The Department of Theatre and Dance is UNM’s best-kept secret. “Meta Morph,” this year’s faculty dance show, will provide a glimpse into what the dance program has to offer, said Donna Jewell, department head and artistic director. “There’s a lot of talent in the Department of Theatre and Dance,” Jewell said.
The 82nd Annual Academy Awards are quickly approaching, and while main contenders like “Avatar” and “The Hurt Locker” are basking in the media’s speculative limelight, there are always nominees that slip through the cracks.

UNM’s fraternities and sororities are shaking off the winter blues with some old-fashioned philanthropy. This year’s Greek Week is Disney-themed and benefits Best Buddies New Mexico, Watermelon Mountain Ranch and the Albuquerque Rio Grande Zoo. Alex Roark, organizer of the event, said the week provides an incentive for Greek collaboration. “Greek Week is just one of the only times out of the whole year where the entire Greek community gets together to do several events,” she said.
The second contender for the School of Engineering’s dean was on campus Monday to outline his intentions for the school, whose dean stepped down in July. Patrick O’Shea, University of Maryland’s chairman of Electrical and Computer Engineering, held two forums with students, faculty and staff. O’Shea said he would focus on increasing the department’s exposure to attract donors and increase national ranking. “The key thing when it comes to department ranking is simply making sure department chairs respect and recognize the things that are going on,” he said.
If you can’t get a Subway sandwich after dark, blame the city’s crime rate. The Subway at the corner of Girard Boulevard and Central Avenue has stopped accepting cash after 8 p.m., because it has been robbed twice since the beginning of the year, store owner Leticia Bernal said.

Never in her wildest dreams did Sandy Fortner envision the last year of her college career to be such a wild and bumpy ride. Fortner, a Fort Sumner native, returned to the top of the peak at the Mountain West Conference Indoor Championships during the women’s high jump on Friday at the Albuquerque Convention Center. After busting her kneecap last year, Fortner broke her own UNM school record with an NCAA qualifying score of 4,147.
As humdrum stories go, this one seemed to have an especially foreseeable conclusion. As expected, Lee Emanuel, the defending NCAA indoor mile champion, glazed the one-mile field of competitors at the Mountain West Conference Indoor Championships inside the Albuquerque Convention Center Saturday, racing to first place with a time of 4:05.85 (4:00.53 altitude-adjusted) and smashing the previous Mountain West Conference record of 4:10.04.
