Football: Lobos struggle to draw fans to games

The University of New Mexico Football team is halfway through its home schedule, and at the current pace, it will be the lowest number of fans per game in the Bob Davie era. Through three games, the Lobos are averaging 17,908 fans to see the team play at the 39,224 seat Dreamstyle Stadium. The home opener against University of the Incarnate Word, which drew 18,213 fans, was the smallest crowd for a home opener since at least the 2003 season, the last year which the information is available online for every game.

Fantasy Football: Elite Offenses vs. Bottom Rung Offenses

Last night, how to pick a flex player was the talking point for the opening fantasy football segment. This time around, the point of emphasis is on how third option wide receivers on the top five offenses compare to the number one receivers of the worst five offenses. This was done a little tongue-in- cheek, of course the number one option was going to be better than the third option. Bad offenses need to give the ball to someone and will still have about the same amount of possessions as the top tier teams. This has been my orthodox method for years— start the player who will lead his team in targets. The explosiveness of the team itself does not matter as much as that of the player— something most people will realize when they look at the numbers.

Football: Fresno State’s defense stonewalls UNM in 38-7 victory

The University of New Mexico football team was beaten, battered and bruised in a 38-7 thumping by the Fresno State Bulldogs on Saturday evening at Dreamstyle Stadium. In head coach Bob Davie’s assessment, it was a product of an “unpolished” offense and a culmination of unnecessary penalties. Nine Lobo penalties — which accounted for 125 yards — didn’t help out much either, as Davie pointed out in the press conference after the game.

Women's Soccer: Lobos continue to impress at home

The University of New Mexico women's soccer team has had one of its most successful campaigns at home and continue to take care of business over the weekend. New Mexico (10-5-2, 6-2-2 MW) improved to 8-1-1 at home — the most wins at UNM Soccer Complex since the 2013 season. The team notched eight home victories that season as well, but also played an additional five games in Albuquerque to get there. The Lobos started the weekend in the upper half off the Mountain West standings, but likely needed at least one win to stay there. UNM picked up two and appears to be in good shape with just one regular season game remaining before the Mountain West Tournament.

Football: Lobos search for identity on offense

Fresno State came to Albuquerque and proved once again why they are considered one of the top teams in the Group of Five conferences in their 38-7 victory over the New Mexico Lobos. The Lobos, who lost consecutive games for the first time this season, struggled to generate anything offensively, especially in the first half. It took the Lobos until their drive which began with 3:21 to play in the second quarter and ended in a touchdown, to break into Fresno State territory with the ball. Prior to that, the Lobos had been unable to move past their own 35-yard-line. Those would be the only points that UNM would score.

Men's soccer: Lobos to face highest ranked opponent so far this season

The University of New Mexico Men’s Soccer team will face its toughest test of the season on Sunday against the No. 3 ranked University of Kentucky Wildcats in Lexington, Kentucky at 11 a.m.. The Lobos are coming off of a 2-1 win over South Carolina last Saturday, a victory which broke a four-game losing streak and came on the heels of the announcement that there would be no spring season for the team, a decision that further angered supporters of the program.

Volleyball: Lobos outplayed in Rams' sweep

The UNM volleyball team fell for a third game in a row, losing to Colorado State Thursday night at a home game. The CSU Rams defeated the Lobos in a quick three sets, putting the Lobos at a 5-4 record in the Mountain West Conference. The Lobos charted season-low 30 kills, 29 total assists, a .059 hitting percentage and 24 errors. Compared to the .333 hitting percentage delivered by the Rams, any Lobo effort fell short against CSU. With the loss of Carly Beddingfield on the court due to an ankle sprain, the UNM team struggled to find momentum and to get ahead.

Football: UNM to face red hot Fresno St.

The University of New Mexico football team will host the one-loss Fresno State Bulldogs on Saturday evening at Dreamstyle Stadium. The Lobos (3-3, 1-1 Mountain West) are coming off a loss to CSU last weekend, in which they lost on a field goal as time expired. It was a heartbreaker for the Lobos, as they had an 18-17 lead late in the fourth quarter. But the Rams’ two-minute offense prevailed, and they got into field goal range, which set up the game-winning field goal.

NM Attorney General seizes Paul Krebs' credit card records

The New Mexico Attorney General’s Office has seized the credit card records of former UNM Athletic Director Paul Krebs in search of evidence of money laundering, fraud and embezzlement. The news was first reported by Jessica Dyer of the Albuquerque Journal. This is part of an ongoing investigation into finances at UNM that was started by Attorney General Hector Balderas last year. The search warrant, a copy of which has been obtained by the Daily Lobo, was served in an attempt to confirm that a $25,000 dollar payment that was made to the UNM Foundation in May was made by Krebs himself and not an anonymous donor, as Krebs announced at the time of the donation.

Cross Country: Women place first, men 12th at Wisconsin Pre-Nationals

Things are often better the second time around. That was the case for the University of New Mexico cross country team after seeing Zimmer Championship Course in Madison, Wisconsin for a second time in three weeks when it competed in the 2018 Wisconsin Pre-Nationals. The UNM men turned in a 12th place performance — 14 spots better than its showing on Sept. 28 — and the women's team took first place, improving on their third place finish a couple of weekends ago.

Men's Soccer: No spring season for team

The University of New Mexico men's soccer team found out last week that their upcoming spring season was no longer — or maybe never was — in the plans after it was informed by the athletic department of the decision. In August, the University of New Mexico Board of Regents voted to eliminate men's soccer — as well as beach volleyball and both men's and women's skiing. The programs were supposed to continue through July 1, 2019, when they are scheduled to be discontinued.

The University of New Mexico Lobo hockey team delivered a dominating two-game performance over the Texas Tech Red Raiders at the Outpost Ice Arena, outscoring its opponent 30-3 over the weekend. New Mexico improved to 5-2-1 overall on the season after a 19-2 victory on Friday night — a game in which the Lobos scored more goals than its opponent had shots attempted. And on Saturday, the team continued to put on a scoring clinic The Lobos needed just 33 seconds to light the lamp, as team captain Nate Taglialegami skated through defenders and beat the goalie for a quick 1-0 lead.

Football: Lobos lose nail-biter to Colorado State

FORT COLLINS, CO — An opportunity to spoil Homecoming and break an eight-game losing streak, squandered. The University of New Mexico (3-3, 1-1 Mountain West) had an 18-17 lead with just over two minutes remaining in the game, but the two minute offense and a second chance for field goal kicker Wyatt Bryan gave the Colorado State Rams (3-4, 1-1 MW) a 20-18 victory on Saturday. “I think we have a chance to have a good team, because there’s a bunch of hurting people in that locker room and because of that we have a chance to try to continue to get better,” head coach Bob Davie said.

Volleyball: Lobos prepare for Cali roadtrip

Coming off back-to-back victories over the University of Nevada and San José State, the UNM volleyball team takes on San Diego State in California on Thursday. The team is currently first in the Mountain West Conference, standing with a 5-1 conference record. Lauren Twitty, an outside hitter for the Lobos, is currently in the top five for kills in the MWC with 252 kills in 72 sets for the season and 3.50 k/s. San Diego is seventh in the conference standings with a 3-3 record. With both teams currently holding a winning streak under their belts, the Lobos come into the match with strong statistics backing them.
