Baseball: UNM blanked in series finale against Missouri State Bears

The New Mexico baseball team took games one and two over Missouri State but could not complete the sweep, falling in the series finale at Santa Ana Star Field on Saturday. The Bears got out on top early and continued to play well-rounded baseball throughout the game en route to an 8-0 shutout victory – and its first over the Lobos this season. It was the first time the Lobos had been shutout on their home turf in 164 games. Missouri State’s starting pitcher, Doug Still, had his way with the Lobos, going the distance for a complete-game victory. He scattered five Lobo hits over his nine innings pitched, though he struck out just one batter. Still also benefitted from some phenomenal defensively play while on the hill.

Women's Basketball: UNM adds another addition to guard-heavy roster

The New Mexico women's basketball team continued to add to the roster, adding more depth at the guard position. The newest addition, Jasmine Smith of Houston, Texas, was made official on Thursday after her signed National Letter of Intent was received by the University of New Mexico. Smith is the fifth guard to be signed by head coach Mike Bradbury since November. She joined an incoming class that includes Jaedyn DeLaCerda, Madison Washington, Antonia Anderson and N’Dea Flye – all five new signees are comprised of entirely guards. In her senior year of high school, Smith helped lead her team to an impressive 33-5 record, posting an impressive stat line of 17.5 points, 4.1 assists and 3.3 steals per game.

Men's Soccer: Schedule change allows UNM to host Air Force

After a month-long break, the UNM men’s soccer team is ready to spring back into action. On the original schedule, the Lobos were going to hit the road to take on the Air Force Academy on Saturday. However, the scheduled was recently changed and the Falcons will travel to Albuquerque, New Mexico instead. The match will be one of just two home matches the Lobos have scheduled for the spring. Both of them will be played at the UNM Robertson practice facility instead of the UNM soccer complex, where all fall season matches are played.

Lobos to host UNLV and San Diego State in final home matches

UNM will be playing its final two home matches of the season against UNLV and San Diego State before finishing the regular season with four more conference matches before the conference tournament begins. With Conference wins against Nevada, Boise State, and Utah State, the Lobos (10-10, 3-1 MW) are now tied for first in the Conference with Fresno State and Utah State. All three sides have three wins and a loss. Nevada and UNLV are tied for fifth; having each won two matches and lost two matches. The rankings at the end of Conference play determine the seeding in the Mountain West Conference tournament; all eight of the conference teams will thus be fighting for the best conference rankings possible.

Lobos bounce back to win series opener against Missouri St

A potent late inning offense in Thursday's series opener at Santa Ana Star Field was all the University of New Mexico baseball team needed to secure a win. A strong sixth inning, which saw the Lobos (19-13-1, 11-2-1 MW) score six runs -- both scored in three runs a piece off of key hits -- tallied the final score in favor of the home team, 15-7. The game didn't play out into the Lobos' favor early on and, instead, saw a tight-knit game throughout five innings, before UNM grabbed the lead and never looked back in the bottom of the fifth.

Lobos aim to continue win streak at Blazer Beach Duals

The Lobo beach volleyball team will travel to Birmingham, Alabama this Friday and Saturday to compete in the Blazer Beach Duals. The pair of home victories last weekend over Colorado Mesa put the Lobos at (10-9) to give the team a winning record for the first time since the season opener. The season-high three-match winning streak definitely gave New Mexico confidence for this week’s four matches. “We should be playing at our best,” assistant coach Pauline Manser said in a release. "It’s important that we’re focused and go into this one with everything at our disposal and pushing as hard as we can to get all four wins.”

Baseball: Lobos overcome slow start to take lead, but ultimately fall to Red Raiders

The University of New Mexico baseball team couldn’t grab a win in Lubbock, Texas against No. 6 Texas Tech on Tuesday afternoon. Instead, the Red Raiders defended home turf and beat the Lobos decisively, 12-4. New Mexico was able to produce a lead in the top of the fourth inning, going up 4-3, but Texas Tech quickly recovered and tacked on a multitude of insurance runs in the latter innings of play. Texas Tech got on the score board first, tallying three runs in the bottom of the second inning, though its offensive production in that time was highlighted by a two RBI double from outfielder Cody Farhat to put the home team up 3-0.

Men's Basketball: Aggies head coach will replace Neal

The Rio Grande Rivalry has become more real than ever. After an 11-day search for a new men’s basketball head coach, Vice President for Athletics Paul Krebs decided that NMSU’s Paul Weir was the man for the job. Krebs said that although some people described the process as a bit of a roller coaster, he thought that from an internal perspective things actually went relatively smoothly. “We ended up where we needed to be,” he said. “The process allowed us to get to the right place to find the best individual, best coach, at this time for the University of New Mexico.”

