Tennis team begins season impressively

Staff Report The UNM men's tennis team started its season in Las Cruces at the Aggie Invitational this weekend. Tournament play opened on Friday at NMSU, where three Lobos went undefeated in singles competition against NMSU, Texas Tech and Northern Arizona University.

The UNM men's rugby club is coming off possibly its best season ever and is hoping to use that momentum to become a national championship contender, coach Shannon Robinson said. "We have a very special team that can really surprise some people," Robinson said.

Golf teams ready to hit the links

Aside from a bad hole here and a mental mistake there, the UNM women's golf team grabbed a credible 9th-place finish at the elite NCAA Fall Preview last weekend in Opelika, Ala. Duke University edged out host Auburn University in a playoff for the title.

Medlock conquers Tucker Invitational

When senior Ian Medlock found out he would be playing on the junior varsity squad in the William H. Tucker Invitational, he set a goal for himself: to win his last home tournament as a Lobo. With scores of 72-69-70-211 on the ultra-demanding, windswept UNM Championship Course Sept.

Young teams earn experience

Despite four UNM team leaders red-shirting this season, the men's cross country team managed to snag a fourth-place win and the Lobo women took fifth place at the Lobo Invitational. The cross country team opened up the first of three running seasons at home this weekend.

Athletes of the Week

Riann Lucy Cross Country Freshman Lucy led the women's cross country team to a 5th place finish this weekend at the Lobo Invitational. Lucy ran the 6K race in 23:56, coming in 27th out of 103 runners. Ian Medlock Golf Senior Medlock is a captain of the golf team.

Injury not as bad as feared

Lobo fans were silent and teammates fell to their knees at the sight of senior team captain Jason Lenzmeier lying motionless on the field. It took two trainers to help him to the sidelines and onto a cart that took him to the locker room where he would undergo examinations and x-rays.

Tough Loss

by Phil Parker Daily Lobo The Lobos fell to BYU 10-7 in a tightly-contested game of field position Saturday night at University Stadium. The loss marked the 21st defeat in the last 23 meetings between UNM and the Cougars. Trouble started for the Lobos on the third series of the game.

Lobos lose to ranked foes

Staff Report The UNM men's soccer team lost two close games against ranked opponents over the weekend in the Mi Cocina Classic in Dallas. Friday night the Lobos fell to 19th-ranked Tulsa 3-2. The game opened with an early score by Tulsa's Ryan Pore.

Conference reputation on the line

by Phil Parker Daily Lobo UNM welcomes BYU to Albuquerque this weekend for the first conference game of the season. The Lobos are looking to bounce back from a tough loss to Texas Tech a week ago. Senior linebacker Billy Strother said the early season match-up is important for both teams.

Injured Lobo back on track

It has taken Jacquelyne Gallegos a full year to recover from a severe car crash last September. This weekend she will compete in the Lobo Invitational, the team's first cross country meet of the year. Gallegos, who is from Pojoaque, N.M., started her running career when she was in fifth grade.

Lobos prepare for MWC rivals

BYU has been one of UNM's greatest football rivals since 1951. To date the Cougars have a commanding 38-13-1 lead in the series history, but the Lobos finally put an end to the Cougars reign last season in Provo, Utah. It was the first time in 31 years the Lobos beat BYU on its home turf.

Red Menace adds to home spirit

by Tom Sena Daily Lobo When UNM finished construction on University Stadium two years ago, a new section of seats was added to the north end zone and a new tradition in UNM football was born. A group of fans calling themselves the Red Menace saw the addition to the stadium as an opportunity to create some enthusiasm for Lobo football.

Lobos face top teams in Tucker

The 48th edition of the William H. Tucker Invitational presents the UNM men's golf team with an opportunity not often seen in the collegiate game - a three-peat. The Lobos will get their big chance on home soil, at the UNM Championship Course. "It would be awesome," head coach Glen Millican said.

Fashola suffers season-ending knee injury

Staff Report UNM linebacker Fola Fashola will undergo knee surgery tomorrow after tearing an anterior cruciate ligament this week in practice. The 5-foot-11 senior transfer from Kilgore Junior College came to UNM last fall. He played at right outside linebacker and safety positions, posting 50 tackles last season - nine of them for loss of yards.

Lobos fail to stop TTU offense

by Phil Parker Daily Lobo LUBBOCK, Texas - Despite putting up big numbers in the second half on Saturday, the Lobos couldn't dig themselves out of a 21-point hole and fell to Texas Tech 42-28. The game's first half featured a series of low-lights for UNM that brought back memories of last year's 49-0 blowout loss the Lobos suffered against the Red Raiders.

Women's soccer efforts flounder

Staff Report The UNM women's soccer team traveled to Irvine, Calif., this weekend for the Nike Classic Tournament, but returned winless. The Lobos tied with UC-Irvine 0-0 in double overtime Friday night and fell to Cal State-Fulleron Sunday afternoon 2-0.

UNM defends homecourt

For the second year in a row, UNM came out on top in the Comcast Lobo Invitational. The Lobos defeated Youngstown State University, Alcorn State University and the University of Delaware this weekend at Johnson Arena. UNM followed a pattern in all three matches: jumping out to a strong start, and then allowing the opponent to get a foot in the door and catch up.

Athletes of the Week

This week's New Mexico Daily Lobo Athletes of the Week are sophomore Chelsea Sondrup of the volleyball team and sophomore Lance Watson of the men's soccer team. Sondrup was named MVP of the Comcast Lobo Invitational and helped lead the Lobos to an undefeated, first place finish at the tournament.
