Men's Soccer: UNM adds midfielder and forward to its roster

Head coach Jeremy Fishbein announced in a press release that the Lobo men’s soccer team has added two offensive-minded transfers: attacking midfielder Colin Brezniak, from the University of Pittsburgh, and forward Matthew Puig, from the University of Tulsa. Both players will be eligible for the program’s spring schedule, which begins in March and have three years of eligibility remaining.

Men’s Basketball: Jackson named MW Player of the Week

As of late, things have only gotten better for the University of New Mexico men’s basketball team. Winners of four of their last five games, the Lobos now sit at third in the conference behind Nevada and Boise State. The Lobos can add on to that trail of success, too, as senior guard Antino Jackson was named Mountain West Player of the Week on Monday.

Football: Davie adds Archie McDaniel, Perry Eliano to coaching staff

The University of New Mexico officially announced the hiring of three new assistant coaches to football coach Bob Davie’s staff on Saturday, including Calvin Magee to serve as offensive coordinator and running backs coach, which was previously reported, as well as Perry Eliano to serve as cornerbacks coach and special teams coordinator, and Archie McDaniel to coach outside and rush linebackers. Most recently, Eliano was the associate head coach and defensive coordinator at Bowling Green University for the past two seasons. Last season, the BGU defense gave up an average of 506 yards per game and forced 24 turnovers (including 15 fumble recoveries) and scored two defensive touchdowns.

Women's Basketball: Lobos dealt second-straight loss despite record-setting scoring performance

A record-setting effort was not enough for the Lobos, as the University of New Mexico women's basketball team dropped a road game to Mountain West rival San Diego State. The Aztecs (9-9, 3-4 MW) got back to .500 and downed the Lobos (16-5, 4-4 MW) by a score of 97-89 on Saturday afternoon, spoiling a 41-point eruption from UNM senior guard Cherise Beynon.

Men's Basketball: Lobos come from behind to knock off San Diego State

The University of New Mexico men's basketball team won for the fourth time in its last five tries, knocking off San Diego State in dramatic fashion at Dreamstyle Arena Saturday night. With the score all knotted up, senior transfer Antino Jackson what proved to be the game winner to complete an impressive come-from-behind Lobo victory, overcoming a 13-point deficit to defeat the Aztecs by a score of 79-75. New Mexico improved to 10-11 on the season and 5-3 in Mountain West play, while San Diego State fell to 3-4 in conference and an 11-7 overall record.

Football: Calvin Magee named offensive coordinator

University of New Mexico head football coach Bob Davie has named Calvin Magee as his new offensive coordinator, according to a report from FootballScoop that was confirmed by multiple outlets. Magee comes to New Mexico from the University of Arizona, where he served as associate head coach, co-offensive coordinator, as well as tight ends and running backs coach under Rich Rodriguez, who was fired in early January after a university investigation into misconduct that included allegations of sexual harassment.

Men's Soccer: Jason Beaulieu signs homegrown contract with Montreal Impact

Former University of New Mexico goalkeeper Jason Beaulieu has signed a homegrown contract with the Montreal Impact, the club announced last week. Beaulieu, who just completed his senior season with the Lobos, is a Montreal native and was a member of the Montreal Impact Youth Academy prior to signing with New Mexico. Beaulieu was a four-year starter for the Lobos, playing every second of his senior season between the posts. He recorded a .95 goals against average, allowing 18 goals on the year and recording five shutouts behind a total of 81 saves. He appeared in a total of 69 games at New Mexico, finishing with a record of 34-22-11 and a total of 22 shutouts.

Women's Basketball: Lobo shooting fades in second half, dealt first home loss of the season

The University of New Mexico women's basketball team got off to a hot start at Dreamstyle Arena Wednesday evening, building an early double-digit lead. But its not how you start, it's how you finish—and the offense was hard to come by in the second half as UNLV outlasted a late Lobo rally to hold on for a 68-66 victory. New Mexico (16-4, 4-3 MW) wasted no time jumping all over its opponent as all five starters scored from the field heading into the first media timeout. Senior guard Alex Lapeyrolerie connected on a 3-point attempt to open the scoring for the game, which was followed by another deep ball from freshman Jasmine Smith to put the Lobos up 6-0.

