Men's Basketball: Brown's 27 leads New Mexico to win over Boise State

The UNM men's basketball team gifted Lobo fans a sweet 78-73 victory over Boise State on Valentine's Day. The Lobos pulled off a win over the Broncos, closing the gap between the two teams. With the win, New Mexico is now only half a game behind Boise State, with slipped to second place in the Mountain West with the loss, behind the Colorado State Rams. Thanks to a persistent defense and several Lobos stepping up in the offensive side of the affair, New Mexico improved to 16-10 overall, and 9-5 in the Mountain West.

Women's Basketball: Lobos ready to ball despite suffering another season-ending injury

ACL tears are nobody’s best friend, but another one hit the University of New Mexico women's basketball team again, ending the season for a key player. Freshman guard Mykiel Burleson – who had started 22 of the 24 games the Lobos played in this season – suffered an ACL tear last Wednesday when the Lobos took on Air Force at WisePies Arena. Head coach Mike Bradbury gave the news during Monday's weekly press conference, and his words seemed filled with disappointment. “I mean, it hurts,” Bradbury said. “We've now lost three of our top eight, two of our top four. So yeah, it hurts.”

Men's Tennis: Bad weather extends Lobos' play in California after strong start

The New Mexico tennis team eased their way through day one of their weekend matches in California, but a force of nature would delay the momentum, as well as more victories on the court. The Lobos (1-5) started off strong against Cal Poly (4-2), winning the doubles point without having to finish all three doubles matches. The UNM doubles pair of freshman Dominic West and junior Bart Van Leijsen won 7-6 (6) against seniors Tim Tan and Garrett Auproux on court two. On court three, the New Mexico duo of senior Rodolfo Jauregui and junior Sean Baklini beat junior Karl Enander and freshman Antoine Noel 6-4.

Men's Basketball: Lobos look to make up ground in the conference against No. 1Boise State

The Lobos have a date with the top team in the Mountain West on Valentine’s Day, and they are even wearing special outfits for the occasion. After pulling a 74-67 win at Air Force last week, the UNM men’s basketball team returns to WisePies Arena for Lobos Love Pink, an event that aims to help spread breast cancer awareness. The team will wear white jerseys with pink lettering, which will be auctioned off post-game to raise money for the UNM Cancer Center. It won’t be an easy match as the opponents for the night are the Boise State Broncos, who find themselves at the top of the conference standings with a 16-7 overall record, including 9-3 in conference. The Lobos sit in fourth place with a 15-10, 8-5 MW record, but are just a game and a half away from the top spot.

Football: Season ticket prices to drop for 2017

The University of New Mexico announced Friday that season ticket prices for the upcoming football season will be reduced by 10 percent across the board. Head coach Bob Davie said he has appreciated the support from Lobo fans and feels everyone should focus on the people that show up to see the team play, instead of trying to figure out why there are more fans in the stands. But he said he would surely welcome more filled seats, and the University is making a targeted effort to boost attendance.

The report said Lt. Tim Stump of UNMPD confirmed a case involving an alleged sexual assault, but did not release the names of those involved.

With the start of the 2017 season less than a week away for the University of New Mexico baseball team, the expectations set by both the team and the Mountain West Conference has never been higher, as well as the pressure. After being named the preseason favorites to win the Mountain West title by coaches around the conference, some Lobos believe that they are capable of going even further. “You always have to have those high expectations,” junior infielder Carl Stajduhar said of the Lobos being predicted to win the Mountain West.

Holm loses title fight in controversial fashion

UFC 208’s main event — a newly formed featherweight title fight between Germaine de Randamie and Albuquerque’s own Holly Holm — didn't pan out the way the former champion expected. On Saturday night, Holm lost a unanimous decision, 48-47, to de Randamie (7-3) in a highly controversial ending. Illegal shots after the bell were fired off by de Randamie at the end of rounds two and three. But neither instance resulted in a point deduction or disqualification.

