to Reuters. The wounded student was alert and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

On November 25, UNMPD officers were dispatched to the Anderson School of Management upon a report of a suspicious-looking man loitering in the building. According to the caller, the man had been loitering in and around the building off and on for about a week. Though the man identified himself by another name, a responding officer recognized the man

Bomb threat disrupts classes, events

For at least the third time this calendar year, an on-campus bomb threat that shook up the University turned out to be a hoax. UNM Police Department public information officer Lieutenant Tim Stump responded to the bomb threat early Tuesday morning immediately after UNMPD received an anonymous call warning of potential blasts.

‘Nutcracker’ production cancelled due to scare

Tuesday’s performance of “The Nutcracker” at Popejoy Hall by the New Mexico Ballet Company was cancelled due to a bomb threat early that morning. Emily Fine, executive director of the New Mexico Ballet Company, said her dancers were minutes away from warming up for their production of the Nutcracker in the building when they were evacuated.

Innovate ABQ draws federal funds to NM

Innovate ABQ gathered more funds to support itself last week. According to a news release, the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration awarded a $1.5 million grant to UNM’s Science and Technology Corporation (STC), the University department leading the Innovate ABQ effort.

UPDATE: Nothing suspicious found after bomb threat investigation

At about 10:15 a.m., UNMPD Operations Lieutenant Trace Peck said APD bomb squad officials cleared inspection of the Popejoy, Ortega and Mitchell Halls. Peck said three teams of bomb squad officials entered each building with one sniffing dog each. None found anything suspicious in any of the structures, he said. UNMPD public information officer Tim Stump said classes will resume in the buildings at 11 a.m.

A UNM professor aims to inspire students and faculty to study in central Europe. The Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (German Academic Exchange Service) selected Angela Wandinger-Ness, a UNM professor of pathology, as a research ambassador to Germany.

On Wednesday night, a few UNM students will celebrate their identities through art. 81.7% want campus bike share program

Students have signaled interest in starting a bike-share program on campus. According to the results of a recent bike-share survey conducted by ASUNM’s Green Fund Committee earlier this semester, 81.7 percent of respondents said they would like to see such a program on campus. 18.3 percent said they wouldn’t.
