Letter: Closure of Zia Lot causes South Lot game-day chaos

Editor, This year, I was basically forced to park in South Lot. I hate parking in this lot. Parking there adds an extra 10 minutes to my commute, plus another couple of minutes for the shuttle ride. Last year, I parked in G Lot and absolutely loved it. I was planning on buying a permit for that lot again this year but was not allowed.

Letter: Frats shouldn't brush off crimes as 'a few problems'

Editor, I am writing in response to the article by Caleb Fort about fraternities in Wednesday's Daily Lobo. In this article, one of the people interviewed, Bryan Deshayes, explained how great for him it was to join a fraternity. After this explanation, Deshayes described two cases of rape, the hazing of a blind student, the suspension of three fraternities and the probation of another - and there are only 11 fraternities - as "a few problems.

Letter: Politicians listen to voters, nonvoters have no voice

Editor, In response to J.P. Farish and Richard Doerfler's anti-voting letters in Friday's Daily Lobo, I must note that this seems to be a disturbing trend. Some intelligent, politically conscious people seem to be under the impression that by choosing not to vote, instead of just neglecting to do, they have more of a voice in the government than a citizen of a dictatorship.

Letter: Racist, homophobic actions tear down fraternity facade

Editor, I am writing in response to Ronnie Garcia's letter in Thursday's Daily Lobo. I think Garcia misunderstands why some of us don't want fraternities on our campus. It is not that the University is forcing fraternities off campus because of stereotypes that students or administrators may believe, but instead, because of the stereotypes that fraternity members have about society - that is, their ideas of what it is to be masculine and heterosexual.

Letter: Terror detainee bill ignores U.S. tradition of rule of law

Editor, Attempting to defend the terror detainee bill signed by President Bush on Tuesday, Sen. John McCain, who is endorsing Rep. Heather Wilson in her race against Attorney General Patricia Madrid, admitted the CIA likely violated procedures related to torture, outlawed by this bill.

Letter: Pig-headed parties are not worthy of any votes

Editor, I am writing in response to Victor B. Murthy's letter in Wednesday's Daily Lobo. I find his calling nonvoting "regressive and apathetic" quite saddening. I suppose if Murthy was in Boston during the late 1700s, he would be ranting against the patriotic men throwing tea into the sea and demanding more time to work with the corrupt British government at the time.

Letter: Bush's economic polices got nothing on Clinton

Editor, Republicans claim the economy is operating on overdrive, and the proof they use to justify this absurd claim is the Dow Jones industrial average, which is at record highs. Why don't the Democrats respond and tell Americans the truth about the incompetent economic policies of President Bush and his cadre? The Bush administration is not concerned with the prosperity of any Americans other than itself and those that donate money to preserve its power.

Letter: 'South Park' should tease believers of government

Editor, When I read Joe Buffaloe's column about the latest "South Park" episode, which poked fun at the 9/11 Truth Movement, I had to laugh. There is nothing even close to conservatism being practiced anywhere in the political spectrum in this country. The Republicans Buffaloe referred to are radical extremists whose policies can in no way be considered conservative.

Letter: Anti-abortion group to use Smith Plaza as exhibit site

Editor, The Dean of Students Office is advising the campus community and campus visitors that Justice For All, an anti-abortion organization, will have an outdoor exhibit that includes graphic photographs on Smith Plaza, south of Zimmerman Library, Monday through Wednesday.

Letter: Nonvoters know their vote won't change the system

Editor, Deanna Delgado courageously put an unpopular view in clear sight of predictable criticism. A no-vote is obviously a vote against the state of American politics. The political climate is fraught, corruption is endemic and the will of industry has been accommodated to an obscene degree.

Letter: Right to smoke infringes on others' right to clean air

Editor, In response to Deadra Wright's letter in Tuesday's Daily Lobo, what Constitution is she reading? Nowhere in the U.S. Constitution does it grant or imply a person's right to smoke. Wright may have the right to buy cigarettes, but the right to smoke them publicly is a gray area.

Letter: Most, but not all Christians criticize gay community

Editor, I am writing in response to Robert Ortiz's letter in Tuesday's Daily Lobo. I agree with Ortiz that it is not simply Christianity that holds negative views toward homosexuality, but I disagree with just about everything else he said. The reason that David Gonzalez primarily targeted Christians in his letter on Monday is because the greatest opposition toward the gay community comes from the Christian community.

Letter: UNM allows Greek system to be negatively portrayed

Editor, I am writing in response to the article about the Greeks published in Wednesday's Daily Lobo. I think it would be nice to show the good things that fraternities and sororities do among the UNM and Albuquerque communities, but in the real world, that is not newsworthy.

Letter: Using South Lot shuttle unnecessary; try walking

Editor, In Tuesday's issue of the Daily Lobo, Lucia Fronterotta took issue with UNM's decision to close Zia Lot and Parking and Transportation Services' justification for doing so. In objecting to the decision, Fronterotta alluded to several common misconceptions about UNM's shuttle system.

Letter: Shameless love a strong foundation for happiness

Editor, I treasure mutually passionate romance with a man, but I will not for any man on earth surrender or compromise my war tax refusal, my living simply, my having no car, my all-raw vegan food, my urine therapy, my walking and vigorous daily exercise, my freedom to be naked and my strong public stands of conscience.

Column: Don't talk trash, talk business

The problem with the political campaign system is that nothing of substance is ever discussed. Sure, candidates mention Iraq, support family values and promote their own integrity, but what about the issues that affect citizen's day-to-day lives?

Letter: Many reasons to vote despite bad candidates

Editor, Deanna Delgado's letter in Monday's Daily Lobo missed the point. Nonvoters do not accomplish more than voters. The reason people get so annoyed with nonvoters is that not voting accomplishes nothing. Sure, the Democrats and the Republicans suck. Alternatives? The Democrats effectively painted the Green Party as a spoiler to maintain their market share of the voters, and the Republicans offered money to the Green Party, effectively backing up the Democratic claim that the Green Party was tied to Republicans.

Letter: Nonvoters do not fight the system effectively

Editor, I am writing in response to Deanna Delgado's letter in Monday's Daily Lobo about the volunteer who asked her boyfriend if he wanted to register to vote. While I agree that the volunteer's comment was unprofessional, I don't think it was completely unfounded.