Track and Field: Lobos expect solid performance at Bryan Clay Invitational

Going into the third week of its outdoor season, the Lobo track and field team will face top-notch competition this weekend at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, California. “It’s probably the best race prior to the championship season that will exist,” head coach Joe Franklin said of the coming meet. “We have people starting Wednesday and we’ll go from there and see how things go. We typically run very well here.” The Lobos posted 12 top-three finishes at the Bryan Clay Invite last year. Stellar marks in this early meet gave New Mexico the confidence to qualify 20 individuals to the NCAA Prelims in the championship season.

Lobos continue Mountain West Momentum

After beating Nevada last Sunday, the Lobos were eager to play away from home and challenge rivals Boise State and Mountain West powerhouse Utah State. The Lobos (10-10, 3-1 MW) played Boise State (5-20, 1-3 MW) on Friday in Boise, Idaho. The Lobos had beaten the Broncos earlier in the season 4-0, an emphatic result given that the two sides traditionally have close matches. With this fixture, the Broncos had an opportunity to exact their revenge and climb the Mountain West Standings. But UNM proved once again to be too much for Boise. The Lobos started off the match strong. The doubles pair of sophomore Ricky Hernandez-Tong and freshman Lawrence Perrin won their match 6-1 at the No. 1 position, and the doubles team of freshman Dominic West and junior Bart van Leijsen quickly followed up with a 6-4 win, gifting UNM the doubles point.

Lobos ready for round 2 against Red Raiders

After an unusual weekend of baseball for the University of New Mexico, the team will head back to Lubbock, Texas for a second time this season to take on the Red Raiders of Texas Tech. The Lobos (18-12-1, 11-2-1 Mountain West) participated in what was supposed to be a three-game series at San Jose State this past weekend, but instead found themselves playing two games – with Saturday's game being cancelled due to “inclement weather” a press release read – and Sunday's game ending in a 5-5 tie due to a “drop dead time” rule. In the Lobos’ series opener against San Jose State on Friday, the team lost 2-1, as they left 12 runners stranded on base and couldn't find a way to score more runs. Texas Tech (28-7, 6-3 Big 12) comes into Tuesday's game ranked no. 6 in both D1baseball.com and BaseballAmerica.com’s weekly rankings.

With solid individual performances, the Lobo outdoor track and field team continued to gain momentum from its second meet of the season on Saturday in Arizona. Both the men and women’s squads posted admirable team performance in the meet. The Lobos finished with two open titles, and 13 top-10 finishes in both open and premier events.

Baseball: Runs hard to come by on the road, Lobos drop a 2-1 decision to San Jose State

A late inning comeback wasn't in the works for Lobo baseball in game one of a three-game series at San Jose State. Instead, strong pitching from the Spartans’ bullpen stopped the Lobos from gaining control, as New Mexico (18-12, 11-2 Mountain West) fell, 2-1 on Friday night. The loss to San Jose State (12-17, 6-7 Mountain West) is UNM’s second conference loss this season – the first coming against Fresno State – and puts the team at a two-game losing streak. For the Spartans, the win marks their first against the Lobos this season after being swept last month in Albuquerque to start conference play.

Lobos to face Boise State and Utah as Conference play continues

After a mixed start to their 2017 Conference campaign, the Lobos will be hoping to reassert themselves as Conference contenders in the upcoming fixtures. The Lobos lost a close match at home to Fresno State last Friday, but bounced back two days later, beating Nevada 4-1 in a dominant display. UNM (8-10, 1-1 MW) will face Boise State (4-18, 1-2 MW) and Utah State (14-7, 2-0 MW) in their next pair of Conference fixtures; the Lobos beat the Broncos earlier in the season 4-0, but have yet to face Utah State. All three teams have Conference ambitions, and they know well that each match from now until the end of the season is crucial—and could potentially define the remainder of their season. Although not traditional rivals, Boise State and UNM have developed a rivalry over the last decade. They have encountered one another in the Conference tournament several times, and their matches are typically close with little to separate the two sides.

Lobos fall to another ranked opponent against San Diego

The Lobo baseball team couldn't capitalize when it had the chance in a single-game matchup at San Diego on Wednesday evening. UNM stranded 14 base runners on its way to a 7-2 loss at Fowler Park. Head coach Ray Birmingham seemed frustrated with how his team performed on offense, especially knowing that his team was in scoring position plenty of times – including two stints where the bases were loaded. “We had a lot of at-bats tonight,” Birmingham said in a press release. “I'm not real pleased about it and it's something we better fix before we start our series at San Jose State on Friday.”
