Lobos run through opponents in tourney

by Todd Burns Daily Lobo FORT COLLINS, Colo. -Many UNM track athletes stayed home this weekend - while many others, who had not competed for two weeks, rose to the challenge in Fort Collins, Colo. Freshman RaShawn Jackson was one individual who answered the call of his team with a strong performance.

Vital victory leads Lobos to 2nd place

by Phil Parker Daily Lobo In a game of big plays, none was bigger than Lawson Burnat's pinch-hit, walk-off homerun that gave the Lobos a 12-11 win and capped an important three-game sweep of Utah on Sunday. With the score tied 11-11 in the bottom of the ninth, head coach Rich Alday sent Burnat and his left-handed bat to the plate against Brady Martinez, a right-handed, side-arm pitcher who had been effective in relief to that point.

Golf takes MWC tourney

Maybe it was junior Katrina Leckovic's par at the 54th and final hole of the Mountain West Conference women's golf championship Saturday. Maybe it was the 4-under-par 280 posted by the UNM squad Friday in a second round marked by wind, sleet and snow - a round head coach Jackie Booth called "one of the best I've ever watched in those kinds of conditions.

Lobos on prowl in MWC

by Phil Parker Daily Lobo UNM welcomes Utah to Lobo field this weekend for an important three-game series. As the season winds down, the Lobos are looking to claw their way back to the top of the Mountain West standings. After a series loss to BYU in Provo, Utah, last weekend, the Lobos (10-8 MWC) are fourth in the conference standings.

Men out to grab NCAA bid

by Arthur Simoni and Lee Cornell Daily Lobo The Lobo men's tennis team, recently crowned regular season Mountain West Conference co-champions, heads to Provo, Utah today to try and win the MWC tournament and grab an automatic NCAA bid. "We want to win it," head coach Alan Dils said.

Staff Report The UNM track and field team travels to Fort Collins, Colo., today to compete in the Jack Christiansen Invitational Saturday. For many of the 45 athletes heading north, this weekend marks the first competition in several weeks. The Lobos are coming off trips to Austin, Texas, in the Texas Relays and the Mt.

Despite two inches of snow in Sunriver, Ore., that caused a change of venue and delayed starting time for the Mountain West Conference women's golf championship, the Lobos are poised for a true rarity in sports - a four-peat. The fate of Thursday's first round was still up in the air at about 11 a.

Lobos battle, but unable to beat NMSU

The New Mexico State University Aggies beat the Lobos 16-14 in a slugfest at Lobo Field Tuesday afternoon. NMSU used six homers on a day when winds were blowing 35 miles an hour straight out to left field. One of those home runs came off the bat of the Aggies' Billy Becher on the second pitch from Robert Lacheur in the fifth inning to put NMSU up 15-12.

Tennis sets up for tournament

Staff Report The UNM women's tennis team heads to California today for the Mountain West Conference tournament in San Diego. Seven women will try to conquer the MWC tennis championship for the Lobos, but they will have some stiff competition. The University of Nevada-Las Vegas is the favorite going into the tournament and San Diego State University will also pose a challenge to UNM.

Quarterbacks duke it out in game

Despite promising performances from the Lobos' two young quarterbacks in Saturday's Cherry-Silver game, UNM head football coach Rocky Long says the starting job still belongs to incumbent senior Casey Kelly. "Neither one of the other quarterbacks have proved they're better than Casey," Long said.

Staff Report The UNM baseball team dropped into fourth place in the Mountain West Conference with a pair of losses to BYU in Provo, Utah, on Saturday. BYU, 12, UNM, 4 In the first game of the doubleheader, which was played because of a rain out on Friday, the Cougars jumped out to an early 7-0 lead.

UNM track athletes set new records, rankings at relays

Staff Report A select group of UNM men's and women's track athletes had quality performances this weekend at the Mt. San Antonio College relays in California. Sophomore Brigid Isworth set a new school record in the pole vault with a 12-07.50 mark - good enough to qualify her for the NCAA Midwest regional meet.

Ankle sprain puts UNM running back Moore down

by Lee Cornell Daily Lobo Overshadowing the annual Cherry-Silver game on Saturday was a high ankle sprain sustained by sophomore running back DonTrell Moore. Moore injured the same ankle in the Las Vegas Bowl against UCLA in the Lobos' last game.

Tennis sweeps singles matches

by Rick Bustos Daily Lobo The UNM women's tennis team beat the Texas Tech Lady Raiders 6-1 at the UNM Tennis Club on Saturday. The Lobos lost out on the doubles point, with defeats in the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, but bounced back to sweep all six points from the singles matches.

Athletes of the Week

Keren Sari-Bentzur of the women's track team and Adrian Boyd of the football team are this week's New Mexico Daily Lobo Athletes of the Week. Sari-Bentzur finished sixth, second among collegiate competitors, in the heptathlon at the prestigious Mt. SAC College relays this weekend.

UNM track athletes head to Texas

by Todd Burns Daily Lobo A group of 20 athletes from the UNM men's and women's track teams are competing at the Mount San Antonio College Relays this week. Mt. SAC is one of the premier track meets in the Southwest. All athletes must qualify in their respective event and receive an invitation to compete.

Women's Golf Sophomore Kailin Downs has been named the Mountain West Conference women's golfer of the month on the strength of a fourth-place finish at the Ping/ASU Invitational April 4-6. Downs fired rounds of 71-76-69-216 at the Karsten Course to grab her fifth top-five in eight starts this season.

Lobos look to overcome BYU

Staff Report The Lobos look to continue their hot play this weekend in a three-game series against BYU in Provo, Utah. This is an important series for both baseball teams as the season begins to wind down. With identical 9-6 records in the Mountain West Conference, UNM and BYU are tied for second place along with San Diego State, behind front-runner UNLV.

New, old Lobos to face off

UNM tradition continues this weekend when the old meets the new in the annual Cherry-Silver football game at University Stadium Saturday. The contest is the last practice for the football team in the spring season and a chance for newcomers and veterans alike to display their skills in front of the UNM fans.

Athletes of the Week

UNM baseball player Josh Jezek and Ashley VanBoxmeer of the softball team are this week's New Mexico Daily Lobo Athletes of the Week. Jezek delivered a game-winning single in the final contest of the series with San Diego State University Sunday for a 5-4 comeback victory.
