Duck Pond turtles baffle officials, charm students

Shelled critters have invaded the Duck Pond and questions remain as to where they came from. Turtles have arrived in the Duck Pond to stay, said Mary Vosevich, director of UNM’s Physical Plant Department, which is in charge of maintenance of the pond.

UNM Crime Briefs

On Aug. 31, a UNMPD officer observed a man lying on a grassy patch near Oñate Hall, according to a police report. The officer suspected the man of stealing from Johnson Center, and police say they had been searching for the suspect of that crime for that entire day.

Committee made smoking zones, vanished

While UNM’s website still lists 12 designated smoking areas on campus, enforcement of the policy has gone null. Robert Burford, student conduct officer at the office of the dean of students, said a nonsmoking committee “that was formed in the past” created the zones to reduce smoking on campus.

$25K prize for business plans

For the ninth year in a row, business-minded UNM students can win up to $25,000 through a campus competition. Students can now register for the annual UNM Business Plan Competition organized by the Anderson School of Management.

PETA branch promotes veganism

Fake chicken corpses rested atop one another in a bin inside a tent near the Student Union Building. Posters of farm animals doused in mud and blood lined the walls, while a baby pig squealed in a documentary playing on a large screen.

Lobo Spotlight: Briana Leigh Morfin

When Briana Leigh Morfin was 5 years old, she remembers having her eye drawn to a sparkling crown worn by a homecoming queen at a parade. For a brief moment, the homecoming queen made eye contact with Morfin and waved, leaving Morfin with a feeling of special recognition.

A new study reports that employers steal wages from Mexican immigrants in New Mexico. According to the Mexican Immigrants and Wage Theft in New Mexico study, close to 30 percent of immigrants in the state report being the victims of wage theft.

A new campus council aims to make UNM a more tolerant place for everybody. UNM President Robert Frank said the Civil Campus Council, a campus initiative that he spearheaded, seeks to create a more comfortable atmosphere where the University community can freely exchange ideas.
