Men’s Basketball: Solid second half helps Lobos surpass Mavericks

Behind blistering second half shooting, lead by Troy Simons’ 24 points, and 39 points off of turnovers, the New Mexico men’s basketball team overpowered Nebraska-Omaha, 103-71 on Tuesday night at Dreamstyle Arena, aka The Pit. The Lobos started the game strong, setting a fast pace of play for the Mavericks to try to match. University of New Mexico forward Sam Logwood put the first points of the game on the board, followed shortly by more points from the Lobos, four points were scored by forward Joe Furstinger. By the first media timeout five minutes into the game, the Lobos jumped out to a lead of 8-2 over Omaha.

Men's Basketball: UNM to host Nebraska-Omaha

The New Mexico men's basketball team throttled its opponent in the season opener and will look for a second-straight win to begin the season against Omaha. New Mexico (1-0, 0-0 MW) surged past Northern New Mexico on Saturday, Nov. 10, steam-rolling its way to a 147-76 triumph over the Eagles. Eight different Lobos scored in double figures as first-year Lobo head coach Paul Weir showed his willingness to implement a deep rotation. The head coach said each player was recruited to play a role on the team and it is essential to develop the young players throughout the season.

Women’s Basketball: Lobos upset No. 16 Marquette, improving the team to 2-0

On Monday night at the Pit with all 4,169 fans yelling in unison, “Everyone’s a Lobo,” the New Mexico women’s basketball team pulled off an improbable upset over the nationally-ranked Marquette Golden Eagles. Junior forward Jaisa Nunn — unquestionably the hero of the night — scored on a layup, drawing a foul in the process and made the subsequent free throw to elevate the Lobos to a huge win over the No. 16 team in the country, as the hometown team won in an 88-87 nail-biter. “Can’t say enough about and can’t say enough times that we have the absolute best fans in America,” Lobo head coach Mike Bradbury said immediately after his team’s win. “It says 4,169...4,200 — it felt like 42,000. That place was loud, and it made a huge, huge difference.”

Women’s Basketball: Lobos to host No. 17 Marquette

After defeating a very capable Western Michigan team for their season opener last Friday, New Mexico will once again have their hands full when they face No. 17 Marquette on Monday evening at Dreamstyle Arena, marking the second meeting between the two teams in the last two seasons. Just a season ago, the Lobos (1-0) made a visit to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where they fell to the Golden Eagles (0-0) 62-52. This time, though, Marquette will open their season on the road as they visit Albuquerque, to face a Lobos team that is on the up after winning their season opener. For New Mexico, three players managed to score in double digits against Western Michigan, in senior guards Cherise Beynon (24 points) and Tesha Buck (22 points), as well as junior forward Jaisa Nunn (18 points).

Men's soccer: Lobos title defense ends with disappointing 1-0 loss against Charlotte

Defending champions and No.5 seed University of New Mexico men’s soccer team ended their Conference USA Tournament title defense as they suffered a 1-0 quarterfinal loss to fourth seeded Charlotte in Norfolk, Virginia on Nov. 8. This was the second time the Lobos (8-6-4, 3-3-2 C-USA) played Charlotte (7-4-6, 2-1-5 C-USA) in a span of two weeks. The first match played in Albuquerque on Oct. 28, ended in a goalless draw that went into double overtime. A tie breaker was needed to settle the seeding between Charlotte and New Mexico. Both teams finished the regular season and earned 11 points in C-USA. Due to a better goal difference, Charlotte acquired a higher seed. The Lobos now await a NCAA Tournament at-large bid. Unless they receive the bid, the loss against Charlotte will mark the end of the Lobos regular season.

Cross Country: Women continue to roll, extending streak of NCAA Championship appearances

UNM cross country qualified its women’s team as well as an individual on the men’s side for the NCAA Championships next week after a solid showing at the Mountain Region Championships on Friday. The women’s race was won by UNM sophomore Ednah Kurgat, who took home an individual win for the fourth straight time despite the level of competition presumably rising each meet. She paced the field with a finishing time of 20:01.4 and seems to be primed for success and figures to be one of the top candidates with a shot at an individual win on the national stage on Friday.

Football: Losing streak hits five as Lobos were no match for Texas A&M

When a smaller school plays a major program, it often receives a hefty paycheck for what is likely to be a one-sided affair. Sometimes the underdog pulls off a major upset—but that was not the case for New Mexico on Saturday. UNM football received $1.1M to play against the Texas A&M Aggies—but probably feel like the paycheck was a little bit light after getting roughed up on national television. The Lobos (3-7, 1-5 MW) dropped the contest 55-14, though the score probably could've been worse if the Aggies didn't take their foot off the gas in the second half.

