The team was on the verge of a catastrophic meltdown after being humiliated on national television by head coach Ritchie McKay's former team, Colorado State University.

Staff Report University of New Mexico athletes are getting smarter -- or at least their cumulative grade-point average is getting better. For the first time, Lobo athletes combined for a GPA of more than 3.0, with a 3.03 in the fall 2002 semester. This marks the highest GPA since the University began tracking student-athletes in the fall of 1988.

Staff Report The Lobos suffered a heartbreaking loss Saturday, falling in overtime to Mountain West leader Utah University 64-61, in Salt Lake City. After overcoming a 10-point deficit at the half, the Lobos (13-7, 3-4 MWC) held the advantage for most of the second period, but ultimately lost due to clutch 3-point shooting by the Utes.
It was a bitterly cold day on Sunday afternoon, but the UNM baseball team's bats were blazing hot while defeating New Mexico Highlands 28-3. The Lobos scored at will and provided no mercy for their instate rivals from Las Vegas, N.M. UNM scored early and often while demolishing the Cowboy's pitching staff.

Staff Report The Lobo women's basketball team has fallen to a record of 13-6, losing to the BYU Cougars last night in Provo, Utah. The Lobos jumped out to a 10-point lead early in the first half. UNM settled into a comfortable rhythm right away, making eight of their first 14 shots.
College basketball is a 40-minute game. Playing only 30 minutes, on average, constitutes a loss, especially during the conference schedule. This scenario has been the storyline for this season's New Mexico men's basketball squad. While staying competitive in all of their six conference games, the Lobos have not gotten over the hump, winning just one.
One of the best and most consistent athletic teams this year at UNM has gone largely unnoticed -- the ski team. With the men's basketball program having possibly its worst season in 20 years, perhaps more attention should be focused on a ski team that has consistently gone out and competed in every tournament it has entered.
TUCSON, Ariz.-- The UNM men's golf team began the 2003 spring season Feb. 3-4 with a promising, though uneven performance at the PING Arizona Intercollegiate in Tucson, Ariz. The Lobos showed intermittent flashes of brilliance at the 6,785 yard, par-71 Arizona National Golf Club, eventually finishing at 4-under-par 848, in a tie for sixth with Arizona State University.

This time, UNM hung around for the majority of the game before hitting a slump in the second half that it could not overcome. After two quick buckets by Jamaal Williams to start the second half, the Lobos took a 40-39 lead.
