LETTER: U.S. foreign policy not worth defending

Editor, Saturday, millions of people around the globe marched against a U.S. war on Iraq, including 5-8,000 in Santa Fe. I was there and it was a great event. I write today out of concern that many Americans are still unfamiliar with the extent of the global opposition to U.

LETTER: War on terrorism futile

Editor, Are any readers of this paper old enough to remember the war on poverty? It was a Johnson administration program in the '60s that got sidetracked by Vietnam. That's the "war" in Vietnam, which was a real war, unlike the "war" on poverty, which was a biggish social program supposed to do away with unemployment and homelessness and the like.

EDITORIAL: Women’s rights up in air with Bush’s lead

Women, raise your hands if you would keep going to an obstetrician-gynecologist who prescribed “prayer” and specific “Scripture readings” for your pre-menstrual syndrome symptoms. If you believe prayer will eradicate your menstrual cramps, then perhaps it would be best if you stop reading right now.

COLUMN: War barters with U.S. values

by Richard M. Berthold Daily Lobo Columnist War is a horrible affair, a fact that seems to escape many Americans. Not surprisingly, the single senior official in the Bush administration who has actually been in conflict, Colin Powell, was the only one to resist our rush to war, though it appears that party loyalty has triumphed over principles.

LETTER: U.S. violating rights of Middle Eastern citizens

Editor, In just over one week, I may be facing a nightmare. My partner will have to go register with the INS because this country has decided to violate his civil rights. Just because he happens to be from Pakistan. Now, if that particular agent he sees happens to be having a bad day, he could very well likely be deported back to Pakistan.

LETTER: People who eat meat deprive others of food

Editor, If we treat animals like animals, can we treat hypocrites like hypocrites? After reading Eric Howerton's column, I sort of picture him as a savage, tearing meat from a bone with his teeth, with blood running down his chin, dressed in furs, and petting his dog now and again.

LETTER: Bush, Hussein expend lives

Editor, I hope I am not the only person who is offended by George Bush's self-righteous indignation when he asserts that Saddam Hussein is using the people of Iraq as human shields -- treating them as expendable. This is an interesting statement coming from the spokesperson of a regime that is directly responsible for the deaths of over a half million Iraqi civilians, most of whom are children, resulting from the sanctions placed upon Iraq over ten years ago.

LETTER: Latin humor uses same stereotypes

Editor, On Jan. 28, Daily Lobo columnist Margarita Ortega y Gomez wrote that the daily comic strip "La Cucaracha," which portrays some of its Latino characters as immature, dishonest, stupid and possessing other negative cultural stereotypes, is "vital for everyone" and approvingly quotes the author's statement that the strip is "thought-provoking satire.

COLUMN: Jackson cries for attention

by Scott Darnell Daily Lobo Columnist More than 20 million people watched Michael Jackson's recent interview on ABC; it was a monstrous hit in England and the United States and such an event, centered around such an unusual person begs many questions, the most principle of which is: why did Jackson partake in the interview in the first place? It seems there are two possibilities for why Jackson would have agreed to such an intrusive interview.

LETTER: UNM should offer Chicana/o Studies

Editor, While I find the editorial debates surrounding Chicana/o Studies intriguing, at the same time I find them quite disturbing. In the past week, both Chicana/o and non-Chicana/o students, alumni and community members have exerted pressures on the University to rework the internal and external faults of Chicana/o Studies and the University's responsibility to Chicana/o students.

COLUMN: Treat animals like animals

I eat meat. I love stripping meat from rib bones with my bare hands as I pay homage to my australopithecine ancestors by boycotting cutlery. I love sushi, stuffing myself full of salmon sashimi and unagi until I look like a fully inflated blowfish. And I occasionally love a rubbery seven-cow composite frankfurter stuffed in a pasty white bun and slathered with gelatinous canned chili.

LETTER: Wealthy Americans' fear based on greed

Editor, I've been reading and hearing a lot lately about fear. Americans, we are told, should be afraid of another terrorist attack. Britons, the media say, should be afraid of a similar attack. The Koreans are afraid of an American pre-emptive strike. The Israelis are afraid of a film about the Jenin refugee camp and have banned it.

COLUMN: Cockfights heartless torture

by Richard "Bugman" Fagerlund Daily Lobo Columnist Cockfighting in New Mexico is alive and well. Cockfighting died in committee so we are stuck with this so-called sport for another year at least unless a miracle happens. Five members of the senate committee decided that animal cruelty in New Mexico is alive and well and we should continue it because it is a "tradition.
