Men’s soccer still kicking at UNM through club team

Many were dismayed in July 2018 after it was announced that the University of New Mexico’s nationally competitive collegiate soccer team was cut by the Board of Regents. However, that doesn’t mean that UNM’s legacy of men’s soccer has died out. After having come back from their fall regional tournament where they competed with nationally ranked teams, UNM men’s club soccer keeps the community and competitive spirit alive on campus.

Women’s Soccer: Lobos lose in semifinals shootout, fall in Mountain West tournament

The University of New Mexico Lobos faced the San José State Spartans in the Mountain West Conference semifinals on Wednesday, Nov. 2. The score ended in 0-0 after overtime, with the Lobos eventually losing in a shootout 4-2. The Lobos had been the reigning conference champions for the past two seasons. While losing in a shootout is a disappointing way to end the season, the Lobos did play well in their last game; there were multiple shots where mere inches would have completely changed the outcome of the match.

Women’s Basketball: Lobos defeat West Texas A&M in exhibition game

The University of New Mexico women’s basketball team played the West Texas A&M University Lady Buffs in their opening exhibition match, walking away with a 84-75 victory. The Lady Buffs are a Division II athletics university; last season, they finished in the Elite Eight of the Division II women’s basketball tournament. The team had a good showing with four starters scoring 14 or more. LaTascya Duff had 17 points and her twin sister LaTora Duff had a team high nine assists; she also had two steals and a block. Paula Reus had eight rebounds to lead the Lobos.

Men’s Basketball: Men’s team looks promising in exhibition game

The University of New Mexico Lobo men’s basketball team defeated the Colorado State University Pueblo Thunderwolves 85-52 in their exhibition match on Saturday, Oct. 29. The team looked strong with their new lineup that looks to fix some of the issues that plagued them last season. Jaelen House led the Lobos in scoring with 20 points; he also had three assists along with a steal and only played for 16 minutes. Jamal Mashburn Jr. got the team off to a hot start and set the tone for the game; he had 11 points.

Volleyball: UNM wins 3-0 against Nevada during Pink Game

The University of New Mexico volleyball team won 3-0 against the University of Nevada, Reno Wolf Pack on Thursday, Oct. 27. The match was also their “Pink Game” of the season for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  The match marked the Lobo’s third win in a row after three tough losses. They also took revenge against Nevada after losing 3-2 in an away game on Oct. 15. “Our goal is to be better…. We're going to be better the second time that we play a team,” head coach Jon Newman-Gonchar said. “And so that's just where we're at right now.”

Football: UNM dominated by Fresno State 41-9 in homecoming game

The University of New Mexico’s football team played the California State University, Fresno Bulldogs for their homecoming game and lost 41-9. The Lobos are now on a five-game losing streak with a 2-6 overall record and have yet to win a conference game. A win would have kept the dream of a bowl game alive for at least three more weeks, but now UNM will have to win their last four games in a row to end with a 6-6 record. With the win, Fresno State now has a 2-1 record in conference play. They are tied for first in their division and will be competing for a spot at the Mountain West championship game.

UNM volleyball battles San Diego State to win 3-1

The University of New Mexico’s volleyball team faced the San Diego State University Aztecs, resulting in 3-1 a win. Going into the night, the two teams had the same record of 2-6 in conference matches — both teams looked to put an end to their losing streak. The Lobos ended their three-game losing streak and the Aztecs continue on their now six-game streak. The sets were hard fought with a total of 24 ties and 11 lead changes across four sets. UNM won despite San Diego leading them in total attacks, kills, digs and blocks. The win advances UNM to an overall record of 12-7.

PREVIEW: Improvement imminent for men’s basketball

In Richard Pitino’s first year as the head coach of the University of New Mexico men’s basketball team, the Lobos finished with an overall record of 13-19 — an improvement from the 2020-21 season where the Lobos only won six games. With significant players transferring to UNM and some exciting freshmen recruits, men’s basketball looks to expand on the success of last season.

Women’s soccer match ends in tie

The University of New Mexico women’s soccer team played the San Jose State University Spartans on Sunday, Oct 9, ending in a tie. The Lobos have a record of 4-3-6 and are 2-1-2 in conference play, which makes them tied for third in the Mountain West conference. It was a frustrating game for the Lobos, as they had six shots hit the goal post; had they gone in, they could have easily flipped the outcome of the match. The Lobos put up 20 shot attempts whereas the Spartans only had 11 —  only three were credited as shots on the goal, though.

UNM football drops early lead to Wyoming, loses 27-14

The University of New Mexico football team lost to the University of Wyoming Cowboys on Saturday, Oct 8. The Lobos looked to repeat last year’s 14-3 upset win but ultimately fell short with the Cowboys winning 27-14. Receivers Luke Wysong and Geordon Porter, and running backs Christian Washington and Sherod White were all out for noninjury reasons. Their presence was missed with quarterback Miles Kendrick taking on a larger offensive load, racking up 72 rushing yards — the most on the team. Andrew Erickson had the most receiving yards with 46 but only had two catches.

