Track team races for top spot

by Todd Burns Daily Lobo The UNM track team will compete in the Mountain West Conference indoor track meet in Colorado Springs, Colo., this weekend. The race for the No. 1 track team in the MWC began on Thursday with the men and women's pentathlon.

Staff Report The UNM baseball team kicks off conference play today against the Air Force Academy at Lobo Field. The Lobos (7-6) won two out of four games last week, splitting a pair of games with New Mexico State University and Portland State University.

While Ruben Douglas's motor thunders through the Mountain West Conference to the hum of 33.5 points per game, his team's engine is sputtering. After a demoralizing loss to San Diego State on Monday, the Lobos' path only gets nastier as they attempt to get themselves out of their recent rut.

Lobo woes continue on road despite better play

The Lobos fell short 74-69 to the University of Nevada-Las Vegas after coming back from a 17-point deficit to tie the game with under two minutes left, Saturday. UNM (9-14, 3-7 MWC) managed to tie the game 62-62 in the closing minutes but could not hold on.

Athletes of the Week

Baseball junior Chris Alexander and senior basketball player Cristal Garcia are this week's New Mexico Daily Lobo Athletes of the Week. Garcia guided the Lobos to crucial victories over Wyoming and Colorado State this week. On Monday she had a team-high 16 points against UW.

Baseball team puts on good showing

Staff Report UNM, 6, NMSU, 2 The UNM baseball team gave an impressive performance this weekend by taking two out of three games in El Paso, Texas. On Friday, the Lobos were led by their ace, James Vermilyea, who had another great outing on the mound.

Women's basketball rocked Pit Saturday

The Lobos made a statement in their 74-54 victory over the Colorado State University, Saturday. The Rams (14-11, 5-6 MWC) needed to be humbled after beating the top two MWC teams earlier in the week. The Lobos (16-7 6-4 MWC) took it upon themselves to do just that.

Lobo tennis cleans up at home

The UNM women's tennis team dominated the 46th-ranked Kansas University Jayhawks, 7-0, Sunday, at the Lobo Tennis Club. The Lobos got off to a quick start, taking two of three doubles matches for the point. The No. 1 doubles team of freshman Maja Kovacek and junior Tjasa Suvak battled gamely, but lost 8-5 to Kansas' Courtney Steinbock and Paige Brown.

Lobo golfers staying steady

The UNM men's golf team grabbed a share of second place in the John Burns Invitational near Honolulu, Hawaii Feb. 19-21. The team's success was due in part to a top-15 performance from its oldest member, and a top-10 from one of its youngest. The Lobos shot under-par as a team in each of the three rounds, finishing with a 14-under total of 850, tied with the San Diego State University Aztecs, seven shots behind the University of Arizona.

Lobos lasso in Cowgirls

The Lobos got sweet revenge in defeating the University of Wyoming Cowgirls, 70-37, Monday night, at The Pit. UNM lost to Wyoming 71-58 earlier in the year, but it made sure that there would be no repeat of that this time around. The Lobos (15-7, 5-4 MWC) played penny-pinching defense in forcing the Cowgirls (15-8, 5-5 MWC) to miss their first 11 shots of the game en route to a commanding 33-6 lead well into the first half.

Ski team prepares for meet

After an impressive first-place finish in Crested Butte two weeks ago, the UNM ski team heads back to Colorado for the NCAA West Regional meet this Sunday and Monday in Winter Park, Colo. The Lobos are seated third overall going into regionals, following Utah and Colorado respectively.

Staff Report The UNM swim team will try to improve on last year's sixth place finish in the Mountain West Conference Swimming and Diving Championships this week. "We had a good meet last year and I think we have a better team this year," head coach Bill Spahn said.

Lobo men ready to hit Hawaii courses

As the weather in Albuquerque does its best impression of a schizophrenic madman, the UNM men's golf team heads to tropical Hawaii for its second event of the spring 2003 season. The trip won't be all fun in the sun for the Lobos, however, as they will face a formidable, 15-school field and somewhat unfamiliar, sometimes unpredictable playing conditions in the John Burns Invitational near Honolulu, Hawaii.

Wolves to battle Buffaloes

The UNM Ice Wolves are on the road this weekend, traveling to Boulder, Colo., to face the University of Colorado Buffaloes. It should prove to be a difficult undertaking. After dropping the first game to CU in a home series in their first meeting, the Lobos came back the next night to tie 3-3 in a battle that was one of UNM's strongest showings of the year.

Some Lobo redemption at Pit

The UNM men's basketball team played perhaps its most well-rounded game of the season in defeating Colorado State University, 82-72, Monday night. The Lobos had three players score in double figures. Freshman guard Mark Walters led the way scoring 19 points on 8-15 shooting from the field.

Lobo women get redemption by beating Air Force

Staff Report The Lobos ended a two-game losing streak, beating the Air Force Academy Falcons, 71-40, at Clune Arena in Colorado Springs, Saturday. Currently sitting in fifth place in the Mountain West Conference, UNM balanced out its conference record at 4-4, and is now, thanks to a BYU loss, in the running for second place.

Lobos not able to hold Wyoming

University of Wyoming senior guard Donta Richardson’s career-high 39 points propelled the Cowboy’s to a 103-91 victory over the Lobos at The Pit, Saturday night. Richardson buried UNM, hitting seven-of-10 3-pointers and making key shots when UW needed them while going toe-to-toe with Ruben Douglas, who poured on a career-high 43 points.

Tennis match ends on sour note

The UNM men’s tennis team fought to the bitter end before falling to Texas Tech University 4-3, Sunday, at the Lobo Tennis Club. With the score tied 3-3, the final match between Lobo newcomer Henry Gers and John Walker would decide the fate of both teams.

Lobos looking for revenge

UNM looks to avenge its overtime loss to the University of Wyoming from one month ago this weekend. Remember back to Jan. 13. The Lobo men's basketball team had dropped six of eight games. The team was on the verge of a catastrophic meltdown after being humiliated on national television by head coach Ritchie McKay's former team, Colorado State University.
