Run for president if you want to change how Obama lives

Editor, I would like to respond to a letter that was published on Feb. 12 by Daniel Martinez titled "Obama a hypocrite for asking CEOs to reduce their salaries." His complaint is of President Barack Obama asking major corporate CEOs to put limits or caps on their salaries and comparing the position of the presidency to that of a corporate CEO.

Faculty votes no confidence in Schmidly, Koch, Harris

About 500 faculty members met in Popejoy Hall on Wednesday to discuss and vote on five motions regarding the way the University is run. Each motion required 50 percent of the vote to pass, and the faculty passed all of them. The faculty have resolved: 1) To request an external audit of the University's finances to establish where educational funds have been spent in the last six years.

Faculty presents motion to oust regents president

The faculty meeting fell on Ash Wednesday, and biology professor Maggie Werner-Washburne was quick to draw a connection between the events. "It's a reminder to all of us that redemption is possible and that miracles are possible," she said. However, Werner-Washburne didn't hold out much hope for the University if faculty did not issue a vote of no confidence in Regents President Jamie Koch.

Dances with nations

This weekend's openers for Global Dance Fest 2009 will appeal to artists across the board, Danish choreographer Palle Granhoj said. "My kind of dance performances are much more for people outside the dance community than people inside the dance community," Granhoj said.

'Coraline' engaging, visually elegant

Yeah, it has been out for three weeks now and has already made more than $50 million at the box office, but let me tell you about a movie called "Coraline." Based on the children's novel by British author and equally British screenwriter Neil Gaiman, "Coraline" is the latest production from the eye-popping, jaw-dropping, belly-flopping, hip-hopping, stop-motion works of animation master Henry Selick.

Wine: a taste of expression

Wines are liquid landscapes. "People tend to think of landscape expressions in the context of painters," wine-maker Eric Glomski said. "Take somebody like Monet or Van Gogh, who paints a landscape and everybody can say clearly this person is expressing the landscape.

Faris lends wisdom in heated contest

TCU's Zvonko Buljan was heckled for a reason. Buljan's emotions flared up often in the Horned Frogs' 76-62 loss to the UNM men's basketball team Tuesday. At the 9:06 first-half mark, Buljan jousted underneath with UNM's Will Brown. Whatever Buljan said, he got a reaction out of Brown.

Editorial: President must speak plainly, drop charades

It is not the best of times; it is not the worst of times. It is a time for President David Schmidly to set aside aphorisms - especially those that invoke decapitated autocrats - and speak plainly to his employees. Yes, employees, not subjects or serfs.

Daily Lobo Spotlight

Daily Lobo: How long have you been biking? Stephen Webb: Probably for, like, the last two years. Seriously, like, the stuff that I'm doing, the stuff that I'm doing is called trials. DL: What does that mean? SW: It's kind of like an urban sport, an urban type of biking where the rider tries to use urban obstacles as his course, so there's a lot of technical stuff.

Daily Lobo not biased against Schmidly, just doing its job

Editor, Regarding student Jordan Sayre's letter entitled "Daily Lobo has been biased in coverage of Schmidly" on Feb. 23, it's journalism 101 to know that when a dog bites a man, it is not news, but when a man bites a dog, it is news. What David Schmidly does right is not news because that is what he is expected to do and is being paid to do.

Coach motivates swimmers by example

It's the end of a two-a-day practice. UNM swimmers take laps in the pool for two hours at 6:30 a.m., and they're finishing up afternoon practice with a run after lifting weights. Their tired bodies might prefer to slowly cruise the few miles, but one force is pushing them harder: Their 33-year-old coach is beating them.
