Student Health Center faces expected H1N1 vaccine shortage

The Student Health and Counseling center only has 50 H1N1 vaccinations to ration between about 25,000 students. Vaccinations for the entire student body of UNM were expected to arrive in early October, but there’s already a month delay and still no clear distribution date in sight, said Beverly Kloeppel, director of SHAC. The H1N1 vaccine shortages are nationwide, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention Web site, and New Mexico has received only 0.48 percent of vaccines made in the U.S.

Taking steps toward shared governance

The Provost’s Office is trying to discern faculty members’ opinions on their stake in University governance. Provost Suzanne Ortega announced at the regents’ meeting Tuesday that her office would conduct a survey among faculty — many of whom are concerned about their role in UNM’s shared governance — to collect baseline data on faculty’s views on decision-making roles at the University before any changes are made.

Former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson has favored legalization of marijuana since he held office before Bill Richardson. Johnson, a Republican, was an advocate for drug policy reform and decriminalization of marijuana while he served as governor from 1994 to 2002.

Locksley incident brings policy shift

UNM President David Schmidly is recommending changes in Human Resources and University Counsel policies in light of the media outcry after head football coach Mike Locksley’s Sept. 20 physical altercation and the investigation that followed. Schmidly sent a letter to Athletics Director Paul Krebs recommending that the HR representative in the Athletics Department report to the University’s Division of Human Resources.

Eclectic art pieces form eerie harmony

Artists seldom share a gallery, so when seven do, and they do it well, something special is going on. The show, titled “I Always Know What to Say,” features the work of seven students in an advanced interdisciplinary studio class. The exhibit will be in the John Sommers Gallery, on the second floor of the Art Building, until Friday.

Lobos crashed Eastern New Mexico at the exhibition game

That’s all, folks. Eastern New Mexico had a puncher’s chance that is, until the UNM women’s basketball team threw a haymaker. The Lobos manhandled the Zias in their lone exhibition game, 100-52. Although the dress rehearsal is supposed to be easy, head coach Don Flanagan said he saw things that needed some tweaking before the Lobos’ regular season-opener on Friday against Northern Colorado. “I am probably going to get a little bit negative now,” Flanagan said.

Green, a sophomore, showed the Lobos won’t be without talent next season, even though UNM is losing five seniors, all of whom played their last home game on Saturday during Senior Night at the UNM Soccer Complex.

Seniors go out with a bang at final home game

Saturday was a night to remember for the UNM volleyball team. Not only did the Lobos bid a fond farewell to seniors Anna Lehne, Rose Morris and Allie Suiter, who were playing in their final home matches, but the team also avenged an earlier 3-0 loss to BYU, this time coming out on top 25-23, 25-17, 25-23 at Johnson Gym. With the win, UNM moved into fourth place in Mountain West Conference race at 18-8 overall and 9-5 in conference.

The UNM women’s tennis team showed noticeable improvement this weekend at the Southwest Collegiate Invitational at the UNM Tennis Complex. Despite being hampered by injuries to junior Ashley Bonner and freshman Amy Shipperd, the Lobos had a combined 17 wins.

All that the Lobos accomplished this season has been overshadowed by the debacle that went down in Provo, Utah, on Saturday. Elizabeth Lambert will be ascribed a reputation that likely isn’t “indicative of her character” or what she necessarily deserves.
