UNM works to reduce health insurance costs

With no national health care plan in America’s immediate future, the Student Health and Counseling Center is working to reduce insurance costs for students. The UNM Student Health Insurance Committee met Tuesday to discuss how to make health insurance affordable with benefits. Beverly Kloeppel, Student Health Center director, said students need health insurance because health care is expensive without it.

Senator: Cut top 20 highest salaries

State Sen. Eric Griego is taking time from his hectic schedule to send a message to UNM President David Schmidly: “In a bad economy where we’re asking students to pay more tuition, how do you justify two or three hundred thousand dollar salaries for 20 folks?” Griego introduced “Good Fiscal Judgment for UNM Salaries” to be voted on by the New Mexico Legislature.

University adjusts to fit more students

Student enrollment increased 7.3 percent for the 2010 spring semester over last year, according to the Division of Enrollment Management.  Total student enrollment at UNM is now 26,148.

Peace prize open for nominations to UNM community

UNM community members who feel they’ve made the world a more peaceful place should consider nominating themselves for the Paul Ré Peace Prize. Candidates must be UNM students, faculty, staff members or retirees, and their work should promote or demonstrate their commitment to 
inner and global serenity, Ré said. “Peace is just a kind of health … a mental and emotional and spiritual health.

Daily Lobo: How many classes are you taking? Robert Moya: I’m only taking two right now. DL: What are they? RM: I’m taking an art studio class and an art history class. DL: Why are you taking them? RM: I was planning on pursuing an undergraduate degree in architecture, but I decided to go with undergraduate art and pursue a master’s in architecture later on. DL: So have you just started? RM: No, I’ve been sort of going to UNM on and off for three years or so.

University lobbies at Capitol for UNM Day

SANTA FE — New Mexico legislators were greeted Monday with a visit from several University departments and organizations for UNM Day. Fearing harsh budget cuts, the University put on its first-ever presentation to exemplify the value of the work done and opportunities provided at UNM.

Book commemorates 60 years of law

It has been 60 years since the first class of UNM School of Law students graduated. To celebrate, the school is creating a colorful book recognizing 60 special people, accomplishments or legislation, named 60 for 60. “It’s more than just a book,” School of Law archivist David Myers said.

Buying between the lines

Starting a new chapter each semester doesn’t have to be so expensive. Representatives from Samees’s Textbooks said they have been selling UNM textbooks for less than the UNM Bookstore since 2008. Students from CNM and UNM have bought books from Samees’s Textbookssaid Brian Yu, Samees’s Textbooks manager, but he refused to say how much his sales have increased.

GPSA urges participation in Athletics election

Graduate and professional students have the next four days to share their opinions about the UNM Athletics administration. The GPSA decided in late-December to have a “no-confidence” vote in Athletics Director Paul Krebs and his handling of the Sept.

New editor encourages openness, originality

Being bitten by a viper in Barcelona over the summer left Eva Dameron with a 30 percent chance to live. If she can handle that, she can handle being the new editor-in-chief of the Daily Lobo. She showed up on the first day in her bathrobe to encourage a fun and comfortable working environment. “I didn’t want to worry too much on my first day, so my bathrobe is to remind me to not panic and that everything will work out,” she said. The Publications Board appointed Dameron as editor-in-chief Friday.

Break-ins raise issue of records' security

Two break-ins in a month at the Student Support and Success Center resulted in thousands of dollars in damage, and the alleged thieves had access to confidential student information. Kathleen Sena, the University registrar, said academic transcripts and other documents containing sensitive student information could potentially have been left on the printer and in open bins in their printer room, which was visited by thieves during a break-in Dec.
