Paramount film takes center stage on campus

The UNM campus played host to a number of popular names in the film industry last week as filming began on campus of the Paramount Pictures psychological thriller "Suspect Zero." The movie will star Aaron Eckhart, from "Erin Brokovich," Sir Ben Kingsley, who received an Academy Award for his work in "Ghandi" and Carrie-Anne Moss, who played Trinity in "The Matrix.

Regent seeks more equity in priorities

Making sure UNM recognizes underrepresented groups in legislative priorities and other projects was a heated topic for Regent Richard Toliver during the Board of Regents Finance and Facilities meeting Monday, Aug. 5. Toliver broached the subject twice during the meeting: first during the legislative request priorities for the 2002-03 fiscal year, and then again before a series of motions to select four architects for UNM building projects.

UNM professor dies from gunshot wound

Staff Report Former UNM English professor Louis Owens died Thursday, July 27, from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest, said Albuquerque Sunport spokeswoman Maggie Santiago. Owens was found in his car at the Sunport parking lot with a pistol and a note asking that his wife be notified.

UNM's final budget reaches $1.3 billion

Two weeks after UNM's new fiscal year began, the Board of Regents approved final details of the University's budget. The figures were stuck in legislative limbo until a special session was called this summer to settle a statewide budget standoff. The final tally left UNM with $1.

Fired professor files suit against UNM

A former UNM professor has filed a lawsuit against the University and three medical school employees alleging discrimination and harassment, as well as being retaliated against for failing students whom she caught cheating on a final examination. Cynthia Lopez, who taught courses in the Master of Health program, filed the lawsuit Thursday in Bernalillo County District Court.

UNM student stabbed, killed at local party

Staff Report UNM student Andres Arguello was stabbed to death Saturday at a party in the University area. Cousins Christopher Jaramillo and Valentino Jaramillo are being held in relation to the crimes, according the Albuquerque Police Department. Valentino Jaramillo is accused of stabbing Arguello in the chest.

Record year for lottery scholarships

Because of record sales and profits set by the New Mexico Lottery Authority this year, Lance Ross, spokesman for the authority, said that the future of the Lottery Scholarship has been ensured for a "long time." "Every dollar of net revenue and profit helps ensure the longevity of the program," Ross said.

Students welcomed to campus

UNM will sponsor a record number of new international students this fall semester. And, in an attempt to make those new students feel welcome, University President F. Chris Garcia played host during an ice cream social at University House. "It makes me feel special," said Loreto Catoira, a first-year doctoral student from Spain.

U.S. elitism product of commerce

Yankees are classist pig-dogs: You are sitting in a Filipino Karaoke/Strip-Bar in one of the more sketchy sections of downtown Manila. You sip a San Miguel and watch a 4'10" pinoy baritone belt out "One Sweet Day" with the accompaniment of a half-naked stripper he is paying 250 pesos an hour to sing with him - roughly five US dollars. He is really getting into it and is noticeably drunk. The stripper, meanwhile, sings the Mariah Carey part with forced and false emotion. She is merely doing her job.

UNM Hospital has received its first PET scan device, a state-of-the art machine that will be used for diagnostics and training in a number of health fields.