Women’s Basketball: Lobos to host UNLV on Wednesday

Though their records, overall, aren’t comparable, UNLV still sits above the University of New Mexico women’s basketball team in the Mountain West standings. But on Wednesday evening, the Lobos (16-3, 4-2 MW) can climb the ladder with a win over the visiting Rebels (8-7, 3-1 MW) in a battle of No. 2 vs. No. 3 in the Mountain West. Most recently for UNM was its first win over Fresno State Saturday afternoon at home after losing two straight on the road, to the likes of San Jose State and the conference leader in Wyoming.

Women’s Basketball: Lobos win at home over Fresno State after two-game road skid

After a two-game road skid, a conference game at home was a welcome sight for the University of New Mexico women’s basketball team. On Saturday, after 10 days since their last win when they defeated Boise State, the Lobos hosted Fresno State at Dreamstyle Arena — a game UNM won, 88-75, behind an offensive resurgence, in which the Lobos nailed nine 3-pointers (9-for-21) after making only 3-of-16 just one game ago. UNM (16-3, 4-2 MW) made 44.3 percent of its attempts, behind Jaisa Nunn (20 points, 10 rebounds) and Cherise Beynon’s (20 points, 10 assists) double-double outings.

Women’s Basketball: Lobos lose second straight on the road

With another game on the road came another loss for the University of New Mexico women’s basketball team. Wednesday’s contest in Laramie, Wyoming was supposed to be a rebound for the Lobos (15-3, 3-2 MW) after they fell to a below .500 team in San Jose State over the weekend. Instead, a poor shooting effort—especially from long range—led to UNM’s demise, as they fell to the Cowgirls (10-5, 3-1 MW), 66-55, at Arena-Auditorium. The Lobos’ shooting woes were in full effect against Wyoming, as they shot 35.4 percent from the field and hit only three of its 16 3-point attempts. The Cowgirls, on the other hand, shot a much better 43.6 percent from the field, while also nailing seven 3s in the game.

Men’s Basketball: Lobos win second conference game in a row

The University of New Mexico men’s basketball team is on an upward path, after defeating Wyoming at home on Wednesday, 75-66, to mark the team’s second straight win—both of which were conference matches. UNM (8-10, 3-2 MW) was led by senior guard Antino Jackson’s season-high 20 points, and senior forward Joe Furstinger’s 17 points and 10 rebounds. It marked Furstinger’s fifth double-double this season. “I honestly really praise Coach on my second-half efforts,” Jackson said in a press conference after the game. “He really got me going and I was able to help my team. My team was telling me that they need me a lot, and I'm the point guard now, so I have to be there for the guys.” In Wyoming (11-6, 2-2 MW), the Lobos faced no slouch. Most recently for the visiting Cowboys, prior to their loss on Wednesday, was a victory over Boise State, who they defeated in overtime.

Men’s Basketball: Lobos beat SJSU decisively at home

The University of New Mexico men’s basketball team is on the up after Saturday’s blowout win over San Jose State, as the Lobos defeated their opponent, 80-47, at Dreamstyle Arena. Five scorers for the Lobos were in the double digits, behind freshman guard Makuach Maluach’s 15 points, junior guard Chris McNeal and Anthony Mathis had 12 points each, senior guard Antino Jackson had 11 and senior forward Joe Furstinger, who nearly had a double-double with nine rebounds, scored 10 points. As a team, UNM also made 13 3-pointers and shot 46.7 from the field. On the other hand, the Lobos held SJSU to 31.8 percent shooting on the night.

Women’s Basketball: Lobos lose first conference game of the season at San Jose State

Saturday afternoon’s matchup at San Jose State didn’t go as planned for the University of New Mexico women’s basketball team. In the team’s fourth conference appearance this season, the Lobos (15-2, 3-1 MW) lost their first Mountain West game to a below .500 Spartans team, who laid it on UNM in the second half to win, 95-86, at the Event Center. After the Lobos garnered a 49-42 lead by halftime, the Spartans (5-10, 2-2 MW) outscored their opponent 53-37 in the second half.

Men’s Basketball: Lobos host 3-11 San Jose State on Saturday

In the team’s fourth conference appearance this season—posting two losses on the road against, and a win at home—the University of New Mexico men’s basketball team will play host to, record wise, the worst team in the Mountain West in San Jose State on Saturday evening at 7 p.m. The Spartans (3-11, 0-3 MW), which have played three conference games like UNM, have lost all three to the likes of Utah State, Colorado State and UNLV, respectively. Against UNLV, who is sitting in fifth place in the Mountain West standings with a 12-3 record overall, was, to this point, one of the Spartans’ toughest matchups. In that game, SJSU took UNLV to overtime after reeling back from a double digit deficit in the fourth quarter, though they eventually fell, 82-76, at home.