The Lobos (1-4) are coming off of an impressive 4-0 victory against Boise State (1-6). The Lobos have developed a rivalry with the Broncos and will be hoping to carry the momentum from that match into the weekend. Cal Poly (2-2) also recently played Boise State, winning 6-1 back on January 23rd. But the Mustangs are coming off of a 7-0 loss to Oregon, and have so far been unable to put together consecutive wins.

The win improved the Lobos’ record to 15-10 overall and 8-5 in the Mountain West conference, and dropped Air Force to 15-10, 8-5 MW. Several factors played a role in New Mexico’s success. “We didn't turn the ball over tonight," UNM head coach Craig Neal said in a release. "We made timely shots and made some threes."

Track and field: Lobos host Don Kirby Invitational, eyeing big competitions

“We want to make progress, get some people slowly climbing the ladder on the conference rankings, and get prepared for the conference championships.” Joe Franklin, head coach of the New Mexico track and field team, had that to say on Tuesday, leading up to the Lobos’ fourth straight home meet of the season. New Mexico will host the Don Kirby Invitational this Friday and Saturday at the Albuquerque Convention Center. The goal for the team for the last home meet before the Mountain West Championships is an obvious one — post as many qualifying marks as possible.

Women's Basketball: UNM can't afford to look ahead

The Lobo women's basketball team might be in third place in the Mountain West standings, but the team still has zero room for error—at least, that's what head coach Mike Bradbury seems to believe. “I don't think we're good enough to look past anybody,” Bradbury said in response to whether Air Force will be a test for them Wednesday night. “I think we've made that clear to our team. I don't think we have any more talent than Air Force has.” The Lobos (13-10, 8-4 MW) are entering Wednesday night’s contest at WisePies Arena 18-0 at home against Air Force, while also leading the all-time series with a dominating 38-2 mark. Air Force is 3-17 and 1-9 in the Mountain West thus far, but still poses an offensive threat against the Lobos.

Last February, head coach Jeremy Fishbein and the rest of the Lobo men’s soccer staff got what Top Drawer Soccer ranked as the fifth-best recruiting class in the country. The head coach said he feels just as confident about this year’s signings. Four new players signed National Letters of Intent and will be ready to join the University of New Mexico in the fall: Nick Barreiro, Bailey Letherman, Nicolas Taylor and Alex Vedamanikam “Every class you bring in is an A+, you gotta believe that,” Fishbein said. “You believe in theses guys, you’re excited. They are our future, so yeah, I think they are all going to be stars. You don’t bring them in if you don’t feel they are capable of that.”

Women's Soccer: Lobos sign 13 players for the 2017 season

Wednesday’s national letter of intent signing day was an eventful one for UNM women’s soccer, adding 13 new potential players to their roster. Future Lobos Brianna Rudolph, Madison Hirschman, Delaney Markham, Bella Starkweather, Kate Browning and Leilani Baker are all from New Mexico high schools. The duo of Brianna Rudolph and Madison Hirschman finished their high school careers with Eldorado while Delaney Markham and Kate Browning played for rival school La Cueva. Bella Starkweather played for Hope Christian and Leilani Baker ended her high school career at Rio Rancho. The heavy in-state recruitment demonstrates UNM head coach Heather Dyche’s faith in New Mexico youth soccer, which has produced many current and ex-Lobo players.

Women's Basketball: New Mexico uses big 3rd quarter to blow past San Jose State

A halftime deficit wasn't going to stop the University of New Mexico women's basketball team from bringing home a win on Saturday afternoon as one Lobo put up a career high in points. Senior center Richelle van der Keijl notched a career-high 31 points as New Mexico (13-10, 8-4 MW) clinched another conference win, 82-72, on the road over San Jose State (7-15, 4-6 MW). She also reeled in 13 rebounds, giving her a double-double – her seventh of the season. Lobo junior guard Cherise Beynon scored a good amount from the floor, too, putting up 18 points against San Jose State, on 7-of-15 shooting.
