Men's Soccer: Lobos take on No. 13 Indiana to open season

When it comes to their season opener, the Lobos aren’t cautiously wading into the water, they are diving in head first. The UNM men’s soccer team will travel to South Bend, Indiana to face the Indiana University Hoosiers, a team that is currently ranked at No. 13. This is part of the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament weekend. The Lobos play Indiana on Friday and Notre Dame on Sunday.

However, instances of two-quarterback play may have occurred more often than one might think—especially in recent history. As recently as last season, defending champion Ohio State entered the season with a similar conundrum.

Volleyball: Lobos sweep only preseason competition

Former New Mexico stars took to Johnson Gym on Saturday night in the first showcase of this year’s 2016-2017 squad. Though the stats and competition won’t officially start counting until Friday afternoon, when the Lobos take on Abeline Christian, head coach Jeff Nelson got the performances he was looking for during his team’s 4-0 sweep over the Alumnae team.

Soccer: Defense doesn't allow a single goal in preseason

A lone goal and a strong defense helped the Lobos in a 1-0 victory over the University of Washington Huskies for their third and final preseason match on Saturday. Senior forward Niko Hansen banged in his fourth goal of the week with just six minutes remaining on the clock. This game-winner was also his 11th goal in 2016, as he scored seven in the spring.

Volleyball: Tough road begins with Cherry vs. Silver

A rigorous 2016 schedule for UNM's volleyball squad begins on Saturday with an annual alumnae game, the program's only exhibition match of the season. Former players representing a myriad of eras of the program will partake in the preseason affair, as the Lobos get ready to host their first tournament of the year beginning on August 28.

Men's Soccer: Lobos remain unblemished in preseason

Two down, one to go. The Lobos finished their second exhibition match with a 4-0 shutout victory over the Fort Lewis Skyhawks on Thursday morning. The Lobos were coming off of a 3-0 win against the UNLV Rebels earlier this week, which allowed UNM to enter Thursday’s match with confidence.

The UNM volleyball squad is poised for a good year, despite losing vital players in the middle block and at the setter position. There will be no replacing Hannah Johnson, the quarterback of the group, and the leader for such a long amount of time. However, head coach Jeff Nelson said the Lobo attack is going to be fierce with four seniors on the outside.

The first night back on the pitch also became the first shutout victory of preseason for the Lobos. UNM took down the UNLV Rebels 3-0 on Monday during the first of three exhibitions the Lobos will be playing this week.

Track and Field: Frerichs' stint in Rio ends with 11th place finish

Former Lobo Courtney Frerichs helped propel the United States to an impressive finish in her event at the 2016 Summer Olympics. All three of the U.S. women placed in the top 11, but it was Ruth Jebet of Bahrain who ran away from the field. She outdistanced her competition by over seven seconds, winning the women’s 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 8:59.75.

By Robert Maler Seeing a favorite team or alma mater take the field is all the incentive most college football fans need to go out to a game, but New Mexico's faithful fans can start looking forward to some additional benefits that aim to enhance the game day experience in 2016. The New Mexico football season kicks off in less than three weeks, with its home opener against South Dakota on Thursday, Sept. 1.

Men's Soccer: Strong spring season hopes to translate to fall

If the fall exhibition season is anything like the spring, the UNM men’s soccer team will be in good shape. Less than a week into their official fall training, the Lobos are getting ready to begin the preseason. They will get three matches over three dates, starting with University of Nevada Las Vegas on Monday, continuing with Fort Lewis on Thursday and finishing with Washington on Saturday.

New Mexico football has named its four team captains for the upcoming season, and the selections are unprecedented in more ways than one. The team elected senior linebacker Dakota Cox, safety Daniel Henry and the two starting quarterbacks from last season, Austin Apodaca and Lamar Jordan.

Women's Soccer: Cherry takes down SIlver in first action of the year

Divided into two separate teams, the University of New Mexico women’s soccer team stepped on the field for their first game action of the year on Thursday night. In the intrasquad scrimmage, Cherry ended up defeating Silver by a 3-2 count. The entire team was in attendance besides head coach Heather Dyche.

Men's Soccer: Lobos look to right the ship in 2016

After a long summer break, players and coaches returned to Robertson Field for the first official Lobo men’s soccer practice of the season on Wednesday morning. “I’ve been anxiously awaiting today and came away feeling great. I really like this team,” said head coach Jeremy Fishbein. “Energy levels were good today. The players where fit, sharp, unified. All you could ask for, for a first practice.”