Men's Basketball: Lobos coast to easy victory over Northern New Mexico in season opener

The New Mexico men's basketball team saw marked improvement over its performance against BYU in last month's exhibition game, shooting the ball efficiently en route to a 147-76 whipping of Northern New Mexico. The 147 points was a program record for points scored in a single game and the 71 point margin of victory tied a school record as well. UNM (1-0, 0-0 MW) played harassing defense and forced turnovers to seize early control of the game and cruise to victory.

Football: Lobos travel to face Texas A&M with postseason hopes in the balance

The New Mexico football team needs three wins if it hopes to continue playing into the postseason, but the odds are stacked against the Lobos pulling off the feat as the team faces Texas A&M Saturday on the road. Texas A&M (5-4, 3-3 SEC) will be playing with bowl eligibility on the line, failing to complete the task last week in each of the last two weeks. First the Aggies were upended by Mississippi State 35-14, then fell to Auburn by a score of 42-27—both losses taking place at home on Kyle Field. The Aggies will likely want to handle business on Saturday against the Lobos, considering their next two games will be played on the road.

Women’s Basketball: Lobos win season opener, defeating Western Michigan

At times it was close. But the New Mexico women’s basketball team, with the help of senior guards Cherise Beynon and Tesha Buck, managed to take home the team’s first win of the season, beating the Western Michigan Broncos 88-76 at Dreamstyle Arena on Friday night. Questionable foul calls in the third quarter brought the Broncos (0-1) within striking distance, but a late fourth quarter surge, which saw the Lobos (1-0) finish by scoring the last three points of the game, all but sealed the Lobos’ win.

Audit on Athletics reveals hundreds of thousands in uncollected revenue and overpayments

The State Auditor released an audit Friday on the University of New Mexico Athletics Department, revealing the University has missed out on hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue, due to what the audit calls “a lack of financial controls and confusion about responsibilities among staff.” “A tangled web of transactions has made it difficult for the public, and even some of the financial staff at the University, to be able to decipher what is going on in the Athletics Department and the various supporting organizations,” State Auditor Tim Keller said in a press release after the audit was shared.

50 Ironman Triathlons, 50 states, 50 Days — “Iron Cowboy” James Lawrence speaks at University of New Mexico

James Lawrence, a world-class endurance athlete best known as the “Iron Cowboy,” spoke at the University of New Mexico advising the audience on how to achieve the unthinkable and succeed in achieving goals. “I’m going to share with you experiences that articulate a person’s ability to have so much (belief) and conviction in what they are doing and figuring out a way to accomplish something that is impossible or deemed impossible,” Lawrence said at the beginning of his speech. An Ironman Triathlon consists of 2.5 miles of swimming, 112 miles of biking and a 26.2-mile marathon. In 2015, Lawrence achieved the seemingly impossible feat of finishing 50 Ironman Triathlons in 50 states in 50 consecutive days, thus writing his name in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Women's Soccer: Lobos fall to San Diego State in conference finals

The New Mexico women's soccer team fell in the Mountain West Tournament championship to San Diego State on Saturday night in Las Vegas by a score of 3-0, as the hat trick of Aliyah Utush ended New Mexico’s season. Despite the lopsided final score line, the Lobos weren’t without scoring opportunities. In the 22nd minute, Amelia Bierle put a shot off the post and the crossbar, and the rebound fell to Jessie Hix, who put her shot wide. The first half of the match finished 0-0, with the Lobos leading 8-6 in shots. Statistically, the game was not as one-sided as the final score made it appear, and in many ways the match simply came down to who could take their chances better.

Volleyball: Lobos defeat San Jose State but fall to Nevada Wolf Pack

University of New Mexico volleyball had a mixed week at home, defeating San Jose State University in three close sets but getting stopped by the Nevada Wolf Pack in a four-set duel. In the first two sets against San Jose State, UNM posted scores of 25-22, and the third set was even tighter, with the Lobos edging out the Spartans 26-24. In the second matchup, Nevada took the first set 25-19, but UNM recaptured the second set 18-25. However, Nevada got by UNM 31-29 in the third set and scored 25-20 for the match victory. The Lobos last met the Spartans on Oct. 7 in San Jose, California, where they fell 2-3, but this time at home, they seemed ready for whatever their rival could throw at them.
