ASUNM: Athletics is worth the money

In a twist away from the graduate students’ special election, the ASUNM Senate resolved nearly the opposite of everything the graduate student body voted on pertaining to athletics. In a 19-0 decision Wednesday, the undergraduate student Senate voted to support student athletes, Athletics Director Paul Krebs and the department as a whole.

Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry is negotiating the terms of a contract with the UNM Institute for Social Research to test whether the cameras actually make Albuquerque’s streets safer. One ASUNM senator is proposing a bill that would limit the veto power the Board of Regents has over the ASUNM constitution. The catch? The Board of Regents must willingly vote away their power if the amendment is to pass.

The UNM community donated a record amount to United Way this year. The fundraising campaign began last semester and lasted until early this semester, when the UNM community exceeded its goal of $1 million by raising $1,010,604.

Santa Ana evacuated after early-morning fire

First-floor residents of Santa Ana Hall awoke at 4 a.m. Tuesday to screaming fire alarms and billowing smoke. A bulletin board on the east end of the first floor caught on fire, according to UNMPD spokesman Robert Haarhues.

MyUNM portal to go down for upgrades

If you find yourself unable to log into MyUNM this weekend, don’t panic. The MyUNM portal is undergoing an internal update in preparation for a later Banner upgrade, said Vanessa Baca, IT communication specialist. “We are getting a new version of MyUNM in order for it to work in compliance with the new upgraded version of Banner 8,” she said.

Projected allocations for research grants

UNM will receive more than $37 million in federal stimulus funding for research initiatives. The money, which came from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, is split between main campus and the Health Sciences Center.

SFRB cuts fees from Athletics 2.2%

After contentious debate, the Student Fee Review Board decided to slightly cut Athletics funding. According to the unofficial SFRB worksheet, 2.2 percent of last year’s funding is being cut — more than $33,000, or $2.32 per full-time student.

16-hour meeting held over $10 student fee hike

The Student Fee Review Board has recommended raising student fees by a little over $10 a year for full-time students. After more than 16 hours holed up in a basement classroom in George Pearl Hall this weekend, the Board emphasized fiscal responsibility when considering requests totaling more than $11 million in hopes of minimizing, and even eliminating, a student fee increase. Every program requesting student fees asked for increased funding over last year — a total requested increase of $1.5 million — and four groups asked for almost $200,000 in new money.

Beloved nudist forced to move

Don Schrader’s apartment is every bit as unique as he is. The 12-by-14-foot apartment, which he will vacate at the end of February, displays Schrader’s history in wall-to-ceiling decoration of pictures from his life, notes on his methodologies, cards from friends and published letters to the Weekly Alibi. The apartment complex where Schrader lives, on Silver Avenue, is being remodeled and sold by the owners.
