Grad students question child care policy

UNM graduate students with children cannot receive child care subsidies from the state, according to current New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department policy. Lissa Knudsen, Graduate and Professional Student Association council chairwoman, said she is concerned with the issue because it is preventing many students with children from attending graduate school.

Paint, water fight colors Holi festival

Four tents, a dozen squirt guns and more than 50 students chasing each other with paint and water balloons - the India Students Association celebrated Holi in style Saturday. "It's the Festival of Colors," said Krishna Chaitanya, president of the ISA. "There's no festival quite like it in the United States.

J.R. Giddens planted his seeds in The Pit. Now, all those seeds have finally germinated into a garden - the TD Banknorth Garden, that is. Giddens, who was picked by the newly-christened champion Boston Celtics, was selected 30th in the first round of the 2008 NBA Draft.

Editor, As the price of gas rises steadily to $5 per gallon, Parking Services has done city bus commuters a disservice by eliminating traditional pick-up and drop-off points at the newly constructed roundabout, located near the hospital at Yale and Lomas boulevards.

UNM grad remembered as 'open to the world'

UNM students remember John Smeltzer for his humor, quality of character and friendship. Smeltzer graduated with a bachelor's in political science, French, Spanish and European studies in May. He died in June, reportedly from a heart attack. According to UNM's Office of International Programs and Studies, a memorial service is not yet scheduled.

Camp teaches music, teamwork

Sociology graduate student Rocky Clay Eagon is spending his summer starting up a nonprofit organization to help children learn music and teamwork. The first project of the Musical Institute for Children will be Eagon's rock and roll camp for kids between 8 and 18.

University experiments with shorter workweek

Some full-time UNM employees worked only four days last week. That's because UNM announced June 12 that employees would have the option to work 10-hour days, rather than the standard eight hours, to cut back on gas consumption. In the pilot plan, employees would work four 10-hour days and have a three-day weekend.

UNM graduate dies on Spain trip

Staff Report Recent UNM graduate John "Wolfie" Smeltzer died June 13 in Barcelona, Spain. He was 24. He collapsed due to a massive heart attack while touring near the "Mountain of Steps" in the Olympic Village area, according to UNM spokeswoman Susan McKinsey.

The Humanist Society of New Mexico and its UNM chapter aim to teach social responsibility through education and discussion. Harry Willson, an author and member of the state chapter of the Humanist Society, said the philosophy of humanism emphasizes reason, science and human interests and often rejects the importance of belief in God.

Column: In defense of the night owl

Our night-owl culture is officially under attack. There's no denying it now. The evidence is solid. We can no longer pretend there isn't a problem. Reading, playing on the computer and drinking and smoking all night with friends does in fact have a negative impact on our academic performance.


Former UNM pitcher Stephen Smith recently signed a free-agent contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Smith is in Florida working out with the Gulf Coast League Dodgers.

Former UNM pitcher Stephen Smith has finally gotten the proverbial monkey off his back, as Smith signed a free-agent contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers. "It was a relief," he said. "Finally, actually getting to sign a contract after playing baseball for four years (in college) and not getting anything until my fourth year.

Column: Jackson is still no Auerbach

Self-contemplation is fundamental in the practice of Zen. Maybe we all need to contemplate: Is the Zen Master overrated? Before the NBA Finals began, the discussion was: Is Phil Jackson the greatest coach in NBA history? Better than Red Auerbach, who coached the Boston Celtics from 1950-1967, winning nine NBA championships at the helm? It seems we have a definitive answer to that question - no.

Column: Just down the highway

Madrid, N.M., is a unique destination, to say the least. The town, originally founded in the 1800s as a coal mining town, is now an artist's haven - a hippie enclave of sorts. And that's an interesting mix. Rediscovered in the 1960s and '70s, the town provided artists an escape from the "touristy and overpopulated" Santa Fe and Taos, one gallery owner said.

Chartwells deserves praise for improving vegan options

Editor, In response to your article, "Incoming food vendor makes changes at UNM," I would like to compliment the Dining Services department for taking the requests of their students so seriously. It was wonderful to see that Chartwells District Manager Rudy Simchak recognizes the importance of expanding the vegetarian and vegan options on campus, since there is a growing demand for these products nationwide.

Coldplay Viva La Vida, or Death and All His Friends Available Now Coldplay's latest album is a return to formula for the London band. Producer Brian Eno seems to have held back some of the excesses of Colplay's previous effort, X&Y, and allowed the band to put together an album that has a sound much closer to its first two albums.

Board looks to expand student housing

The Board of Directors of the Lobo Development Corporation met for the first time June 18 and is looking to expand the amount of on-campus housing UNM can offer. A market analysis identified the demand for an additional 1,200 beds for undergraduate students and 500 beds for graduate students, according to UNM.
