After a pickup game of basketball one afternoon, UNM student Marcus Bustos' life was changed forever. He was sore and weak after the game, and the pain didn't fade. He visited a doctor and had blood work done. The spring of his freshman year, Bustos was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia.
The Board of Regents approved a 3 percent increase in faculty pay last week, but the Faculty Senate said that's not enough. The organization asked the regents in February for a 6 percent increase, which would make faculty compensation competitive with peer institutions, said Jacqueline Hood, president of the Faculty Senate.
April 3 A UNM Police officer was dispatched to the Children's Psychiatric Center after a patient's family member threatened a receptionist. The receptionist said she told the patient's family they had an appointment at 8 a.m., and if they were more than 20 minutes late, they would have to reschedule.
Editor, It greatly saddened me to read the letter by Peter Lynch published in the Daily Lobo on April 9. I do believe the Daily Lobo made the right decision by publishing it, for any person deserves the right to express his or her opinion. However, I am saddened that after nearly seven months, there is still animosity in the air over this incident.
Editor, In a letter published in the Daily Lobo on Monday concerning Chinese and Tibetan people, the phrase "brutal suppression of minorities" in reference to Israel and Palestinians caught my attention. I want to pose the question: Who is suppressing whom? Hamas and other Palestinian terrorists in Gaza have fired more than 400 rockets and mortar shells into Israel since the beginning of January.

Editor, I find it disconcerting that Vicki Johnson wrote another letter likening Israel to China published in the Daily Lobo on Monday. Her response to criticism is particularly insulting. She suggests that those who disagree with her only do so because they have been socialized into a system that somehow parallels the Chinese Communist Party propaganda.
State imposes restrictions in face of high fire danger SANTA FE (AP) - The state is putting restrictions on campfires, open fires, smoking and fireworks in 23 of New Mexico's 33 counties starting Friday. Restrictions are being imposed because of high winds, low humidity and low precipitation that have increased fire danger across the state.
Editor, I have been found guilty of a petty misdemeanor and received a stern punishment despite the fact that I attempted repeatedly to apologize and replace the Mexican flag. I ask that action be taken against the criminal act that provoked me, that of breaking a federal law.

UNM head football coach Rocky Long said his team goes through cycles of experience and youth - and 2008 happens to be a year where inexperience will rule. So that makes the spring season, which begins this week, that much more important if the Lobos are going to continue to make strides in the program.
When Martha Bedard took over as dean of University Libraries a year ago, one of her goals was to extend the hours of UNM's libraries. She's one step closer thanks to a $200,000 allocation in the budget for the 2008-09 fiscal year. Bedard said getting funding is the first step in the process.
President David Schmidly discussed the future of UNM during a Web cast Tuesday. Students, staff and faculty tuned in and watched the Web cast around campus. About 15 people watched the Web cast in the SUB Theater. Schmidly said UNM must become a role model for higher education.
If Aramark employees want to continue working at UNM, they will need to apply to the new food-service company. About 200 food-service employees can stay and work for Chartwells or relocate to another location served by Aramark. In March, the Board of Regents unanimously voted to give the University's food-service contract to Chartwells, choosing not to renew an eight-year contract with Aramark.

Senior tailback Rodney Ferguson enjoyed a fine season in 2007, rushing for 1,177 yards and 13 touchdowns for the UNM football team. But the then-junior missed the biggest game of the season, failing to participate in the New Mexico Bowl due to academic ineligibility.
