Veterans pace men in win

While the sea of fresh faces on the UNM men's basketball team were unveiled Saturday night at The Pit, it was the recognizable faces that stole the show. The quartet of returning letterman David Chiotti, Ryan Ashcraft, Javin Tindall and Mark Walters set the tone for the game and perhaps for a success-filled season.

Athletes of the Week

Julie Briody Basketball Freshman Briody led the UNM women to a 77-75 win over the USC Trojans Friday at The Pit. Briody scored a team-high 18 points, and at one point went on her own eight-point run to even the score late in the second period. Lobo Defense Football The UNM defense had a record-breaking performance in the Lobos' 26-3 win over Wyoming.

Free throws spur Lobos in season-opening win

The UNM women's basketball team spent much of the game at the free-throw line and used that to its advantage in a 77-75 victory over the USC Trojans, Friday night at The Pit. The Lobos tied a UNM record by making 33 free throws and broke a school record with 43 attempts.

Lobo srain threes on D-II Gators

In their first game of the season, the Lobo men's basketball team showed there are two ways to dominate an opponent. During the first half of their 95-42 blowout over San Francisco State University, the Lobos dumped the ball inside to sophomore forward David Chiotti, who had his way in the post.

Penalties break the Ice Wolves

The UNM Ice Wolves were defeated twice by the Red Raiders of Texas Tech in their first home games of the year this weekend at Blades Ice Arena in Rio Rancho. With both games being played late at night, the visiting Red Raiders managed to win each game by two goals.

The Lobos are going to a bowl game. All that's left to be decided is which one, and if they'll go as conference champions. The news came early this week that UNM will be invited to one of three Mountain West Conference bowls.

Student wins title for bodybuilding

UNM marketing major Aaron Links is obsessed with bodybuilding - and he's not afraid to admit it. Saturday, Links won the junior division title at the American National competition in Boston. Contrary to popular belief, there is no weight lifting at bodybuilding competitions.

Diving team gets new coach

A Lobo diver has won the 1-meter and 3-meter competitions in all four meets the team has competed in this season, and garnered eight gold medals, seven silver medals and two bronze medals. However, the team was without a coach until less than two weeks ago.

Daniel Gawronski Football Senior Gawronski led the Lobos to a 24-12 win over the Air Force Falcons Saturday in his last game at University Stadium. Gawronski finished with 14 total tackles, including nine solo. The Falcons boast the No. 3 rushing offense and average more than 300 yards a game.

The Lobos lost to the San Jose State Spartans 3-2 in a match that was highlighted not for its spectacular play, but rather for the brawl that left five players ejected from the game with red cards.

The Lobos almost shut out the nation's No. 3 rushing attack in their 24-12 win over the Air Force Falcons Saturday at University Stadium. UNM dominated from the first snap and never let up. The Falcons' only touchdown came on a 1-yard rush with just over a minute remaining in the fourth quarter.

by Phil Parker Daily Lobo In their last and toughest game of the preseason, the Lobos survived a second-half dry spell to pull out a 75-71 win over the EA Sports Southwest All-Stars. After a sharp first half in which UNM and the All-Stars routinely traded baskets, the Lobos came out stale for the start of the second.

Cross Country The UNM men's and women's cross country teams finished the season Saturday at the NCAA Mountain Region Championships in Ogden, Utah. The Lobos finished 13th in both men's and women's competitions. Senior Sarah Gonzales raced to a career-best finish with a time of 22:11 and led the women with a 30th-place finish.

by Phil Parker Daily Lobo Early in the fourth quarter of a 24-12 Lobo win over Air Force, sophomore running back DonTrell Moore rushed for 14 yards past a slew of Falcon defenders and into UNM's record books. Moore finished the game with 1,285 rushing yards this season - a new school record.
