Inexperience hurts UNM golf team

For the second straight outing, the UNM men's golf team struggled against a strong field -- this time at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate in Austin, Texas, March 16-17. "I think that in these last two tournaments, our inexperience and lack of maturity have really gotten exposed," head coach Glen Millican said.

Lobos win 2 against Utes The Lobo baseball team went 2-3 over spring break, dropping two games No. 20 Arizona and winning two of a three-game series with the Utah Utes. Shortstop Dusty Young continued his hot hitting, extending his hitting streak to 26 games.

Sweet victory

The Lobos and Jordan Adams put on a show in their 91-85 overtime thriller victory over the Miami Hurricanes Saturday night at The Pit. Adams led the Lobos with 27 points, seven rebounds and eight blocks. Posting her 336th block, Adams tied Luc Longley's UNM career record.

For a moment late Saturday night, UNM's Mandi Moore looked forlorn. Sitting on the dais at The Pit's interview room after the Lobos' 91-85 overtime victory over the University of Miami, a look of pain passed over the sophomore point guard's face as teammate Chelsea Grear talked about the first half of the game.

Baseball continues win streak

by Phil Parker Daily Lobo The Lobos came out swinging against BYU Thursday, winning 19-14 in a game that saw their conference record improve to 4-0. Senior shortstop Dusty Young set the tone for the Lobos with his first at-bat, slamming a solo home run over the center field wall.

Lobos' future looks bright

All season long, the Lobo men's basketball team has been hampered by some distinguishable factors. The Lobos have noticeably had lack of size, lack of depth and lack of scoring, all because of youth and inexperience. Despite those insufficiencies, they played with heart and intensity.

Lobos to host Miami in NCAA first round

What a difference a year makes. Last year, when the UNM women's basketball team gathered to watch the NCAA Tournament Selection Show, they sat nervously hoping they wouldn't be passed over. This season, having returned home with the MWC tournament title and automatic bid to the Big Dance in hand, their nails were safe - these Lobos knew they were in.

Athletes receive MWC honors

Staff Report Senior guard Ruben Douglas of the UNM men's basketball team was named Mountain West Conference Player of the Year Monday. Douglas torched the MWC, averaging a record 32.1 PPG in conference games. He leads the nation in scoring with 28.1 PPG.

Lobo baseball team sends visitors packing

Staff Report The UNM baseball team pulled out some late-inning heroics against the University of Texas-Arlington for a 17-12 victory Saturday afternoon at Lobo Field. The game began with the Mustangs getting off to an early one run lead courtesy of Ryan Roberts solo home run.

Lobo golf struggles in Vegas showdown

Staff Report Just five of 15 teams finished under-par at the Toyota Las Vegas Intercollegiate golf tournament last weekend; UNM was not one of them. The Lobos finished the event in 13th place, with a three-day total of 879; 15 shots over-par and a distant 23 shots behind winner Oklahoma State University.

Skiing UNM's ski team finished the 2003 NCAA Skiing Championships with a final score of 541.5 -- fourth-place overall. The University of Vermont and Colorado University slid past the Lobos on the last day of competition with CU taking third at 546.5 points, just five points ahead of UNM.

Athletes of the Week

Senior center Jordan Adams of the women's basketball team and Bart Scott of the men's tennis team are this week's New Mexico Daily Lobo Athletes of the Week. Adams helped her team to crucial victories over Utah and BYU. She had nine points and seven rebounds in a 51-48 comeback victory over Utah Thursday.

Seniors say so long to Pit in perfect form

The Lobos capped a perfect 7-0 home season with a brilliant 63-44 win over BYU Saturday at The Pit. With the win, UNM secured the second-place slot in the Mountain West Conference, following only Utah, who the Lobos defeated Thursday night. UNM has now beaten every team in the MWC.

Tennis battles against NMSU, ends up on top

by Phil Parker Daily Lobo The UNM men's tennis team improved its record to 7-4 by defeating intrastate rival New Mexico State 4-3 Saturday. Despite losing sophomore David Kowalski to a sprained ankle, the Lobos had reason to look forward to the match with the return of Ryan Stotland and senior leader Bart Scott.

Men's basketball jockeys for Mountain West spot

The night of Jan. 28, 2002, might not ring a bell in the minds of many students at UNM. For five of the nine current Lobo men's basketball players and their head coach, it means nothing, because they were elsewhere, not yet a part of the program. To Lobo basketball enthusiasts and veteran players Ruben Douglas, Jamaal Williams, Chad Bell and Ryan Ashcraft, that date marks the last time UNM earned a victory on foreign hardwood.

Golf team to take on Las Vegas

A trip to Sin City March 7-9 will give the UNM men's golf team a chance to cash in big against some of the best teams in the nation. The Lobos head to the Toyota Intercollegiate with the same lineup that tied for second place in last month's John Burns Invitational in Honolulu.

Lobos get taste of revenge

The Lobos rallied to a stunning second-half victory over 25th ranked Utah, 51-48 Thursday night at The Pit. UNM lost to the Utes in overtime last month and have been anticipating revenge ever since. However, instead of coming out confident on its home floor, UNM seemed somewhat intimidated throughout the first half.

Track stars shine at indoors

Keren Sari-Bentzur brought home the gold medal in the women's pentathlon, setting a school-record with 3,845 points, to go along with another first-place finish in the women's long jump with a leap of 5.

In Lobo Country, basketball is the pastime. In this, the 100th anniversary of Lobo Basketball, a century's worth of memories, heroes and legacies have passed through Albuquerque. Through the years, players and teams have been stamped into Lobo history.
