Student job fair has low turnout

Despite the 15 booths advertising employment opportunities and 12 booths representing departments in the University, SUB Ballroom B was mostly empty on Monday. Five students walked around the room, bouncing from booth to booth with their résumés in hand, in search of a summer job.

Study: Female professors earn less than males

Today is national Equal Pay Day, and female professors at UNM are still paid less than their male counterparts. According to a University-wide study accepted for publication on Sunday, female professors at UNM earn 3 percent less than male professors, even after controlling productivity variables such as maternity leave, education and discipline.

Group gets food to needy families

PB&J Family Services collaborated with the Albuquerque business community Monday to provide Crock-pots full of food to 100 hungry families. PB&J Family Services is a local organization that provides case management, counseling, parenting classes and health care to needy families.

Symposium to highlight ethics in research

Today's Research Ethics Symposium will highlight the most trying questions plaguing labs around the world. "Fostering Integrity in Research" is being held today from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the auditorium at the Centennial Engineering Center. William Gannon, who works in the Office of the Vice President for Research and coordinated the symposium, said President David Schmidly has increased UNM's focus on research integrity during his time at UNM.

A protest overlooked

A rally to draw attention to the plight of child soldiers in Africa went awry this weekend as protesters waited in vain for someone to recognize their cause. The Invisible Children organization held its third international awareness event, the Rescue, at Tiguex Park near Old Town on Saturday.

Students bring Darfur into view

Eight student organizations are teaming up today to educate students on human injustices in Darfur. The UNM community is invited to participate in Darfur Awareness Day from noon to 3 p.m. in Cornell Mall. Junior Katrice Grant, who helped organize the event, said the genocide in Darfur has been going on since 2003.

Housing summit preaches prudence in homebuying

It might not seem like the right time to think about getting into the housing market, but it's never too soon to learn to be a prudent home buyer. Angela Muxworthy said first-time homeowners should learn about buying a home before they make their purchase.

Students get courtroom experience in mock trial

"It is your duty to determine the facts. Neither sympathy nor prejudice should influence you." Thus spoke Judge James Browning on Saturday as he read to his courtroom and jury. But Browning was not presiding over a real trial. UNM School of Law students met at the Second Judicial County Courthouse to participate in a mock trial as part of a class titled Advanced Evidence and Trial Practice.

Two teams of UNM engineering students won an international competition this month by designing efficient and cost-effective water treatment processes. The teams estimated that they spent more than 100 hours since November working on their projects for the Waste Environment Research Consortium Environmental Design Competition.

Palestinian journalist to speak Saturday

Palestinian journalist Ziad Abbas will speak in Albuquerque on Saturday to ask New Mexicans to stop supporting occupation in the Middle East. "We would like to raise awareness about what is going on in the Middle East and especially in Palestine, because we think that often Americans are not aware because the media here does not cover what is happening on the ground," Abbas said.

April 11 A UNM police officer was dispatched to Sigma Alpha Epsilon, at 1811 Mesa Vista Dr. N.E., in response to vandalism. Two residents said a brick with two smoke bombs was thrown through a window, breaking the glass and filling the house with smoke. Six hours later, a fire extinguisher was thrown through the same window.

Students, lab employees debate nuclear energy

About 45 students gathered at the SUB on Wednesday to continue the long-standing debate over the benefits and pitfalls of nuclear energy. The UNM College Republicans brought a Sandia National Labs employee to the SUB to speak to curious students about the future of nuclear energy.
