Lobos sweep Canadian foes

Staff Report The Lobo men's basketball team got off to a flying start, going 4-0 in exhibition games played north of the border over fall break. UNM, which lost 17 straight road games last season, swept its Canadian foes, taking four exhibition games over EA Sports Vancouver All Stars, Simon Fraser, the University of Calgary and Trinity Western University.

Rebels kill Lobo hopes for new start

The UNM men's soccer team lost its conference opener to cellar-dwellers UNLV 0-2 Saturday night at the UNM Soccer Complex. It was the fourth consecutive loss for the Lobos. After losing to six nationally ranked teams, UNM was looking forward to a fresh start of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation conference.

Athletes of the Week

Gabriel Fulbright Sophomore Football Fulbright led the defense in the Lobo's 30-7 victory over the San Diego State Aztecs Saturday. Fulbright had three interceptions, and the defense forced six SDSU turnovers. Anna Reines Senior Volleyball Reines led all players with 17 kills in Friday's match against the University of Wyoming.

Turnovers costly for Aztecs as Lobos roll

Staff Report Two big factors led to the Lobos' 30-7 win at San Diego State on Saturday: Aztec turnovers and DonTrell Moore. Moore scored two touchdowns from two and three yards out. In all, he ran for 89 yards on 15 carries. Three of the Aztec's turnovers accounted for 17 Lobo points.

Preseason award honors Shetters

Junior Jenny Shetters has never played a basketball game in a UNM jersey, but she was one of only two Lobos recognized by the Mountain West Conference in last weeks' preseason picks. Shetters was chosen by MWC coaches and media as the preseason conference Newcomer of the Year.

Lobo men head to the Great White North

The UNM men's basketball team will head north of the border to Vancouver, Canada to compete in a three-day series of exhibition games over fall break. Nestled in the southwest corner of British Columbia, Vancouver is a long way from home for the youth-powered Lobos.

Athletes of the Week

Divan Coetzee Senior Tennis Coetzee upset the No. 2 player in college tennis, Bo Hodge from the University of Georgia, Friday 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the Icy Hot/ITA All American Championship. Coetzee was named to the All-MWC singles team in the spring and was invited to play in the 2003 NCAA Men's Tennis Championships in Atlanta, Ga.

Not quite a fiesta

Staff Report The UNM men's tennis team failed to defend the singles and doubles title at the Balloon Fiesta Invitational this weekend at Lobo Tennis Club. The College of Santa Fe's Gerald Bremond, seeded No. 1, won the main flight singles competition with a 6-2, 6-4 win over NMSU's Danilo Zivanovic.

Player works to beat injury

If there ever was perfect timing to sustain a serious injury, Mark Walters picked it. During individual off-season workouts in late May, the UNM freshman suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. The injury came two months after the 2002-03 regular season and doctors projected six months would be needed for a full recovery.

Men's team looks to defend titles

Staff Report The UNM men's tennis team will play for keeps at its annual Balloon Fiesta Invitational this weekend at the Lobo Tennis Club. The University of California-Riverside, Northern Arizona University, the University of Denver, the College of Santa Fe, NMSU, the New Mexico Military Institute and the Air Force Academy will be in on the action.

Staff Report Mountain West Conference preseason picks are out and the Lobo women's basketball team is expected to finish third in the conference, while the men's team is slated to finish seventh. The ranking is the result of selections by MWC coaches and media.

Men's golf struggles in Calif. tournament

Sunny Malibu, Calif. provided no rays of hope for the UNM men's golf team Monday or Tuesday. A dark cloud seemed to hang over the Lobos despite what head coach Glen Millican called windless, idyllic conditions at Pepperdine University's Club Glove Intercollegiate.

Playing in Division I college athletics is not as glamorous as it may seem. Sure, it's fun to travel and flattering to be recognized on the streets and asked to sign autographs, but these things come at a price: a tremendous amount of pressure, hard work and dedication.

Homecookin'

Senior Casey Kelly threw for 230 yards and sophomore DonTrell Moore rushed for 132 yards on 30 carries to lead the Lobos to a 34-7 win over the Utah State Aggies Saturday at University Stadium. The Lobos were pleasantly surprised by the ease of the win.

Athletes of the Week

Sean Flaherty Senior Cross Country Flaherty led the Lobo men to a top finish in this weekend's meet at San Diego. He set a personal record Saturday, finishing second in the 8K in 26:31. Flaherty's previous best was a 13th place finish last year. Kristen Winters Junior Soccer Winters allowed the Saint Mary's Gaels to score only one goal out of 24 shots on Sunday afternoon in Moraga, Calif.

Victory gives Lobos boost

If the Lobos' offense steps up its performance and the defense continues its stellar play, the team will be capable of beating anyone it faces, UNM head football coach Rocky Long said. Both of those things happened Saturday night, resulting in what Long called "the most well-rounded game of the season.

Utes walk away with win

by Tony Niklinski Daily Lobo Lobo fans packed the gym at Johnson Center Friday on "Jam Johnson" night as 1,339 supporters came to see the volleyball team play the Utah Utes. Despite the fans' support, the UNM volleyball team could not snap its 10 game losing streak, dropping three straight games to the visiting Utes 30-19, 30-21, 30-12.
