Men's Tennis: Lobos face-off against No. 6 UCLA

The UNM men’s tennis team went winless in Nona, Florida to start the season, but seem optimistic as it travels to the other coast Saturday. New Mexico went 0-3 against some stiff competition a couple of weekends ago, falling to No. 23 Texas Tech, Arizona and Central Florida, although head coach Ben Dunbar said the matches were much closer than the score indicated. He said the team lost three close matches against really good opponents, but they competed hard and saw some good things. “The guys are going to get better from the experiences we’ve had—we’re right there.” Dunbar said.

New Mexico(13-8, 6-3 MW) took a 74-61 victory over Utah State Tuesday night, putting the team just half a game away from a first place standing in the conference. “We improved (Tuesday),” head coach Craig Neal said. “We are continuing to take one step forward. Men's Basketball: Streaking Lobos seeks revenge against team trending the other way

Two weeks ago the Lobos were mired in the middle of a three-game losing stretch and on Tuesday, New Mexico will get a shot at redemption as it plays host to the team that started that streak. The Utah State Aggies hosted the Lobos on Jan. 4 and handed them a 79-75 loss. UNM head coach Craig Neal and the team have moved on from that loss, but recognize the opponents are still a threat. “I thought we played very well there the first time,” Neal said. “I like their team, they have a very really good player in (freshman) Koby McEwen,, he is a really good point guard. They’ve changed their lineup a little bit. Jalen Moore could be a first-team all-league player.”

Women’s Soccer: Lynch eyes strong final season as a Lobo

To say that junior Albuquerque native Claire Lynch has had a successful UNM soccer career would be an understatement, and the best could be yet to come as she prepares for her final collegiate season. In her freshman season for the Lobos, she made 15 appearances and was the team’s top scorer with four goals. Impressively, three of those four goals were game winners, two of which came against Boise State. As a sophomore, Lynch’s role began increasing, making 20 appearances and 18 starts. She scored another game-winning goal against Colorado College on Oct. 23, 2015 and registered five goals for the season. Lynch increased her scoring total to eight goals this past season, including a superb long-ranged shot against the Nevada Wolfpack last Oct. 7.

Track and field: Lobos dominate at Cherry & Silver Invitational

“This is a huge jump. I feel really good.” UNM track and field jumper Jannell Hadnot had that to say in a release after defending her triple jump title at the Cherry & Silver Invitational at the Albuquerque Convention Center on Saturday. Her victory was just part of a near perfect season debut for the Lobo track and field team: 26 Lobos earned top 10 finishes in the competitive field. Although the Lobos just got back together as a team to train days ago, their solid performance exceeded even head coach Joe Franklin’s expectations. “There was a lot of positives for being here for literally four days and then coming out and racing,” head coach Joe Franklin said in a release.

Women's Basketball: Lobos hit road to face top Mountain West team

The UNM women's basketball team will travel to face Wyoming for a chance at another three-game winning streak on Saturday. New Mexico (9-8, 5-2 MW) has seemed to find its rhythm again. The team took an 84-71 win over the Colorado State Rams and an 81-70 triumph over the Boise State Broncos, teams that are known for being difficult to beat at home. Lobo head coach kept the answer simple when asked how he felt after his team’s successful trips. “Good,” he said. “It feels good. Happy for the kids.” New Mexico (11-8, 4-3 Mountain West) became the only team in conference history to successfully take down San Diego State, Colorado State and Boise State on the road in a single season.

Women's Basketball: Lobos use several runs to prevent Boise State comeback bid

The Lobos evaded some potent offense and a near-comeback bid from Boise State to walk out of WisePies Arena victorious on Wednesday night. Sophomore guard Alex Lapeyrolerie, who normally comes off the bench, got the start and made the most of her opportunity. When the Broncos got within striking distance late, she sunk a huge mid-range jumper with less than a minute remaining. That shot, as well as some timely free throw shooting, helped seal the victory. New Mexico (9-8, 5-2 MW) walked away with a 75-68 win to get back on the right side of .500 and strengthen its footing in the Mountain West conference, where the Lobos are third in the standings.

Women's Basketball: Lobos try to snap two-game skid in home tilt vs Broncos

The University of New Mexico women's basketball team will have its hands full on Wednesday night in WisePies Arena, as they host the Boise State Broncos. New Mexico (8-8, 4-2 Mountain West) will enter the game coming off a crushing home loss against Colorado State – a team that drained 18 three-pointers to take a decisive 78-63 victory, despite the Lobos leading in almost every statistical category. The defeat put the Lobos back at an even .500 for the season and on a two-game losing streak. Both losses were critical as they came against in-conference opponents.