UNM volleyball suffers total loss against UNLV

The University of New Mexico volleyball team lost 3-0 against The University of Nevada, Las Vegas on Thursday, Oct. 6. The game marked the fourth loss in conference play for UNM after losing to Colorado State University on Oct.1 and the University of Wyoming on Sept. 29. Despite coming close in all three sets, UNLV did not let UNM catch a break by controlling the entire match. The first set came to an end at 25-22, marking the pace for what would be the results for the next two sets. Currently, UNLV has a 13-3 record. UNM has had a total of 11 wins and, against UNLV, they acquired their fifth loss.

OPINION: Aaron Judge has the true home run record

After an amazing season, Aaron Judge hit his 62nd home run of the year on Tuesday, Oct. 4 against the Texas Rangers, passing Roger Maris’ 61 to take the American League single-season home run record. But his 62 is seventh all-time in Major League Baseball history while the names of the three players ahead of him haunt baseball: Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire and Barry Bonds, icons of the steroid era. Now a question is being asked within baseball: which is the real home run record, Judge’s clean 62 or Bonds’ tainted 73?

UNM volleyball loses competitive match to Colorado State

The University of New Mexico volleyball team played the Colorado State University Rams on Saturday, Oct. 1. The final score of 3-1 Rams does not reflect how competitive of a match it was: the Lobos lost with a scoring margin of only -5 and had more blocks and digs than the Rams. Kaitlynn Biassou had 17.5 points to lead the team in scoring. Uxue Guereca had a double-double with 12.5 points and 12 digs. Avital Jaloba led in blocks with eight and had a hitting percentage of .538. The Rams are 11-4 on the season and are undefeated in conference play at 4-0, making them first in the Mountain West Conference.

UNM volleyball wrangled in close match with Wyoming Cowgirls

The University of New Mexico volleyball team played the University of Wyoming Cowgirls on Thursday, Sept. 29 in their third game of conference play. The game lasted all five sets with the Cowgirls ultimately winning the match 3-2. The Lobos led the Cowgirls in total points scored, but they were unable to win the match after falling 2-0 to start the match. They rallied back to force a fifth set after 10 ties and five lead changes. Kaitlynn Biassou led the team in scoring with 31 points and also had a team high 26 kills. Melissa Walden had 52 assists and 17 digs. Avital Joloba led the team in blocks with seven.

Lobos slot receiver forges new legacy

Since he was four years old, University of New Mexico sophomore and Lobos slot receiver Luke Wysong knew he wanted to play football. Playing catch with his dad in their neighborhood’s cul-de-sac would begin a lifelong obsession with the game of football. Wysong was born into a family steeped in cherry and silver: his mom and dad played volleyball and football for UNM, respectively. His two uncles also played, filling out the Lobo football family roster. After an impressive high school career, when it came to decide on college Wysong said his parents were supportive regardless of what school he chose to go to.

UNM basketball player represents Native community on a national scale

University of New Mexico freshman and guard for the Lobo women’s basketball team Natalia Chavez has signed a deal with Degree Deodorant’s “Breaking Limits Team” in just the second year of the program's existence. The team seeks to provide underrepresented athletes a platform while sharing inspiring stories. Chavez won a contest held on Degree’s Instagram and was chosen out of hundreds of athletes, according to a press release from Degree.

UNM volleyball shows resilience against NAU

The Lobos defeated the Northern Arizona University Lumberjacks 3-1, but the final score doesn’t reflect how competitive of a game it was: three of the four sets came down to the wire, but UNM still came out on top with a total of 17 ties and seven lead changes throughout the match. Outside hitter Kaitlynn Biassou had 26 points, leading UNM in scoring. Anilee Sher led the Lobos in assists with 44 on the night. Freshman Lea Zurlinden was recently awarded with the conference’s Freshman of the Week award; she backed it up by scoring 10 points and having a kill percentage of .667.

UNM football trampled by Boise State 31-14

The Lobos lost to the Boise State University Broncos during their second game of the season, putting their record at 1-1 and 0-1 in conference play. UNM’s defense was unable to fend off the Broncos for all four quarters, giving up 21 points in the second half. The Lobos were never able to get going on offense: 1-14 on third down and an almost nonexistent run game, rushing for a net 25 yards on 27 attempts. Miles Kendrick threw 9-24 but had little protection from the offensive line, getting sacked six times. Geordon Porter scored the offense’s only touchdown on a 69-yard reception.

UNM football destroys University of Maine 41-0

University of New Mexico football started the season with a big win against the University of Maine Black Bears 41-0. They had incredibly strong play and gave fans a lot to be excited about with 437 total yards. The defense only gave up 22 rushing yards and picked up three sacks. The Black Bears played in the Colonial Athletic Association last season. They ended with an overall record of 6-5 and did not participate in a bowl game. Transfer quarterback Miles Kendrick threw 14-17 with 2 touchdowns but gave up two interceptions. He had a strong connection with receiver Luke Wysong who had 51 receiving yards on the night. Linebacker Reco Hannah had 1.5 sacks and was credited with one QB hurry.

Women bring the thunder to bare knuckle fighting

New Mexico held its first-ever Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship on Aug. 27 at the Rio Rancho Events Center, with the women proving to be a much more exciting watch than the men. New Mexico's own John Dobson, Eric Dobson, Jayme Hinshaw and Will Santiago each took home a win throughout the night. The event ran for about three and a half hours and ended with quick matches during the headlining fights. Christine Ferea took out Taylor Starling in a mere 47 seconds to retain her title as flyweight champion. John Dobson took out Ryan Benoit in a mere 1:40.