Men's Basketball: Lobos fall to Boise State, 90-62

A 4-minute scoring drought to begin the game proved to be a sign of what to come for the University of New Mexico men’s basketball team (6-10, 1-2 MW), as the Lobos were blown out by the Boise State Broncos (13-2, 3-0 MW), 90-62 in Boise, Idaho Wednesday night. Just 4 minutes into the game, the Broncos found themselves leading 13-0 before an Anthony Mathis 3-pointer finally opened the scoring for New Mexico, who came into the game with a four-game winning streak over Boise. Things never improved for New Mexico, and with 16.7 seconds left in the first half, Troy Simons and Boise’s Chandler Hutchinson were given technical fouls for their actions following a foul on New Mexico’s Chris McNeal.

Women’s Basketball: Lobos topple Boise State at home, remaining the only team perfect in conference play

The University of New Mexico women’s basketball team beat the Boise State Broncos, 100-83, at Dreamstyle Arena on Wednesday evening, improving the team to a perfect 3-0 in the Mountain West (the last team undefeated in conference play) and 15-1 overall. The 100 points scored against Boise State (8-6, 2-1 Mountain West) is the first 100-point game the Lobos have had since the inception of the Mountain West. UNM was led by senior guard Alex Lapeyrolerie, who had a career-high 23 points on an 8-for-15 shooting night, with five of those shots made coming from beyond the arc. Despite Lapeyrolerie’s performance on offense, four other Lobos scored in double digits. Junior post Jaisa Nunn scored 19 points, senior guards Cherise Beynon and Tesha Buck had 18 and 15, respectively, while freshman Antonia Anderson finished with 13 points.

Men’s Basketball: Lobos travel to Boise State

Coming off of a close loss at reigning Mountain West champion Nevada, the University of New Mexico men’s basketball team can start the new year off the right way: with a win over Boise State on the road on Wednesday evening. But it’ll be a tough task. The Broncos enter Wednesday’s contest with a perfect 2-0 record in conference play, and a 12-2 record overall. Most recently, the team picked up a victory on the road at UNLV, 83-74, in a game that saw senior guard Chandler Hutchison score 32 points and 12 rebounds. In that game, he was also a perfect 3-for-3 from range. Hutchison is also the Broncos’ leading scorer this season, averaging 17.5 points per game.

Women’s Basketball: Lobos to host Boise State

On Wednesday, the University of New Mexico women’s basketball team will host the Boise State Broncos, in a battle of the final two remaining teams unbeaten in Mountain West play. Boise State, so far this season, has posted an 8-5 record and a perfect 2-0 record in conference play. The Broncos’ first win in conference play came at Colorado State, a game they won 62-58, and their most recent win was against UNLV at home, where they won 69-60. For the Lobos, their most recent wins, both in Mountain West play, came on the road against Air Force, where they won in decisive fashion, 88-59. At home against Nevada, a game UNM was down by as many as 12 points rallied back with a big third quarter to win, 72-68, to move the team to a 14-1 record overall. Last season, the Broncos posted a 2-1 record over UNM. The Lobos’ lone win came at home, and their losses came on the road in Boise and the conference tournament opener in Las Vegas—a tournament the Broncos went on to win. Overall, UNM trails Boise State 6-10. And at Dreamstyle Arena, the series is split 3-3.

Women’s Basketball: Lobos narrowly defeat Nevada at home

It wasn’t pretty. And it certainly wasn’t easy. But the University of New Mexico women’s basketball team, with a resurgent second half, pulled out a narrow 72-68 victory over the visiting Nevada Wolf Pack on Saturday afternoon at Dreamstyle Arena. “Give Nevada a lot of credit,” UNM head coach Mike Bradbury said. “They are, one, very talented and two, extremely well-coached. ... That said, I’m very proud of our kids. I thought the last quarter and a half we really competed and found a way to win.” Nevada, (8-5, 1-1 Mountain West) by the half, had a four point advantage. And nearly halfway through the third quarter, the visiting team had a 12-point lead over the Lobos (14-1, 2-0 Mountain West). But a string of five 3s, in the last five minutes of the third quarter, helped the Lobos end the frame with a 52-48 lead. In the third quarter alone, senior guards Alex Lapeyrolerie and Tesha Buck each contributed two made 3-pointers, while freshman guard Madi Washington hit the other.
