Men’s Basketball: Lobos to host Tennessee Tech in second round of Emerald Coast Classic

After a 19 point loss to New Mexico State on Friday in Las Cruces, the Lobos (2-1) will try to rebound with a win at home against the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles. As for TTU (3-1), they only have one loss on the season to Texas Christian University—a team that had received votes in national polls. More recently, though, the Golden Eagles are coming off a victory against Kennesaw State. In UNM’s loss to the Aggies last week, they were dominated on the board, being outrebounded by their rival 50-25 while 25 of those were NMSU offensive rebounds, ultimately leading to 23 second chance points. “Spent a lot of time on rebounding obviously since the New Mexico State game,” head coach Paul Weir said at a press conference on Monday. “Very troubling execution at that end of the floor as much as we want to tip our hat to them and they did a great job there, there’s a lot that we needed to clean up and that was pretty much yesterday’s practice and will be today’s practice as well.”

Women's Basketball: Nunn named Mountain West Player of the Week

In a week that saw junior post Jaisa Nunn break a Lobo record for points scored in a game, the Mountain West has named her the conference's Player of the Week, marking the second straight UNM player to do so this season. Senior guard Cherise Beynon picked up the accolade in the team’s first week, after nearly putting up triple-double in UNM’s season opener against Western Michigan. Nunn, who is in her third year playing for UNM and in her second under head coach Mike Bradbury, followed it up with a brilliant performance against Marquette, which was ranked No. 16 at the time.

Volleyball: 16-16 for the season with two wins and one loss

UNM Women’s volleyball completed their season in a week of intense play, routing UTEP and UNLV at home, but falling to the Air Force Academy in their final match. The Lobos now stand at 16-16 ( or .500) for the season and 7-11 in Mountain West play, which puts them 8th in conference rankings. This is the 10th season that Lobo volleyball has achieved at least .500 for the season in the 11 years that head coach Jeff Nelson has led the program. UNM started the week with a match against the University of Texas El Paso Miners at Johnson. Coming off a three game losing streak, the Lobos were desperately hoping to flip that script and they found a way to do just that. In the end the Lobos swept the Miners, who now stand at 6-22 for the season, in three straight sets, 25-16, 25-16 and 28-26. In a press release, redshirt junior Victoria Spragg said, "We've kind of been going up and down...so today was just a little redemption and showing ourselves and the fans that we can play volleyball”.

Football: No happy ending for UNM on "senior night" as the Lobos fall again

Senior quarterback Lamar Jordan looked to be in line to be the hero after he engineering a late go-ahead touchdown drive, but left too much time on the clock as UNLV crashed the party to snatch the victory on Friday night. New Mexico (3-8, 1-6 MW) was dealt its sixth consecutive loss, falling in its final home game of the season 38-35 to UNLV. UNLV scored on its first two possessions, taking a 10-0 lead about midway through the first quarter and it looked like the Lobos might be in trouble early.

Cross Country: New Mexico women back on top after winning 2017 NCAA Championship

New Mexico ended the season as champions again, picking up its second national championship in three years by capturing the 2017 NCAA Championship title in Louisville, Kentucky on Saturday. The women's cross country team is no stranger to performing at an elite level—having finished in seventh place at the same venue last season. In fact, the squad has finished in the top 10 for eight consecutive years after Saturday's performance, winning the whole thing in 2015. Head coach Joe Franklin said this year's squad was different, but the end result was the same as the Lobos stood atop the national cross country landscape with almost a completely different roster than two years ago.

Women’s Basketball: Lobos defeat NMSU at home, improving the team to 4-0

Unlike the men’s team, the University of New Mexico women’s basketball team defeated the New Mexico State Aggies, 86-75, on Saturday afternoon at Dreamstyle Arena, improving the team to an unblemished record four games into the season. The win, however, wouldn’t have been possible without the Lobos (4-0) jumping out to an 18 point lead at halftime, which was propelled by a 21-2 run early on.

