Lobos strong at start, but fade in 76-68 loss to Cal

by Tony Niklinski Daily Lobo The UNM men's basketball team came up empty-handed Friday night at The Pit, as the Lobos were defeated by the University of California 76-68. The California Bears are a solid Pac-10 team, year in and year out. During last year's NCAA Tournament, the Bears went as far the second round before being eliminated by the University of Pittsburgh.

People didn't think highly of our team because of some unfamiliar faces. The exhibition games are used to help tighten a team's offense and defense as well as team unity.

Staff Report The UNM men's and women's basketball programs and the baseball and softball programs recently announced their signings for the fall. Men's basketball head coach Ritchie McKay signed three players for next year, as did women's head coach Don Flanagan.

Lobos to face Bradley in NCAAs

by Lee Cornell Daily Lobo The UNM men's soccer team had mixed reactions to the announcement of its seeding in the NCAA tournament at Coaches Sports Grill on Monday afternoon. Cheers went up amongst the team as the Lobos' name appeared, but they quickly subsided as the players and coaches realized they would be taking to the road to face Bradley University in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

Gonzales to NCAAs, cross country teams miss championships

Staff Report The UNM men's cross country team finished seventh in its final meet at the NCAA Mountain Region Cross Country Championship last weekend at the UNM North Golf Course. The seventh place finish was not enough to earn an at large bid in the NCAA Championship.

Gutsy games prelude to MWC tournament

by Kenn Rodriguez Daily Lobo After losing several close conference matches, the UNM volleyball team finally got a pair of gutsy performances - which bores well entering this week's MWC Championship tournament. The seventh-seeded Lobos start the tourney with a rematch against second-seeded San Diego State University, Thursday.

Gooooooooal!

UNM's men's soccer team won the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation soccer championships Sunday afternoon courtesy of a golden goal by freshman Ben Ashwill. The 2-1 overtime victory over San Jose State University gives the Lobos a berth in the NCAA College Cup tournament.

Spikers beat UNLV, fall to SDSU

Staff Report The UNM volleyball team spilt a pair of tough Mountain West Conference matches this weekend at the Johnson Arena. The Lobos (8-19, 3-11 MWC) lost a hard-fought match in five games 30-26, 24-30, 30-27, 21-30 and 14-16 to San Diego State University Friday.

Lobo women take Flight in exhibition win

by Kenn Rodriguez Daily Lobo The UNM women's basketball team took flight Saturday night defeating the Houston Flight team 94-50 in its first exhibition game. Amazingly, the game was not as close as the score indicates. The Lobos took a 21-6 lead in the first six minutes and never looked back, dominating the contest in front of a crowd of 8,555.

Lobos break BYU streak

The streak is finally over. Saturday the UNM football team beat Brigham Young University 20-16, winning in Provo, Utah for the first time in 31 years. The Lobos used a combination of stingy defense and timely offense to snap the program's 14-game losing streak at the Cougars' LaVelle Edwards Stadium.

UNM opens up in 90-78 victory over EA All Stars

by Michael Beniash Daily Lobo On Friday night, the UNM men's basketball team electrified The Pit crowd via a run and gun assault, en route to a 90-78 victory over the EA All Stars. The Lobo's prolific backcourt along with the athletic ability of Jamaal Williams showed signs of brilliance in the final tune up before their regular season opener.

University of Denver 2, Sacramento State University, 1 The University of Denver Pioneers outscored the Sacramento State Hornets 2-1 in the second game of the first round of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation soccer championships Thursday night at the UNM soccer complex.

The Lobos and their seniors will take center stage for their final home series against their conference rivals from the west, San Diego State University and the University of Nevada at Las Vegas.

Lobos eager to end Provo jinx

The UNM football team looks to end a 31-year losing streak in Provo, Utah, Saturday. In fact, the last time the Lobos beat BYU in Utah, head coach Rocky Long was UNM's quarterback. Long doesn't remember much from the game in 1971 but does remember that the Lobos were able to run the ball effectively in a 14-0 victory.

Lobos win dual meet, beat BYU for first time

Staff Report The Lobo swim team enjoyed the sweet taste of victory Thursday night. UNM swept the conference dual meet, winning three head-to-head competitions. The biggest surprise of the weekend was the Lobos' upset of conference favorite, Brigham Young University.

Soccer team proud despite loss in MWC

Despite its 5-1 loss to Brigham Young University in the Mountain West Conference Championship Saturday, the UNM women's soccer team has plenty to be proud of this season. The Lobos finished with their best record in five seasons, 12-8-1 and advanced to a championship game for only the second time ever.

Lobo defense wraps up Aztecs

The Lobos needed one last defensive stop in the fourth quarter and got it when junior linebacker Billy Strother knocked down San Diego State quarterback Adam Hall's pass on the fourth down with seven seconds left in the game preserving a 15-8 victory. The Aztecs made the game interesting in the final minute when Hall and wide receiver Kassim Osgood hooked up for a 39-yard completion down to the UNM 13-yard line with just 40 seconds left.