Men’s Basketball: Aggies trample Lobos in 19 point victor in Las Cruces

LAS CRUCES, N.M. — No, the reception for former Aggie head coach and current Lobo incumbent Paul Weir wasn’t a pleasant one, as the Lobos visited the Aggies on Friday night. And no, the University of New Mexico didn’t get any love either from a hostile crowd at its rival’s home base. Ultimately, rebounding and second chance points from the Aggies — and especially guard Zach Lofton — helped elevate NMSU (2-1) to a comfortable 75-56 victory over UNM (2-1) at the Pan American Center in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

Women's Basketball: Lobos to host in-state foe New Mexico State for Rio Grande Rivalry game

Coming off of two hard fought victories against Western Michigan and a ranked Marquette team – as well as a win over NAIA school Northern New Mexico on Wednesday evening – the University of New Mexico women’s basketball team will face in-state rival New Mexico State at Dreamstyle Arena on Saturday afternoon. During the Lobos’ win against Marquette, junior forward Jaisa Nunn scored a program record of 39 points on a 14-of-15 shooting night. More recently, though, the Lobos scored a program record in points scored in a game, when they ran past NNMC 107-66 in a victory that saw freshman guard Madi Washington score a game high 27 points off the bench. As for NMSU (1-1), they enter Saturday splitting their season record during their first two games. In their season opener at home, they fell to the same Western Michigan team the Lobos (3-0) played two days prior, 64-55. And in their most recent outing, the Aggies defeated UT Permian Basin, 85-58.

Football: Lobos look to end five-game skid on "senior night" against UNLV

There will be no postseason for Lobo football this season, but UNM can still play the role of spoiler and deny UNLV an opportunity to become bowl eligible. New Mexico (3-7, 1-5 MW) has had a rough go of things over the last month or so, going winless in its last five games. The team has played especially poor on the road, but Saturday the Lobo will host the Rebels in the friendly confines of Dreamstyle Stadium. The Lobos have fared better at home, where the team has gone 2-3 so far this season. Two of those losses came by a combined five points, but UNM looked lost during its last game at home, a 24-10 loss to Utah State on Nov. 4.

Men's Basketball: Weir wants attention to be on student-athletes, not him, heading into Rio Grande Rivalry

The New Mexico versus New Mexico State rivalry has been going on for well over 100 years, but there will be a new wrinkle this time around as the Lobos will head to Aggie country with a coach some fans may not be thrilled to see back in the Pan American Center. First-year Lobo head coach Paul Weir said he didn't want to be the narrative of the story heading into the matchup against NMSU—the team he used to coach. But there will likely be plenty of focus on his return to Las Cruces, New Mexico and the reception he receives from the Aggie faithful. On one hand, he spent 10 years at New Mexico State, taking over as head coach for the school last season and guiding the team to a 28-win season. The Aggies won the Western Athletic Conference title and earned an NCAA postseason berth along the way.

Cross Country: Lobo cross country competing as one of the favorites in the field at 2017 NCAA Championships

The University of New Mexico Women’s cross country team will compete at the NCAA Championships for the 10th consecutive year — and as the No. 2 team in the country, have a legitimate shot at earning another national championship. Head coach Joe Franklin said this year's team has a lot of similarities to UNM's 2015 National Championship squad, but in many ways is very different. New Mexico seemed to blow through the competition in 2015, but both teams had a second-place showing at the Mountain Region Championships.

Women's Basketball: Lobos build momentum for third win of season with record-breaking performance

The University of New Mexico Lobos, behind the scoring of freshman guard Madi Washington, cruised to an easy 107-66 victory over Northern New Mexico Wednesday evening, marking a new program record for most points scored in a game. The former record of 106 points dates back to 1979 when the Lobos played Northern Arizona, but it is also the first time the Lobos have had a 100-point regular season game since 2005 when they played Morgan State.

Women’s Basketball: Lobos look ahead, host Northern New Mexico on Wednesday

It’s not a secret anymore: the University of New Mexico women’s basketball team is here to compete. Fresh off of an upset over No. 16 ranked Marquette on Monday, the Lobos (2-0) will host NAIA competitor Northern New Mexico (2-4) on Wednesday evening at Dreamstyle Arena. New Mexico’s victory on Monday night marked many monumental achievements for the program— including most points scored by a player in a game, the first time the Lobos defeated a ranked team since 2010 and the first time the Lobos beat a top-20 team since 2006.

The Lobos started the game strong, setting a fast pace of play for the Mavericks to try to match. University of New Mexico forward Sam Logwood put the first points of the game on the board, followed shortly by more points from the Lobos, four points were scored by forward Joe Furstinger. Men's Basketball: UNM to host Nebraska-Omaha

The New Mexico men's basketball team throttled its opponent in the season opener and will look for a second-straight win to begin the season against Omaha. New Mexico (1-0, 0-0 MW) surged past Northern New Mexico on Saturday, Nov. 10, steam-rolling its way to a 147-76 triumph over the Eagles. Eight different Lobos scored in double figures as first-year Lobo head coach Paul Weir showed his willingness to implement a deep rotation. The head coach said each player was recruited to play a role on the team and it is essential to develop the young players throughout the season.

Women’s Basketball: Lobos upset No. 16 Marquette, improving the team to 2-0

On Monday night at the Pit with all 4,169 fans yelling in unison, “Everyone’s a Lobo,” the New Mexico women’s basketball team pulled off an improbable upset over the nationally-ranked Marquette Golden Eagles. Junior forward Jaisa Nunn — unquestionably the hero of the night — scored on a layup, drawing a foul in the process and made the subsequent free throw to elevate the Lobos to a huge win over the No. 16 team in the country, as the hometown team won in an 88-87 nail-biter. “Can’t say enough about and can’t say enough times that we have the absolute best fans in America,” Lobo head coach Mike Bradbury said immediately after his team’s win. “It says 4,169...4,200 — it felt like 42,000. That place was loud, and it made a huge, huge difference.”

Women’s Basketball: Lobos to host No. 17 Marquette

After defeating a very capable Western Michigan team for their season opener last Friday, New Mexico will once again have their hands full when they face No. 17 Marquette on Monday evening at Dreamstyle Arena, marking the second meeting between the two teams in the last two seasons. Just a season ago, the Lobos (1-0) made a visit to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where they fell to the Golden Eagles (0-0) 62-52. This time, though, Marquette will open their season on the road as they visit Albuquerque, to face a Lobos team that is on the up after winning their season opener. For New Mexico, three players managed to score in double digits against Western Michigan, in senior guards Cherise Beynon (24 points) and Tesha Buck (22 points), as well as junior forward Jaisa Nunn (18 points).

Men's soccer: Lobos title defense ends with disappointing 1-0 loss against Charlotte

Defending champions and No.5 seed University of New Mexico men’s soccer team ended their Conference USA Tournament title defense as they suffered a 1-0 quarterfinal loss to fourth seeded Charlotte in Norfolk, Virginia on Nov. 8. This was the second time the Lobos (8-6-4, 3-3-2 C-USA) played Charlotte (7-4-6, 2-1-5 C-USA) in a span of two weeks. The first match played in Albuquerque on Oct. 28, ended in a goalless draw that went into double overtime. A tie breaker was needed to settle the seeding between Charlotte and New Mexico. Both teams finished the regular season and earned 11 points in C-USA. Due to a better goal difference, Charlotte acquired a higher seed. The Lobos now await a NCAA Tournament at-large bid. Unless they receive the bid, the loss against Charlotte will mark the end of the Lobos regular season.

Cross Country: Women continue to roll, extending streak of NCAA Championship appearances

UNM cross country qualified its women’s team as well as an individual on the men’s side for the NCAA Championships next week after a solid showing at the Mountain Region Championships on Friday. The women’s race was won by UNM sophomore Ednah Kurgat, who took home an individual win for the fourth straight time despite the level of competition presumably rising each meet. She paced the field with a finishing time of 20:01.4 and seems to be primed for success and figures to be one of the top candidates with a shot at an individual win on the national stage on Friday.

Football: Losing streak hits five as Lobos were no match for Texas A&M

When a smaller school plays a major program, it often receives a hefty paycheck for what is likely to be a one-sided affair. Sometimes the underdog pulls off a major upset—but that was not the case for New Mexico on Saturday. UNM football received $1.1M to play against the Texas A&M Aggies—but probably feel like the paycheck was a little bit light after getting roughed up on national television. The Lobos (3-7, 1-5 MW) dropped the contest 55-14, though the score probably could've been worse if the Aggies didn't take their foot off the gas in the second half.
